HOW????
The bride is kept in a room until the groom’s family manage to persuade her to marry the groom
Take the bride to the groom’s house
The man (groom) abduct a woman (the bride)
If the bride reject the marriage, it is considered unacceptable for her and she will be perceived as
rejecting Kyrgyz cultural identity
Once she agrees, she will put on a white wedding scarf/jooluk as a sign of acceptance
If the bride refuses, her family and the groom’s family will pressurize her until she accept the marriage
WHY IT HAPPENS???

BRIDE-NAPPING
There Goes The Bride….
Couple got legally married at city hall in the morning, got to church
in the evening, then goes to the wedding party.
Bride is snatched during the wedding
party by the ‘kidnapper’. Usually
after midnight.
Bride is held hostage at Club, bowling center or
most frequently- Bucharest’s Arc of
Triumph.
‘Kidnapper’ negotiate for ransom from the godfather
(Before midnight) or the groom (After midnight). Presents bride’s shoe as
proof.
The godfather or the groom give the ransoms to the
‘kidnappers’
The bride is returned to the groom. The shoe is returned to
the bride.
Why?1) Part of their culture.2) To show women as important possessions for men and their family.3) To test the groom’s love for the bride.4) Usually are arranged beforehand to avoid awkwardness of being kidnap
twice or more.5) As story to retell their future descendants.
Bucharest’s Arc of Triumph?
A top football player rented Bucharest's Arch of Triumph and proposed there to his girlfriend.
No kidnapping was involved but the scene stuck in the popular imagination as a symbol of marriage – and soon the monument became a sort of midnight mecca for bride-napping.
WHY WE CHOOSE THIS CULTURE?
