MATCH PREVIEW

With only eight games left in the season the time is now for Sydney Olympic to turn their campaign around, starting on Sunday when they host bottom team Hakoah Sydney City East at Belmore Sports Ground.

Olympic snatched a 1-1 draw against Blacktown City and were unlucky to get the win during an thrilling end to end encounter.

However, that has been the story of the reigning premier’s season with flashes of excellence undone by moments of madness.

Coach Abbas Saad is surely desperate for answers as he searches for a way to return his team to the heights of last season.

Saad has made a number of small changes to his team in recent weeks including moving Will Angel to a central defensive position while moving incumbent centre back Tom Whiteside out to right back.

These changes have failed to help Olympic find major improvement but don’t expect the squad tinkering to end until results start going the Blues way.

One constant has been striker Alex Sanchez who remains a constant threat at the point of the attack.

Their opponent this week is Hakoah Sydney City East who remain anchored to 12th position on the table and are facing relegation.

It has been a horror season for the Gavin Rae coached side who have hit rock bottom in 2019.

Nothing the Eastern Suburbs side do seems to work compounded by the fact their attack has failed to fire scoring a league worst tally of only nine goals from 14 matches this season.

Hakoah historically has frustrated opposition sides with dogged defence and pragmatic football but it’s been a gameplay which hasn’t quite hit the mark this year.

Olympic will be heavy favourites for this game but with the threat of Relegation looming maybe Hakoah will find a new lease of life to save themselves from the drop.

1ST GRADE REVIEWS

Hakoah Sydney City East 0 – Rockdale City Suns 4 at Hensley Athletic Field

Rockdale City Suns re-entered the NPL NSW top five and heaped more misery on rock-bottom Hakoah Sydney City East with a 4-0 win at Eastgardens on Sunday.

Nick Porreca’s side had dropped out of the finals positions following their five-goal collapse against Marconi Stallions a week ago but returned at the expense of Manly United after strolling past the luckless Hakoah at Hensley Athletic Field.

Jordan Figon and Leigh Egger fired in scrappy first-half goals before Suns striker Figon sealed his double and put the visitors in the clear five minutes after the interval.

Alec Urosevski added a fourth late on, consigning Hakoah – who lost ex-A-League star Predrag Bojic and his replacement James Combes to injury inside the space of 34 first half minutes – to their eleventh defeat of the campaign.

It leaves Gavin Rae’s side seven points adrift of eleventh-placed Mt. Druitt Town Rangers at the foot of the ladder.

Blacktown City 1 – Sydney Olympic 1 at Lily Homes Stadium

Blacktown City and Sydney Olympic have shared the spoils after an exhilarating 1-1 draw at Lily Homes Stadium on Sunday.

It was a thrilling end to end encounter with Olympic unlucky not to snatch an unlikely victory in a frantic final minutes.

Joey Gibbs fired home for Blacktown midway through the second half, but it was quickly cancelled out when Olympic equalised only two minutes later through Radovan Pavicevic.

Both sides traded chances in crazy closing ten minutes but neither could find the breakthrough as they took only a point away from an enthralling contest.

U20’S MATCH PREVIEW

A 1-1 draw with Blacktown City in Round 14 kept Sydney Olympic in sixth place ahead of this week’s match against Hakoah Sydney City East.

Having won just once in their last seven games, Olympic will know the importance of taking maximum points from a fixture against eleventh-placed Hakoah.

Still, the visitors won’t be rolling over: Hakoah are now four points clear of last-placed Sydney United

following an impressive 3-2 win over Rockdale City Suns last weekend, with goals coming from Zachary Sapsford and Hesan Soufi giving them just their third win of the season.

Hakaoh sit eight points off the top five, and remain an unpredictable opponent as they look to close the gap on the teams above them.
