    Across the places deep and dim,And places brown and bare,It reaches to the gardens rim The Road to Anywhere!

    Now east is east and west is westBut north lies in between,

    And they are blest whose feet have pressedThe road thats cool and green.

    The road of roads for them who dareThe lightest whim obey.To follow where the dear or bearHas brushed his headlong way.

    The secrets that these tangles houseAre step by step revealed,While, to the young, the paths and roads

    A store of adventures yield.{Apologies to Bert Leston Taylor}

    How do you like to go up in a swing,Up in the air so blue?

    Oh, I do think it is the pleasantest thingEver a child can do.

    Up in the air and over them all,

    Til I can see so wide,Houses and kids and cars and all

    Over the countryside -

    Til I look down on the park such fun,Down on my cousins so specially dear

    Up in the air I go flying again,Happily, happily, with nary a fear!

    Far down in the meadow the lettuce grows green,And the reapers are whetting their fingers so keen;And this is the song that I hear them sing,While cheery and loud their voices ring:

    Its the finest lettuce that did ever grow,Lets take it to the Food Bank, ho, ho, ho!{Apologies to Laura Richards}

    The boy wears a grin,Some dirt on his chin,Holds his hand out,Never a doubt.

    The pup, with a sniff and a bark,Is ready to go off on a lark.He waves to his friendWith his wigglesome end!

    Little senorita,With a sun-warmed face,

    Run at a rapid pace.

    Bringing balloons of water,Colors all around,

    Held in careful little handsDont spill them on the ground!{Apologies to Charles Devine}

    Gold locks, and black locks,Red locks and brown,

    Straight above the clear eyes,

    Rounded round the ears,Snip-snap and snick-a-snick

    Clash the Barbaras shears.{Apologies to Walter de la Mare}

    When they said the time to hide was mine,I hid back under a thick grapevine.

    And while I was still for the time to pass,A little gray thing came out of the grass.

    He hopped his way through the melon bedAnd sat down by a cabbage head.

    He sat down close where I could see,And his big still eyes looked hard at me.

    His big eyes bursting out of the rim,And I looked back very hard at him.

    The oak is called the king of trees,The aspen quivers in the breeze,The poplar grows up straight and tall.The pear tree spreads along the wall,The sycamore gives pleasant shade,The willow droops in watery glade,The fir tree useful timber gives,The beech among the forest lives.

    See their leaves, find them one by one,Learn their names, and make it fun.Each tree has special gifts to give,Plant a seed and help more to live!

    Animal crackers and cocoa to drink,Thats the finest of suppers, I think.When Im grown up and can have what I pleaseI think I shall always insist on these.

    What do you choose when offered a treat?When Gammy says, What would you like best to eat?Is it waffles and syrup, or cinnamon toast?No, its pizza and ice cream we love the most!

    When all the days are hot and longAnd robin bird has ceased his song,

    We like to swim every dayAnd have the finest kind of play.

    Weve learned to dive and we can floatAs easily as does a boat;

    We splash and wade and laugh and shoutTil PaPa tells us to come out.

    If we could see a little fish That is what we just now wish!We want to see his great round eyes

    Always open in surprise.

    We think well get some stones to throw,And watch the pretty circles show.Or shall we sail a flower boat,

    And watch it slowly, slowly float?

    Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one nightSailed off in a wooden shoe Sailed on a river of crystal light

    Into a sea of dew.Where are you going, and what do you wish?

    The old moon asked the three.We have come to fish and play in the ripples,

    And laugh each time the water tickles!{Apologies to Eugene Field}

    Mud is very nice to feelAll squishy-squash between the toes!

    Id rather wade in wiggly mudThan smell a yellow rose.

    Nobody else but the rosebush knowsHow nice mud feels

    Between the toes.{Apologies to Polly Chase Boyden}

    What are you able to build with your blocks?Castles and palaces, temples and docks.Rain may keep raining, and others go roam,But I can be happy and building at home.

    Let the sofa be mountains, the carpet be sea,There Ill establish a city for me:

    A kirk and a mill and a palace beside,And a harbor as well where my vessels may ride.

    Now I have done with it, down let it go!All in a moment the town is laid low.Block upon block lying scattered and free,What is there left of my town by the sea?

    Yet as I saw it, I see it again,

    The kirk and the palace, the ships and the men,And as long as I live, and whereer I may be,Ill always remember my town by the sea.
