“First Kid” Facts - Robert Todd LincolnOne of the first “First Kids” was

Robert Todd Lincoln, son of Mary and Abraham Lincoln. Born in 1842, Robert was the only Lincoln child to live into adulthood.

In the years after President Lincoln’s assassination, Robert accepted an appointment from President James Garfield to be the Secretary of War. He served from 1881 to 1885 under Presidents Garfield and Chester A. Arthur.

Robert witnessed the assassina-tions of three presidents—Lincoln, Garfield, and McKinley. This af-fected him so deeply that he later refused to attend any functions involving U.S. presidents because he felt his presence might bring bad luck to them.

Robert lived long enough to at-tend the dedication of the famous Lincoln Memorial in honor of his father in Washington, D.C. in 1922.
