Before we start the lesson, think about this question:

You have been studying plants in science. Your teacher wants you to make a poster about planting a garden for Earth Day. How could you learn more about Earth Day and plant growth?

Your teacher does know a lot of information, but she may want you to do research about Earth Day on your own.

Many people start a search this way, but you will get a lot of information you can’t use. Why?

There are too many web pages. The information is difficult to read and understand. The website does not relate to your assignment.

Starting in the library is a good idea. You could find books about the environment, planting a garden, or Earth Day. But, you may not be able to find all of the information you want.

1. Go to Arizona State Library Residents

2. Click EBSCO Database Resources (at right)

3. Enter your Arizona zip code and click login

4. Find the Kids Search logo and click the link

How to create a Kids Search Account

Having a Kids Search account lets you save information and return to it later. Here’s how:

1. Click the sign in link at the top of the page.

2. Click create new account. Fill in the information.

3. Click submit to complete the form.

4. Write down your user name and password.

5. Click continue to start your search.Your turn: Go to the Kids Search window to follow the directions.

Using an encyclopedia to start a search

When a topic is new to you, an encyclopedia is a good place to find general information. Let’s use the Kids Search encyclopedia to start our search.

1. Click on the button that says Encyclopedia.

2. Type the words earth day in the look up box.

3. Click Go

To find specific information about Earth Day, we need to revise the search. Using “quotation marks” will tell Kids Search that the words should be searched together.

How to do a basic search

Now that you know how use the encyclopedia and topic search, let’s do a basic search to find more articles for your educational poster.

1. Click Redo Search at the top of the article window.

2. Click Clear

3. Type “Earth Day” AND education in the search box

4. Click Go
