The media tells us that the membership of the mainline Christian denominations in
America are in decline. And the stats seem to back that up. But, we also know that
God is still in the business of doing great things and that many churches are very
successful in ministry both in numbers and impact. As a denominational church, we
want to be a ministry that is making disciples of Jesus Christ and building the
kingdom of God rather than one that is simply maintaining its programs and slowly
succumbing to the trends of complacency and decline.
Church consultants are people who make it their profession to help energize
congregations and offer counsel and advice to promote vital ministry in local
churches. One consultant, Don Nations, based in Florida, has consulted with
hundreds of churches and discovered that there are two main challenges that
mainline denominational churches must address if they are to avoid decline.
The first challenge is to move from the more common internal focus to a more
missional external focus. Nations writes, “Growing churches are primarily focused
on reaching outside of themselves – local and international missions, intentional
invitation, servant evangelism, making a positive difference in the community,
investing in advertising, delivering great hospitality, etc. “ With this in mind, Kidder
is striving to move from “maintenance” to “mission.” To be a church that cares
about the people outside our walls and to be so effective at outreach that the
community knows that we care about them.
The second greatest challenge is to embrace the future rather than live in the past. “It
is fine to honor the history of the congregation,” Nation says, but “refusing to change
and valuing the memories of the past more than making new memories of people
encountering Jesus…will lead to the eventual decline of the congregation. There
should be more concern expressed in a congregation if there are few young people
than if there is a suggestion to remodel the sanctuary…” We at Kidder certainly
value our legacy, but I believe that embracing the future is the best way to honor that
legacy.
As we move forward with changes that emphasize outreach and missions, we can
overcome these challenges. It is only natural to be self-centered, but God calls us to
a different way. Matthew 22: 37-39 says, “You must love the Lord your God…and
love your neighbor as yourself.” Let us move forward to together loving God and
loving others.

UMCOR – United Methodist Committee on Relief- is a non-profit 501c3
organization designed to provide humanitarian relief for domestic and international disaster situations,
and works with other relief organizations and local people to provide the supplies that are needed, such
as water, food, health supplies, blankets and so on. The annual “ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING”
offering is used to pay the administrative costs so that all other donations go 100% toward providing
relief supplies.
UMVIM- United Methodist Volunteers in Mission – is a sister organization that provides the “Boots on
the ground” workers who become the hands and feet of Jesus, gathering, organizing, and distributing
the supplies and working in disaster areas to provide help and hope to people who are hurting.
Volunteers in Mission provide the “face” of the United Methodist Church, providing a long term, caring
Christian presence in the aftermath of disaster.
If you research the UMCOR.org website you will find much information. Here, I want to highlight how we
can, as a church, be a part of UMCOR and UMVIM in addition to our other Missions emphasis at Kidder.
There are seven different kits that UMCOR collects and distributes - bedding kits, birthing kits, cleaning
buckets, health kits, layette kits, sewing kits, and school kits. I would like to focus on the Health kits,
which we could send to Annual Conference, in addition to building these kits throughout the year to send
to UMCOR.
A health kit includes a hand towel, washcloth, bath sized bar of soap, finger nail clippers,
8” comb, toothbrush, 6 adhesive band aids, and one dollar to purchase toothpaste. All
of this can fit in a one gallon zip lock bag.
This is one way in which you can participate in “Hands On” Missions and Outreach
without having to leave your family or employment and travel to a disaster area. Anyone and everyone
can do this, so that all of us can say we are involved in UMCOR.
If God is placing on your heart a desire to help those surviving a disaster, then
let’s see what we can do with health kits. I think assembling 100 kits is
achievable during the year. I put together two, so we have 98 to go.
Charlie Hodges and I team taught a class in Williamsville, NY on May 10 for new UMVIM Early Response
Disaster Relief trainees. We had 22 adult students from Rochester, Niagara Falls, Sodus, Williamsville,
Kenmore, Falconer, Cohocton, and other towns near Buffalo. The class teaches how to help survivors of
natural disasters recover from floods, hurricanes and tornados. These successful students will receive
photo ID badges from UMCOR as evidence of proper training.
