2 Kids Eat Smart Foundation Annual Report 2012-2013
A Message from the Chair and Executive Director
You are truly making a difference to the health and well being of our school aged children, throughout Newfoundland and Labrador! School Year 2012-2013 was an exciting year at Kids Eat Smart Foundation! With our 228 Kids Eat Smart Clubs in Newfoundland and Labrador, our volunteers served over 21,000 meals every day in our schools and community centres. With the start-up of 12 new clubs this year, Kids Eat Smart has breakfast, lunch or snack programs in almost 80 percent of the public school system. From the southern tip of the Avalon Peninsula, to Labrador’s north, 2,459,545 meals are served to school aged children every year. Providing nutritious food to our school aged children is possible because of the core funding from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the generosity of our Corporate partners, donors, volunteers, individuals, and community groups. You have helped us provide nutritious food to school aged
children so they are well nourished to be ready to learn. This past March, Goss Gilroy Management Consultants completed an independent evaluation of the Kids Eat Smart program. Some of the key findings of the report included the following: The Kids Eat Smart program has had a positive impact on students’ awareness of healthy eating and healthy choices.
The Kids Eat Smart program makes a contribution to socialization by helping students start their school day in a
supportive setting with peers, volunteers and teachers.
The Kids Eat Smart program is seen as having improved school attendance.
This was great news for us, and for you, as it confirmed what we already know - the work we do is having a positive impact on school age children. We decided to conduct our own less formal survey - and asked children who participated in the program, to share with us “six impossible things you can do because you eat breakfast”. As you can imagine the responses were as varied and unique as the children. Here are a few of their responses: I can study for tests.
I can pay attention in class.
I can jump higher than a kangaroo.
Children truly appreciate their Kids Eat Smart Clubs. Thank You! Sincerely,
Paul McDonald Celina Stoyles Chair, Board of Directors Executive Director
I can fly to the moon.
I can be the best I can be.
I can count to 3 billion.

That children need nutritious food to be healthy in order to grow and learn
That the school system must be involved in meeting the needs of the whole child
That children require a community response - a partnership of family, school and community - for
their healthy development
That everyone has a contribution to make and the Foundation will honour all forms of contribution
That all children must have equal opportunity to participate in Kids Eat Smart Clubs
