KHS Update
Dear Parents/Carers,
The last fortnight has seen the exam period really get underway and with this, the ‘rites of
passage’ experiences that see Year 11 and Y13 moving into the next phase of their lives. Y11
going onto next steps in education or training and Y13 as the next generation of young
adults ready to make an impact on society.
We are incredibly proud of them all!
Our invigilation team have already noted what a wonderful group Year 11 are in terms of
the responsible way in which they’ve undertaken the exams.
Our Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13) have made us proud in many ways this year. Just in the last
few weeks I’ve noted:
Successful DofE expeditions (Gold and Silver)
Our sixth form STEM team competed in the Engineering Education Scheme over the
course of this year. The team was brilliant and had worked with Loughborough
University; JLR; staff at the school and each other to develop a hole sensor for off-road
vehicles
Konnect group co-curating the British Motor Museum’s major exhibition; the group’s
next lead Tom, attended the first Kineton Business Breakfast in the village and was
praised for being such a great ambassador for the school
Supporting students in lower years in the school through activities such as; mentoring,
classroom support; acting as reading buddies
Fund raising by selling ice-pops (very successfully) at lunchtimes
I’ve even spotted a few sixth formers cleaning the Common Room kitchen!
Our extremely well attended year 12 Parents’ consultation evening took a slightly new
format this week with workshops on using PIXL resources and UCAS applications as well as
advice and guidance from Mrs Moore, our study tutor. Thanks to everyone who made this
evening such a success!
Have a good bank holiday break.

Biology Challenge Competition
Last week we heard of the success of our Year 10 students
in the prestigious ‘Biology Challenge’ competition. Kineton
High School was well represented in The Royal Society of
Biology’s national competition, supported by Bioscience for
the Future and The University of Warwick.
The Biology challenge is a unique competition run for the first time this year, consisting
of two twenty-five minute multiple choice papers taken under supervised exam
conditions. Questions were set on the school curriculum, but also on natural history
knowledge and general awareness of flora and fauna.
Kineton students excelled and this year’s results included a Gold, three Silver and seven
Bronze awards. Several other students were Commended and Highly Commended.
Worldwide, almost 50,000 students took part across 527 schools with 5.1% overall
achieving gold and 9.4% achieving silver.
Mrs Brearley, Teacher of Biology said: “We are delighted with the results - to have eleven
students awarded Gold to Bronze is spectacular. The pupils have enjoyed participating
and their awards will look good on their CVs.”

Goodbye to Year 13
We had a fantastic day on Friday for Year 13 Leavers Day, everyone came dressed up as
their primary school job ambition so we had a few police officers and ballerinas roaming
around! We had speeches in the Sports Hall followed by a wonderful video montage that
the students had put together of their time at Kineton. We handed out the Leavers
Packages and students signed yearbooks and voted for the Prom awards. We ended the
day with a BBQ on the field and while there were tears, there was also a lot of laughter.
We will miss all of you, best of luck in your exams and we wish all good things for you in
the future.
Miss Loveridge and Ms Moore
Well done
The Art department would like to say how impressed they were with the Year 11
practical exam and Year 13 Art and photography A Level practical exam, which have just
been completed. Students were well prepared with exciting ideas developed in their
sketchbooks.
Year 11 worked on the theme of `Reflection` and were given 10 hours on their piece,
producing some varied and exciting Final paintings. Our Year 13 worked on the theme of
`Variations and Similarities `, culminating in a fifteen hour Final painting for our Art
students. A stressful time for all, but at least one exam is now completed for these
students.
Ms Evans and the Art department
Coming up...
The Art department would like to invite all to our yearly A Level exhibition which will be
in the Art studio on Wednesday 3rd July 5.30-6.30pm.

KHS Update
During this half term, Year 8 have been working on and developing their creative writing skills and have produced some amazing pieces of work. The extract below was written by Rosie S in HOY/SU. Well done to all Year 8 who have worked really hard.
Miss Balloch
Creative Writing
Tranquil. The babbling ripples sparkle in the rays of sunlight beaming into the
stream: like stars twinkling in the crisp, cobalt sky. Rhythmically birds are chirping,
insects clicking, monkeys squealing creating a luscious blend of rainforest sounds.
Gorillas crouching around timid youths as their looming shadow supplies closure
for their youths. Animals playing as joyfully as a circus; orang-utans swinging like a
trapeze, cheetahs pouncing – elephants ploughing through the rich vegetation as
majestically as a King. The vibrant flowers are smiling as life runs past them.
What happens when humans intervene?
The blazing sun strolls up through the towering trees as morning breaks out. A
smell of unfamiliar smoke rises. Around the gushing, emerald waterfall appears a
few children splashing around, giggling with content smiles. Adults starting
intensely at the still birds flash their large cameras – stomping carelessly over the
fresh, green bushes. A flurry of large men come flooding over, thudding on the
ground as they run. “This would be an ever so wonderful location for a new palm
oil plantation: big sun, earthy soil, just build a road through the other useless
rainforest!”
The dismal sky projects a graphite grey colour. Dry soil crack, crack, cracking as the
thunderous machinery clambers over it like a hoover on a carpet. Clouds of dust
shoot up so any trace of the exciting colour was murdered – lost…gone.
Enclosed by a ring of blistering fire the surviving orang-utan gazes into the once
beautiful picturesque rainforest which now persists of row after row after row of
palm oil plants. Flashbacks of terror fill memories played on repeat in the pools of
his chocolate brown eyes. Lost are his mum, his dad, cousins, grandparents. He’s
left with nothing but a floor of burnt trees, corpses of innocent animals and no
home.
You asked what happens when human intervene.

EES Engineering Competition
On Thursday 2nd May, the EES engineering competition came
to end at Solihull academy events centre with the celebration
and assessment day.
The project began in October, a team of 5 year 12 students
were paired with three graduate engineers from Jaguar Land
Rover, which they met with weekly for an hour after school
throughout the year along with Mr Richardson and Mr Parsons. On top of this the team
spent a launch day at Coventry university, a day at the JLR testing site in Gaydon and a two
day residential at Loughborough university where they had access to the engineering
facilities in order to build their model.
The team decided their project aim would be to develop a new automatic braking system
for the range rover sport. After months of hard work and the team; Myles I, Adam P, Finlay
D, Louis C and Lucy S, headed to Solihull to present their project to a board of professional
engineers to judge their work against the 63 other teams at the national event.
They set up a stand at the exhibition centre where they could present their project and
demonstrate their working demo robot. Here they showed off the braking system they
developed on a test track that was also handmade and programmed by the team.
After this they produced a fifteen-minute presentation to small panel of judges from
engineering companies describing and showing off their project.
After a long day and a large amount of hard work the team of young engineers were given
outstanding feedback on all aspects of their project. Each member of the team gained a lot
from the whole experience, from real life workplace skills and experience working along-
side qualified engineers to project management skills. It also gave them a chance to meet
employers and have directly received opportunities for apprenticeships and work
experience for the future.

Student Achievements
Netball
Isobel L in Year 8 played in the inter county tournament on Sunday 19th May and her team, Rugby 1, won the U13’s. It was a fantastic tournament with all teams really playing phenomenally well. In fact, umpires and coaches had to tell them to calm down because they all wanted to win so badly. It was a joy to watch yesterday, with all players performing brilliantly. Isobel was also awarded the Most Improved County Player trophy for the Rugby squad. Well done Isobel on your fantastic achievement.
Lily E, also in Year 8, was awarded the Most Improved County Player for the Heart of England squad. Well done Lily on your amazing achievement
Sprinting
Thomas W in Year 7 recently competed in the 100m at
Warwickshire AA Open Graded Meet and achieved an excellent
time of 15.45 seconds. He also got to meet Jonnie Peacock MBE
(who won Gold at 2012 and 2016 Paralympics in sprinting). Well
done Thomas on an excellent time.
Netball
Well done to our Year 8 A and B Teams who had convincing wins
in their opening matches against Sibford.
Rounders
U15 Tournment
The Year 10 team, despite limited practice, came second in their section of the South
Warwickshire Tournament. In the play-offs they were in a convincing position to win the
match but a tactical error meant we lost to Shipston by ½ a rounder. However, a
respectable 4th place was gained overall.
U14 Tournament
The girls managed to achieve second place in the their section but narrowly missed out
to Alcester Grammar in the play-offs. They finally achieved joint 3rd place. An excellent
result.
Year 10 vs Sibford
A great match, despite a much changed team, the fielding was tight and the accurate.
Molly W scored 6 rounders over all, with some great hitting from Megan and Roxy. The
final score was 15 – 12 to Kineton.

Leave of Absence
During Term Time 2018-19
The Supreme Court recently reached a decision in the
case of Platt v Isle of Wight Council which has clarified
the law on unauthorised leave, including holidays,
during term time. The parents of children of compulsory
school age are required to ensure that they attend
school on a regular basis. The Supreme Court has
made clear that attending school ‘regularly’ means that
the children must attend school on every day that they
are required to do so. As such, the parents of any child
who is absent from school without authorisation for any
length of time are likely to be considered as committing
an offence under s444 of the Education Act 1996.
Head Teachers retain the ability to authorise leave in
accordance with the Education (Pupil Registration)
(England) Regulations 2006. When considering such
requests for a leave of absence, the school are obliged
to act within the law. Head Teachers may not grant any
leave of absence during term time unless there are
exceptional circumstances relating to the application. If
the leave is granted, head teachers are able to
determine the number of school days a child can be
absent for.
It is for the Head Teacher to decide what is
‘exceptional’ and it is at their discretion if the
circumstances warrant the leave to be granted. The
school can only consider Leave of Absence requests
which are made by the ‘resident’ parent.
Each application for a leave of absence will be
considered on a case by case basis and on its own
merits.
Where applications for leave of absence are made in
advance and refused, the child will be required to be in
school on the dates set out in the application. If the
child is absent during that period, it will be recorded as
an unauthorised absence, which may result in legal
action being taken against the parent(s), by way of a
Fixed Penalty Notice.
Student Absence Procedure
If a student is absent, please call the 24 hour Absence
Line daily on 01926 645 611 and leave a brief message
stating their name, tutor group and reason.
Failure to make an application for leave in advance can
also result in a Fixed Penalty Notice being issued to the
parent(s).
All matters of unauthorised absence relating to a Leave
of Absence will be referred to the Warwickshire
Attendance Service, part of Warwickshire County
Council.
It is important to note, Fixed Penalty Notices are
issued to each parent of each absent child, (for
example 2 children and 2 parents, means each parent
will receive 2 invoices in the amount of £120 each,
totalling £240 for both children, this is reduced to £60
per child if paid within 21 days).
Where a Fixed Penalty Notice is not paid within the
required timeframe as set out on the notice, the matter
will be referred to Warwickshire County Council’s Legal
Services to consider instigating criminal proceedings
under S444 Education Act 1996.
Fixed Penalty Notices are issued in accordance with
Warwickshire County Council’s Code of Conduct for
Penalty Notices.
We greatly appreciate parental support to reduce the total amount of days lost due to holidays. We are committed to working in partnership with you to enable your child to reach their academic targets and to support their social development. For this to happen we need to keep individual attendance as high as possible - we all need to play our part.
Your child’s progress academically as well as socially is our shared priority.
Medical/Dental Appointment
If a student will not be present during
morning registration due to a medical/dental
appointment, please provide Student Services with
written notice of the appointment prior to the event.
Warwickshire Secondary School pupils recorded 8,895 half
day sessions of absence due to holiday in the Autumn/Spring
term during academic year 2017/18. This is an increase of
1,816 on the previous year.
