Reading with your child Listen to your child every day, even for a short time. • Before reading, talk about the cover, the title, the pictures, and dis-
cuss what the book may be about.
• During reading, discuss what has been read up to that point, and
imagine what will happen next time. (Predicting is a skill children
need to learn.)
• After reading is finished, talk and ask questions about the story and
the pictures.
• When reading a harder book together, take turns. Beginning read-
ers can read the repetitive parts and more experienced readers can
read a paragraph or a page.
• On finding an unknown word: Pause to give your child time
to work out the word. Prompt
go back to the beginning of the sentence, or read past
the difficult word to the end of the sentence.
look for a clue in the picture or the words
look at the first letter and think about what the words could be
ask “Does this make sense?”
try to sound out the word
if necessary tell your child the word
Talk about books, read together and make reading an enjoyable, shared
activity. It is important to read to your child in your home language if your first
language is not English. Experience shows that using your home language
will help your child to learn to read in English.

Reading with your child
at home will help your
child in all learning
areas of school.
Be confident that
your child will
learn to read.
A child's sense of self
What's happening the following week?
for who they are (no strings
or expectations attached!),"
says Dr. Rode.
… to teach. "Praise is a
wonderful teaching tool
when it is specific and de-
scriptive and genuine," says
Dr. Rode. "It is also most
impacting when praise is
related to the
child's efforts, not just the
successes. For example,
'You worked really hard to
finish that assignment on
time' can help kids develop
good work habits."
… to encourage:
"Encouragement is similar to
praise and supports a child's
personal sense of competence,"
explains Dr. Rode. "Encouraging
statements might show how the
child can handle challenges, 'All
that practice is really helping
you get better.'"
… to show appreciation. "We
can also make sure to use words
of appreciation frequently each
day," suggests Dr. Rode, "like
'thank you' and 'you are a big
help.'"

"Praise, encouragement and kind
words are an essential part of our
everyday communication with our
children across all ages," says Dr.
Cheryl Rode, director of clinical op-
erations at the San Diego Center for
Children. "Children develop their
sense of self through their commu-
nications with others, especially
their parents."
As parents, the things we say to our
children become part of who they
are. Use words…
... to express unconditional
love. "Words and gestures of simple
affection convey that we value and
appreciate our children

School Code of Conduct and Behaviour Bank System: We take discipline seriously at CityKidz Primary
School. We have a detailed School Code of Conduct and have put a system of merits and demerit
points in place in the form of the Behaviour Bank. All learners are to abide by the provisions laid out in
the Code of Conduct.
We will be introducing a Friday Detention class for children who constantly disobey our Code of Con-
duct. Learners will receive detention slips for poor work ethic or disruptive behaviour. 10 (Ten) Demerits
received will result in an hour and half Detention on Fridays after school. Learners have to realise that
their actions have consequences. An official detention letter will be sent home with the date and time
of the detention .When a detention slip is produced at home we would appreciate it if the matters on
the slip are dealt with by the parents. We appeal to you not to undermine this sanction. Detention
dates and times are final and learners are to attend the detention.
You are requested to take an active part in teaching your child discipline and it is the parents’ respon-
sibility to ensure compliance of our Code of Conduct. All learners were issued with the Learners Code
of Conduct. If you need to read through this with your child it is available on our website. Should you
require another copy, please contact the school. Thank you for your co-operation in this regard.
