January-

Greetings from the frozen tundra of the North Pole!

Okay, so greetings from Allen, Texas...had you going there for a moment, didn’t I? I hope everyone had safe and happy holidays, shared with your family and friends.

We are beginning the first of three Mid‐Year Conferences, the first in the Heart‐land in Midwest City, Oklahoma, then to Arlington for Metroplex, and finally to San Antonio for South Texas in March. Exciting times with fellowship, education and fun! Watch for registration information from the District Office for any of the events and we look forward to seeing everyone at one of them.

Good news from the membership front – as of December 31st, we were up by 106 members! Great work and thanks to everyone for their hard work. Let’s continue and see if we can double that by the South Texas Mid‐Year in San Antonio. We can do it!

Hope you’re making plans for the ‘party’ called the International Convention this summer in Indianapolis. I will be providing information at each of the Mid‐Year events and registration will be opening online the end of January, on the Interna‐tional website. Make your reservations early to get the best rates!

And T‐O is STILL the world leader for model clubs for Eliminate...way to go, T‐O! Everything is bigger and better here! So keep up the wonderful things you are do‐ing and don’t forget to share pictures, articles and experiences for the newsletters. See you at a Mid‐Year, coming to you soon!

HolidayService

Clubs all over our District stepped up over the holidays to serve their communities. Below is just one of the great stories we received. Please go to our website at www.txokkiwanis.org to see them all, and many thanks to everyone who shared their stories with us. We must let our communities know that Kiwanis is a best kept secret. Tell us about your club’s activities…and be proud and loud about your dedication to your community!

Susan HennumChair, T/O Growth Team

On Thursday, December 11, 2014, at the San Mar-cos BBQ, over forty Kiwanians gathered includ‐ing members from Luling and Seguin clubs. We had a wonderful old‐fashioned Christmas sing along and everybody was in such a festive spirit. We had a surprise for member McBride Wilson ‐‐

we presented him with a plaque for his many years of supervision and for maintaining our children’s camp, Camp Kiwah.

In 1944, our club purchased a seven‐acre lot on the Blanco river to provide a camping spot for Boy and Girl Scouts. Under the faithful supervision of McBride Wilson, our club main‐tains the camp, keeping it mowed and clean. Many youth organizations have used Camp Kiwah and it has been very appreciated. So, member Lon Shell had a beautiful plaque made recognizing McBride’s many years of selfless service, and as an additional tribute to him the camp has been renamed The McBride Wilson Kiwanis Youth Camp. A new sign will be made and posted, recognizing the new name.

Heartland KiwaniansCelebrate 100 Years of Service

Record crowd gathered at the Mid-Winter Conference in Midwest City

On January 17, Kiwanians from across Texas and Oklahoma met at the Mid‐Del Technology Center in Midwest City, Oklahoma for the Mid‐Winter Conference, the first of three such events to be held in 2015.

Throughout most of the twentieth century and into the twenty‐first to come, Kiwanis has been there, helping fulfill the needs of children the world over. The devoted efforts of its thou‐sands of members, who gather tirelessly in almost every nation of the globe, have brought hope and better lives to youth everywhere and, through them, the tools for a better world.

Kim Maxey, President of the Kiwanis Club of Kingwood is proud to announce the club’s nomination of John Sheridan as a candidate for Texas-Oklahoma Kiwanis District Governor‐elect for 2015‐2016.

John is focused on growing Kiwanis, both in membership and service. He looks to the future as well as recognizes the past. He realizes we have to know where we have been to plot a path to the future. John often expresses “Kiwanis is about three things: service, fellowship and education. We are a ser‐vice organization and that is our core; the friends and relationships that are developed as we meet and work on projects is priceless; learning about the world around us through programs at meet‐ings to KI training allows us to grow and expand.”

Concerning the Governor‐elect position, John noted, “If elected, it is my intention to focus on the core of what we do best, improve the world one child and one community at a time.”

John was born and raised in Monmouth, Ill. He attended Austin College in Sherman, Texas and graduated in 1971. The year 1974 proved a busy one for him as he married his wife of forty years, Susan, and earned his MBA from Texas A&M at Commerce. John and Susan have three children and four grandchildren. They have resided in Kingwood, Texas for over thirty years and they are active members of the Atascocita Presbyterian Church.

John’ career with Exxon started in Kingsville, Texas. Early in his tenure he joined the Kingsville Kiwanis Club where he served as a Director on the board. His career led him many places including Corpus Christi, New Orleans and Houston. John retired from Exxon in 2001 and started a second career with Insperity, retiring in 2013.

John became a member of the Kingwood Kiwanis Club while employed at Insperity. He has served as Distinguished President, Secretary, Treasurer, Board Member and numerous Committee Chair posi‐tions. John was elected and served as Division 3’s Lieutenant Governor in 2009‐2010. It was during this period he became more aware of the relationships between the Membership, Clubs and District. Since then, he has served in many District capacities including: PLGA Board Member, CLE Instruc‐tor, ELIMINATE Speakers Bureau, TO District International Liaison Chair, Long Range Planning Committee member and The Formula ‐ Certified Club Counselor. During John’s term as LTG two new clubs were opened in Division 3 and he was recognized as Distinguished LTG. John has also conducted numerous workshops for Kiwanis at District and International Conventions.

John is a Servant Leader whose experience goes beyond Kiwanis. Other leadership positions include Chairman of the Lake Houston YMCA board, Chairman of the Lake Houston American Heart Asso‐ciation board, and Insperity Invitational Pro Am Chairman. Awards include Lake Houston YMCA Volunteer of the Year, American Heart Association ‐ Barbara Newman Award and Insperity Invita‐tional Volunteer of the Tournament.

At times, the task has seemed daunting. Can we reach our goal? Since Kiwanis International joined UNICEF in the fight to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus, infant mortality rates have dropped significantly. To‐day, fewer babies are dying from this terrible disease. While our progress is worthy of celebration, there’s still much work to be done.

Together, we can make history. We can eliminate this disease from ev‐ery city, town and village on earth. For just US$1.80, you can vaccinate a woman and protect her future children. With your gift to The Eliminate Project, you can save babies every single day for a year—or even two.

Progress to date:

Between 2010 and 2013, Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus deaths decreased by more than 15 percent. Approximately 9,000 fewer babies die each year from MNT—that’s 25 fewer each day! MNT has been eliminated from 35 countries since 2000.

Your T/O Growth Team has been busy working on two exciting new programs for our District this year!

The first is aimed at capturing our graduating SLP members. Kiwanis Interna-tional put into place last April a new membership level of ‘Associate Member,’ which is an automatic membership into a pool of graduated CKI and Key Club students. There is no fee to be involved in this alumni group. The KI board also voted last year to reduce to $20 the new member fee for associate mem‐bers transferring into Kiwanis clubs, which covers the fee for magazine and insurance. Your Texas Oklahoma District Board voted in October to waive the District new member fee for associate members. When asked about this deci‐sion, growth Chair Susan Hennum stated, ”These students are our future. It is imperative that we welcome them into our clubs.” This is nothing new to Past Governor Hennum, who is so serious about recruiting graduating SLP members that in February of 2013 she asked the Past Lt. Governor’s Association to manage a fund made up of donations from our members to help scholar‐ship membership fees and dues for these graduating students. Scholarships are usually one half of the cost to join, so your graduates can join your club for only $10!

The second program is for individuals who are transferring in their job, or whose Kiwanis club has folded. Members wishing to stay involved in Kiwanis are encouraged to transfer to an at‐large membership with the T/O District, which is being handled as a club satellite to our Young Professional E-Club.

Members of this group will be informed of all District events and conventions until such time as they get settled into their new area and are ready to join a local club. Dues for the At‐Large satellite are payable at $100 per year and due no later than September 15. Members can stay in the satellite for up to two years. If there is no club in your area, information will be sent over to the For-mula Team who can assist in forming a new club. One may also simply join the E-Club on a permanent basis.

For any information on these two new programs, please contact T/O Growth Chair Susan Hennum at [email protected]

The Women in Kiwanis Fund, established in the 2011‐2012 administrative year, celebrates the 25th anniversary of women’s contributions to Kiwanis

and raises funds to help our SLP youth (young men and women) attend leadership conferences. To increase the number of donations to this endowment, T‐O Governor Colleen Biggerstaff has chosen it as her project for this year and requests that all donations in her honor be given to help grow the Fund.

Each club is challenged to make a gift of $250 to the T-O Foundation, designating it for the Women in Kiwanis Fund, to grow this fund during this Kiwanis year.

An attractive banner patch will be given to each club who makes a donation.

For those clubs who send in their gifts prior to the Governor’s visit to their area, she can pres‐ent their banner patches at each Zone Confer‐ence. Even more important is the fact that it will help our future SLP leaders who need financial help to attend leadership conferences.

Club officers, I challenge you to make this a record year for contributing to this fund. The faster it grows, the more we can help our youth to receive the leadership training they need to become future leaders in Kiwanis!

All Governor Gifts received this year will be donated to the Women in Kiwan-is Fund hosted by the Texas Oklahoma District Foundation. This fund, started by Past Governor Susan Hennum, was set up to provide scholarships to lead‐ership events for our SLP students, such as Key Leader and District Conven‐tions.

On Friday, January 16, our club provided volunteers for our adopted school, Reagan Elementary, to hold Winterfest - Winter Fun and Games in the school gym. Winterfest was held for students who had earned the PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Sup‐port) reward. Those students met behav‐ior expectations and exhibited excellent citizenship to earn the reward. Differ‐ent booths and stations were set up for the children to participate in, including snowball relay challenge, penguin races, hot cocoa booth, etc. The children and volunteers all had a great time as we got to celebrate the success of these students and share a time of fun and games with them.

Vivian Marschik, Secretary for the Kiwanis Club of Harker Heights report‐ed that they have been very busy this year. Their projects have included SLP students in the Eastern Hills Middle School Builders Club and the Harker Heights High School Key Club. We began the year with Adopt‐a‐Spot in the Harker Heights Community Park, and have made a 1‐year com‐mitment to clean the playground and pavilion area. Members of the EHMS & HHHS Key Clubs, Faculty Advisers Lisa Burden & Alice Page, Kiwanis Advisor Vivian Marschik and Kiwanis members Norm Dunbar and Paul Loughran met there after school, and grilled hot dogs for the hungry kids when the project was done. Paul Loughran welcomed the students to the Kiwanis family.

A joint event at the Stewart C. Meyer Public Library was held on Hallow‐een. Our students oversaw an obstacle course for the little ones, danced with kids at a party held after the outdoor activities had finished, and passed out refreshments.

The EHMS Builders Club worked the annual Food for Families event at the Killeen distribution point. They, along with Ft Hood soldiers, community members, faculty adviser Lisa Burden and Kiwanis adviser Vivian Mars‐chik, assisted in sorting over 54,000 lbs of food.

Both the EHMS Builders Club and HHHS Key Club participated in the Killeen Christmas Parade. Participating rhere is fun for the students and gives all the clubs visibility in the community.

The Kiwanis Club Christmas project was providing fruit baskets for local nursing home residents. The HHHS Key Club handmade Christmas cards for all and delivered them and the baskets to over a hundred residents.

On Tuesday, January 20, 2015, the Kiwanis Club of Sun City-Georgetown wel‐comed our Texas State Representative, Dr. Marsha Farney, who provided her views on the upcoming Legislative session.

Dr. Farney spoke about her background in edu‐cation, not in medicine, she joked, having taught at various levels in education including the col‐lege level at Texas A&M. Prior to being elected State Representative for District 20, she was elected and served on the Texas State Board of Education. Education is a priority for her.

In addition to serving in the Legislature, she is passionate about giving back to the community and gives her time to the Williamson County

Children’s Advo-cacy Center and The Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Georgetown. She is well aware of the Sun City Georgetown Kiwanis Club’s activity in the areas of help‐ing children and praised the club for our involvement.

Many of the ideas she turns into bills and presents to the legislature come from her District voters, including ideas from Sun City residents. Our own member and Past Governor Gene Jantzen has proposed that the ‘Cowboy Hat’ become the official state chapeau. Dr. Farney will create a bill to accomplish this, as not all bills need be of a serious nature. Her talk was shorter than she would have wished, she said, but she

needed to attend the festivities at the State Capitol for the inauguration of our new governor, Greg Abbott.
