KIA ORA VOGELTOWN WHANAU What an awesome morning we had this morning at the bi-annual ‘Dads and Lads’ breakfast! A huge thanks to all the ‘Dads’ (grandparents, cousins, older brothers, stepdads) who came along and joined us for breakfast!. We had a great sports exchange against West End School yesterday - although the weather turned nasty just as we were about to begin the games, the kids did not complain and in true Vogeltowner fashion, got stuck in! Tu Meke whanau! The results were: Rugby loss 15 - 33. Player of the day for Vogeltown was Corbin Shotter Netball B loss 2 - 13. Player of the day was Heather Smale Netball A loss 3 - 13. Player of the day was Alesha Broad Football won 3-1. Player of the day was Malakai Benny. Although the results did not go our way, the games were played with great sportsmanship and tenacity. A huge thanks to our coaches, refs and parents who were able to come and watch and support our teams. Our next exchange is next Friday (1st June) against Central School here at Vogeltown. This is a big one against our ‘Carrington Street’ city cousins as we play for the ‘Carrington Cup’. This should be a great derby! We are still after some feedback from our kids, so if you have time please can you complete this survey. We have set up a ‘google form’ and ‘survey monkey’ for the kids to fill out with parents/caregivers - 1 per family. If you have a spare 10 minutes, we would appreciate you sitting down with your child and filling out the survey. There are 24 questions and have the same scoring system all the way through. If you would like a paper copy, please request this form the office. TE REO AT VOGELTOWN This is the last week that we are focusing on ‘He aha tenei’? which means, ‘What is this?’ To reply to the question we use ‘He _______ tena’, That is a ____________’. We are using classroom objects to help with the learning of this saying. Some of these objects are:

Pepa - paper, pene - pen, pene rakau- pencil, pene hinu - crayon, rapa - rubber, ruri - ruler, rapihi - rubbish, kutikuti - scissors, pukapuka - book, karaka - clock, tepu - table, turu - chair, whariki - mat, matapihi - window

You will have noticed the great carvings we have at Vogeltown school, but do you know that they mean?

Today we are going to look at the carving above the doorway in to the hall (see photo above). This carving is called ‘Urukinaki’ and is the daughter of Kahutaiaroa (the chief on the left side of our entranceway). Urukinaki has her hands outstretched to welcome you and to capture our knowledge - Haere Whakamua, to Go Forward.

HOME AND SCHOOL UPDATE A big thanks to the Home and School ladies who helped with the lunches last week, the inter school sports day food preparation and the organization of the ‘Dads and Lads’. Without this help, we can not function!

CLASS REPS - YOUNG LEADERS On Monday all the Class Reps went down to Palmerston North to National Young Leaders day. There were lots of kids and there were famous people that came to inspire us about leadership.

The speakers were - Riley Hathaway, Lisa Tamati, Jono Naylor, Kelly Wilson, James Beck, Te Waka McLeod and Vince Harder. There was also a special guest William Wailua who came but my favorites were Riley Hathaway and Lisa Tamati. Riley found her calling when she was 12 and Lisa has never given up! By Mena Raven

Palmerston North was great. On Monday we woke up early and went to school. We took a long drive to Palmerston North to go to the Young Leaders Conference. There were around 2,500 kids there. My favorite person speaking at the conference was Vince Harder. He talked about his music career and all his partnerships with other musicians.

We also saw live in the conference William Wailua and he sung his song ‘Wowee’, it was amazing. When we driving home we stopped at a skatepark and had a run around. It was an exciting, eventful day. By Haylee White

KIDS CORNER - WICKED WRITING Focus: Using our senses and ‘show, not tell’

We were all standing one by one cautiously moving closer to our doom. I heard my friend swear as loud as a road raging Aucklander when he tumbled out of the tiny jet! I thought, if he did it I have to too, I’m not a chicken. Things were going through my head as fast as a bullet train. Next thing I knew I was staring out of the jet. This is it. I was looking out on the landscape of the tiny city below. Is that my house? This is some serious flub dub! I belly flopped out of the jet; instant regret - I hand plant my face. All around me was endless sky and clouds. I’m going fast like a shark and zipping through the air so speedy the wind is slapping my face and yelling in my ears. I closed my eyes when I felt wet water cover me. I hastily open them. ‘Oh my god’ I’m in a cloud! I pull the shoot and get blasted up in to the sky. Seconds later I collapse on the grassy floor.
