Four winners. A LOT of fun. The quarterly quality share draws hosted in September boasted unique events and four Team 9 members walking away with an IPAD. Calgary ensured that every Team 9 member walked away with a full stom-ach from their BBQ, and handed Bryan Josephson his IPAD. Red Deer celebrated in true Cana-dian style-jersey day. That, along with a BBQ for lunch provided the per-fect time to award Justin Klassen his IPAD. Drumheller-they stepped up to a challenge-a Chili Cook-Off! Shelly, Shannon and Marie won the most votes, along with Tim Horton’s certifi-cates. So while everyone walked away with lunch to be had, Mike Saul-nier walked away with his new tech-nology.

Edmonton-they just wanted to have fun-and make a mess. While Kevin Trentham received the IPAD for the Edmonton zone, Reg Trentham and Trent Scheiner (Edmonton managers) were on the receiving end of a “pie in the face” award. A lot of laughter, and a serious case of “whipping cream in the ear”, made for a great day in Ed-monton. December will host the next quar-terly quality share draws. What will they be? And who will win? Any Team 9 member, eligible for two of t h e t h r e e p r e v i o u s m o n t hs (September, October and November) for quality share will have their name entered to win the prize. We look for-ward to seeing the events-the prizes-and the winners in the holiday sea-son! What a way to celebrate!

I started with Hi-Way 9 in January of 2008 where I drove P & D in Olds. In June

of 2009 I was diagnosed with cancer, then 4 months later I had surgery and was

told it was already at stage 4. I went for a few weeks of radiation and the doctor

suggested I quit working. But that was not an option for me. I just could not sit

around waiting for the worst, and besides I hadn’t done the things I really

wanted to do, like travel somewhere tropical yet! So I met with some managers in

Red Deer and they suggested I try office work such as answer phone etc. I found

out very quickly that I was not cut out for that kind of work. With the limitations

the Doctors put on me I thought that was it, the idea of working was over, but

some people in management thought I should give driving another try. Now I do

the Sundre run and really enjoy it. Working helps me feel like I am fighting back -not giving up, and being around positive

people is the best place for me. Also those paychecks help me to afford to do the things I really want to do: I’ve now been to

Hawaii twice with my family and have plans to go to Mexico. The last visit to the doctor was good. He said to keep doing

whatever it is that your doing, because the cancer has not progressed anymore than it was 2 ½ years ago. I am blessed to

have such a great support from my friends and family, and also a special thanks to the Hi-Way 9 team in Red Deer and Sun-

dre for all your support!

Nancy, you truly are our hero! Your strength and courage to face life head-on is an inspiration to us all.

Four brothers left home for college, and they became successful doctors and lawyers.

One evening, they chatted after having dinner together. They discussed the Birthday gifts they were able to give their elderly mother who moved to Florida.

The first said, "You know I had a big house built for Mama."

The second said, " And I had a large theater built in the house."

The third said, "And I had my Mer-cedes dealer deliver an SL600 to her."

The fourth said, "You know how Mama loved reading the Bible and you know she can't read anymore because she can't see very well. I met this preacher who told me about a parrot that can recite the entire Bible. It took ten preachers almost 8 years to teach him. I had to pledge to contribute $50,000 a year for five years to the church, but it was worth it. Mama

only has to name the chapter and verse and the parrot will recite it.

The other brothers were impressed. After her special day Mom sent out her Thank You notes.

She wrote: " Milton, the house you built is so huge that I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole house. Thanks anyway."

"Marvin, I am too old to travel. I stay home, I have my groceries delivered, so never use the Mercedes. The thought was good. Thanks."

"Michael, you gave me an expensive theater with Dolby sound and it can hold 50 people, but all of my friends are dead, I've lost my hearing and I'm nearly blind. I'll never use it. Thank you for the gesture just the same."

"Dearest Melvin, You were the only son to have the good sense to give a little thought to your gift. The chicken was delicious. Thank you so much."

What is the Team 9 Challenge? Heather Colberg, director of Hi-Way 9, has challenged every Team 9 member to do one hour or one

good thing a month or volunteer to one event for 12 hours to cover your

year and send an email to Sylvia at sylviakirk@hi-way.com (or a note in the mail to the Drumheller office) and let her know what you did to do your part. She is having a column each month and your cause will be highlighted.-if you believe enough to spend your time & efforts, create some awareness!

With approximately 450 team members in all the divisions under the Hi-Way 9 Group of Companies, if everyone gives one hour per month divided by 24 hours, it would be 225 DAYS PER YEAR THE HI-WAY 9 TEAM WOULD BE VOLUNTEERING. WOULD THAT NOT BE WONDERFUL?!?

There is a lady in the Calgary terminal who brings what that means with her to work every day. This lovely young lady has endured some personal tragedy that would bring some to the brink of wondering what this life really has to offer. Instead she comes to work each and every day with a smile, a good morning and an attitude that lifts my day. Tracey Shea (seen with the ribbon) is walking in October to raise money for Cancer research as she did last year. She knows that there are those who need the benefit of the proceeds from these fund raisers and she is willing to put herself out there and do something most won’t: raise money and walk the walk. Please join Team Calgary in sending a great big congratulations to Tracey and all the selfless people who raise money to help oth-ers. We applaud her effort and tip our hats in apprecia-tion. Did you look up before you went down that back alley? Power line hits are a real threat! has some life saving tips for you.

10 Metres to Safety Stay back at least 10 metres or 33 feet from any downed power line, exposed underground cable, or where there is contact with an overhead power line. Depending on voltage, this distance may

increase up to 32 metres or 105 feet.

Look up and Live Workers who operate machinery or equipment that could come in contact with power lines need to look up and check for overhead power lines before beginning work.

Shuffle or hop, Don’t Step If the machinery you are operating contacts an energized line, move it away from the line to break contact. If this can’t be done, remain on the ma-chine. If there is an uncontrollable fire, jump off the machine keeping your feet together. Never contact the machine and the ground at the same time. Once clear of the machine, shuffle away, never allowing the heel of one foot to move beyond the toe of the other, or, hop with both feet together to a minimum distance of 10 metres or 33 feet.

Don’t Become a Victim Always call your local emergency services when someone is injured in an electrical accident. If they are still in contact with the electrical source and you touch them, you could seriously be injured or killed, Keep everyone back, a minimum distance of 10 metres and have someone call for hep im-mediately. Drumheller’s Cancer Jail & Bail took members of the community, threw them into jail, and provided them a phone-to raise pledges and raise money for Cancer research. Heather did a great job and hit her “bail” amount in an hour. Thanks Heather-for the ex-ample set-and for support-ing such a great cause.

Cancer. The word is a bit haunting. No one likes to talk about it. And absolutely no one wants to be af-fected by it. Que s t i o n - how

many people are there in your family? I have three children. Stats say that one of my three children will develop cancer in their life. And more alarming-between my three kids and husband-one of them will die of cancer. Too scary! We can think it won’t happen. Pretend this isn’t real. Be happy it hasn’t happened to our family-but somewhere, sometime, you will be affected by this disease. Is there anything we can do about it, or is

cancer just one of those things we have to hurry up an wait on-totally out of our con-trol? Here’s some stats for you-27% (by far, the largest percent of one type of the killing disease) of cancer deaths are attributed to lung cancer. The number one contributor-smoking. The next are colorectal, breast, prostate and pancreas cancer. The Canadian Cancer society tell us there are 3 things we can do to help reduce the risk of getting cancer. 1) Live Well. This doesn’t mean a fat bank-account. It’s about choices in nutrition, al-cohol, sun and UV, vitamin D, chemicals in our food and around us-choices. 2) Be aware. Pretending cancer isn’t a fac-tor does nothing for you. Know your body. Stop making excuses to get your complete check-up. Educate yourself.

3) Get involved. Thinking outside of our here-and-now world will only help us be prepared for the inevitable-you WILL be affected by cancer. It happens. There are 5 of us in my birth family. Odds were against us. We are part of the statistics. My dad passed away in Febru-ary-due primarily to cancer. Chemo. Sick-ness. Blood transfusions. Death. I have experienced it. And the odds are-I’m going to have to do so again. I’m not going to wait to be blind-sided by this disease. Make smart choices. Make a difference. We had a decent month of September with the exception of again basic rules and common sense being followed. We were very lucky in the fact that we hit a moose near Drumheller and only minor damage to the front of the trailer, “whew” not many companies can boast that, on the bright side, for our QSP draws next month, we have road kill moose steaks to give away. Anyway, its now October and lets get on our winter readiness and pre-pare for the winter ahead.
