KIDS’ CLUB 13 July - 31 August 2013 Tickets from just £1 www.picturehouses.co.uk/kids_club At your local Picturehouse every Saturday Saturday 10 August Kids’ Club pick of the season ERNEST & CELESTINE We love this charming French animation, based on Gabrielle Vincent’s beloved children’s books. Although it’s subtitled, little ones really don’t need words to follow this enchanting tale, and we highly recommend you try it! You could always buy the book or borrow it from the library to familiarise yourself with the story first, but here’s a rundown of the action… Bears live upstairs and mice live downstairs, and never the two shall meet – that’s just the way it is in the animal land where the film is set. But this delicate balance between the species is upset when Ernest, a large, solitary and rather grumpy bear, meets Célestine, a wide-eyed orphan mouse, who never even believed that big bears existed and is thrilled to discover that they do. Eventually, against all odds, Célestine wins Ernest over. He welcomes the lost mouse into his home, and the pair give each other company and support. But theirs is a friendship that flies in the face of the established order of things. Before long the mice and bear authorities, furious that upstairs bears and downstairs mice have mixed, are forced to work together to address the problem presented by our two heroes. We think you’ll love it! ´

TEST YOUR PARENTS!You see our film ratings all the time, but do you know exactly what they all mean? And what about certificates from a long time ago? Can you work out the meanings of the certificates your grandparents used to see?

Do our test with your parents or carers (or even teachers) to match up the certificates that The Croods are holding with the descriptions – and work out whether they are still used. Why not colour in The Croods too? See the bottom of the page for the answers.

1 This means 'universal'. A film with this rating is suitable for all.

2 Parents are warned that some of the material or issues in the film may be too strong for younger children. BBFC Examiners are thinking of children of around 8 when they recommend this rating.

3 This was first used in 1951 and had an age limit of 16 (which was later raised to 18)

4 This stood for 'horror' or 'horrific' and was initially advisory (so there was no legal age limit at first). It later became the X.

5 BBFC Examiners are thinking of children of 12 and over when they recommend this rating for cinema films. Parents might decide that their children can handle the themes or issues in this film but must go with under-12s to see it.

6 There could be some strong issues in a film with this rating. No one under 15 is allowed to go to the cinema to see a film with this rating.

7 Adults only. This film is not suitable for any children. You are not allowed

to see a film of this rating unless you are 18 or over.

8 This rating is only for video works – so films you watch on DVD or Blu-ray or as a download. No one under 12 can buy or rent films with this rating.

9 One of the oldest certificates, used as early as 1913. This meant a film was more suitable for adults (though no film was rated this if it wasn’t clean and wholesome). It was later known as Advisory.

10 This was first used in 1970 and was only for children of 14 and over.

BBFC ACTIVITY SPECIAL!Have you ever wondered who decides what certificate a film is given? The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) rates movies, giving films the ratings

including U, PG and 12A that you see on the posters and the black card at the

start of the film. These ratings tell you who the film is suitable for.Have a go at these activities to find out more about ratings and classification.

You can also visit our website for children www.cbbfc.co.uk, which re-launches

this summer. There you can read about new releases, ask BBFC Examiners questions

about their job, and watch trailers and give them your own age rating. Grown-ups can visit www.bbfc.co.uk for all they information the may need about age ratings. On this site they will find

guides for parents to the different age ratings, study aids for older students and detailed BBFCinsight about all films, telling

them what issues they contain and how they are treated, and letting them decide on what films to watch with their family.
