Emotionless societyHellen Keller, well known American author, activist once said,

“The best and the most beautiful things in the world cannot beseen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart”

In todays’ world when many of us are living somewhat roboticlifestyle which is devoid of deeper meaning and purpose and hasbecome somewhat visionless and passionless, are we displayingemotions towards each other or towards our society? A study bythe University of Michigan in 2017 found that college studentstoday are showing less empathy than previous decades, a 40%decline in fact. That is an alarming number.

Emotions critically influence all aspects of our lives, from howwe live, work, learn and play, to the decisions we make, big andsmall. Emotions drive how we communicate and connect with eachother, and impact our health and well-being. Human emotional in-telligence (or your EQ) is our ability to recognize not only our ownemotions but also those of other people, and to use emotions toguide our behaviour, adapt to different environments and achieveour goals.

Today, we are living in a digital world and are surrounded bylots of hyper-connected systems, smart devices and advanced AI(artificial intelligence) systems. In other words, lots of IQ, but noEQ. That’s a problem. Just look at how we use our mobile devicesand interact with intelligent agents such as Siri and Amazon’s Al-exa and do not interact with human beings.

People have less time to reflect on anything as they becomedominated by a need to act, a need to be online, robotically alwayschecking. Instead of enhancing close bonds, technology has facil-itated avoidance of direct person-to-person contact, which takestoo much time. We maintain the illusion that we are connectedmore closely than ever by the number of Facebook “likes” weaccumulate. Our sense of connection exists in the action, not anaccumulated, deepening experience. It is not unusual to see allthe family members busy on their phones while dining out. Evenat home each one is hooked on to their mobiles checking aimless-ly the various posts on social media.

Getting rid of technology is not the answer, but society mustfind a balance. Empathy is very valuable, maybe the most valuableresource for humanity. There is a need to introspect and ask fewquestion from ourselves: Do we spend more then an hour a day onany social media platform? Are we constantly in a reactive state, which prevents us from listening to others? Do we look at ourphone when we are in a conversation with another? Do we answercalls at the dinner table or other valuable family moments? Do wefind ourselves choosing to text instead of having a conversation? Are we having conversations over text or email that should bedone in person? If we have answered yes to any of these ques-tions, then we certainly have an imbalance.

As much as we may appreciate modern technology, it haschanged our ability to communicate on many levels. Communica-tion is becoming a lost art and it is failing miserably at the hands ofour children.

Social media has many advantages, but there are plenty of draw-backs as well. Sitting behind the screen of a computer or phonegives people the courage to say what they want without a filter orcompassion. Our emotional intelligence is getting lost in transla-tion and we are slowly losing the ability to be honest with eachother and work through difficult conversations; to take a momentand sit with a situation, even when it feels uncomfortable, and movetoward communication to solve the problem.

Enjoying the gifts that come with technology is important, butmoving forward into a new age with balance is even more impor-tant. Maybe the biggest cost we’ve encountered already is theharm to human relationships. A small start is our best next stepand it counts.

It’s almost a dailyaffair for me. Peoplewhen they walk intomy counselling roomfor healing self or anyof their family mem-bers, ask a commonquestion and that is“Sir, how many ses-sions will be needed tocome out of the diffi-culty or problem?

Please be veryclear on this that theduration of sufferingsone has gone throughmay not have a directbearing on the timerequired for healingthe person.

Mental or behav-ioural disorders candevelop due to:• Known/ Identifi-

able or totally uni-dentifiable reasonsby the family mem-bers.

• Sudden shock e.g.death of a belovedone, unexpectedbreak in relation-ship, mental orphysical abuse etc.The factors major-

ly impacting the timerequired for healingare:1. Duration of suffer-

ing/disorder.2. The root or proba-

ble cause.3. The most impor-

tant factor is thewillingness to winand fighting spiritof the person goingthrough the chal-lenges. If the per-son is 100 percentcommitted, pas-sionate and is will-ing to give anyprice for the recov-ery then the ses-sions required be-comes very less.

4. Willingness of thefamily members tolearn & change toextend full supportin the healing pro-

Efforts & duration for Healingcess. When familymembers are onlycomplaining and notwilling to learn andchange then addi-tional sessions arerequired to createwillingness and pre-pare them to gothrough the healingprocess. Here, I would like to

share few importanttips which will help ineffective healing:1. Never ever give up

under any circum-stances.

2. Once you have em-barked on the heal-ing journey thenplease remain fo-cussed on healingand not on the timetaken.

3. The person gettinghealed should behelped to accept thathis/her present diffi-culties are also caus-ing serious discom-fort to the near anddear ones.

4. Totally avoid shar-ing the progress inhealing to the rela-tives or gossip mon-gers who are unlike-ly to understand theprocess and your suf-ferings and may de-motivate you.

5. During the healingprocess the familymembers must takethe role of a Nurseand they must strict-ly follow the instruc-tions given by thetherapist.

6. The entire familymust get united, re-main together andmust encourageeach other to fightthe situation. I haveexperienced miracu-lous progress wher-

ever the entire fam-ily extended their100% support andremained tightlyunited with loveand prayers.

7. Never accuse/ in-sult the personwho’s gettinghealed as it willonly make the mat-ters worst.

8. Never lose hopeduring the process.

9. Get devoted withthe therapist by fol-lowing the advisesand the process re-ligiously.I have succeeded in

curing many peoplewho were goingthrough serious diffi-culties. They all arenow leading a wonder-

ful life. Willingness towin and total supportfrom family memberswill help the persongoing through the dif-ficulties face ups anddowns with great easeand finally emerge asa winner. With totaldevotion, I am verysure you will be re-lieved of your suffer-ings and will succeedin leading a beautifullife ahead.

Living with hurt isof no use and adds novalue in life hence putyourself in top gearand walk at your ownpace without compar-ing yourself with oth-ers and you will reachthe goal of completerecovery and everlast-ing happiness. The writer is a consultingcouncellor and Psychol-ogist at Vedanta HealthCare & NMIMS, Kharghar.Mob.: 9324507182 E-mail: [email protected]

Positive Points

Akshay Kumar hasnailed it again this timetoo as he tackles a sen-sitive subject with hisexceptional comic tim-ing. Diljit Doshanjhpromises a good perfor-mance, while KiaraAdvani seems to be fol-lowing her ownrhythm. KareenaKapoor Khan looks in-sanely beautiful andher acting too creates agood impact. Adil Hus-sain and Tisca Chopraare too good in theirroles. The film is abreath of fresh air. Itpromises a new plot inthe universe of yawn-inducing repetitive con-tent. Hats off to direc-tor Raj for selecting asubject which is a tabooin the Indian society. Also, the very idea ofshowing two moderncouples looking for pro-gressive & scientificways to have children

is a break from themundane bollywoodmovies. This comic ca-per has a bold touch. Itis entertaining withwitty content mixedwith emotions, comedy, romance and drama ina way that everyonewill enjoy. It has theright emotionalquotient thatkeeps the view-ers entertainedt h r o u g h o u t .The last 15 min-utes will surelytake you on ane m o t i o n a lride.Raj Mehta'sdebut directori-al is a winner. The movie couldhave easily nosedived into as l a p s t i c k ,cringe zone, buthe made sure itdoes not. Themovie also is milesahead of Akshay Ku-mar's last release'Housefull 4' in terms ofhumour. Editing (Man-ish More) and Screen-play (Jyoti Kapoor, RajMehta and RishabhSharma) are crisp, ex-cept for few scenes. Ex-otic locations appeal tothe eye. The narrationis very tight. Dialoguesare quite bold & funny.Cinematography (Vish-nu Rao) and other pro-

duction values are oftop standard. Music byTanishk Bagchi, Roch-ak Kohli, Lauv,Lijo,George-DJ Chetas, Bad-shah, Manj Musik-Her-bie Sahara, Sukhbirand Kshmr. ‘SaudaKhara Khara’ has got apeppy bhangra-pop vibe

where singer Sukhbirresurfaces in the re-make of his own chart-buster celebration num-ber. “Laal Ghagra”which is again a remixis surely rocking andhas the groove. The restof the songs are pass-able. Music is strictlyPunjabi.

Negative Points

The film is based ona modern fertility sub-ject IVF ,which may notgo well with the single

screen audience as inIndia, certain section ofmasses are still stuckwith the old traditionalvalues. Certain scenesare unrequired andcould have been easilychopped off or betterwritten. The bar scenebetween Akshay Ku-mar & Diljit Dosanjhwhere they suddenlyget into an unreasobleargument in midst oftheir drinks was notneeded. The same goesfor Akshay Kumarwhen he escorts KiaraAdvani to the wash-room at his place, hislaughter scene was un-necessary and no wherein place. The excessivemelodrama that domi-nates the second halffalls flat with a bit ofexaggeration whichdips the pace of the filmand tighter editing, es-pecially in the secondhalf, was needed. In-spite of making such abig budget movie, thetummies of pregnantKareena Kapoor Khan& Kiara Advani lookedlike a fake padding, al-most looking unreal.

Wars only bring destructionWars bring about destruction of lives and property. It is easy to start a

war but difficult to put an end to it. It is clear from history that wheneverthere is a war, it is the people who ultimately suffer.

Hence, wars should be avoided and there should be peace talks betweenthe countries that want to wage a war.

Deal is done but chaos continuesShiv Sena led Maha Vikas Aghadi is trying to settle down, but the port-

folio allocation brought the displeasure of many from Shiv Sena and Con-gress leaving NCP a safe bet in the home ministry formation. NCP gotboth Home and Finance departments and that put them on driver’s seat. The two other coalition partner members fume in silence missing a goldenchance to get a ministerial birth. Whereas first time MLA got a ministerialbirth despite showing inexperience and there is smoke in Maha Vikas Aghadiand that may turn to fire sooner or later.

People waiting to get plum portfolios were disappointed and there isalready threat of resigning the MLA post. The Shiv Sena list include CMsUddhav Thackeray’s son and blue eyed boy got the place of his choice. CMis keeping the General Administration but that is already handled NCP inthe guise of Sharad Pawar as a remote control. The tainted Ajit Pawar gotthe planning and finance after getting elected as deputy CM for the secondtime in a very short period.

Airline MayhemAir India flight faced public wrath in the Delhi-Mumbai flight who threat-

ened to break cockpit door and the flyers manhandled the cabin crew aswell. The tension among the flyers is increasing day by day despite havinglow cost flights in the country. To add salt to the wound, the fog and inclem-ent weather in north and north eastern states cause further tension. Withthe result there is considerable delay in take off and landing of flights in theheavy fog and number of cancellation of flights were made and reschedul-ing done at odd hours that caused inconvenience to the passengers, result-ing in mounting pressure among the cabin crew and the passengers. Thisis happening during winter season and the Indian Airline industry faceslots of problems in dealing with flyers. This includes a female flyer man-handling a cabin crew to open the main exit gate.

Mayhem in JNUThe mayhem created on JNU campus on 5th January by Goons from

allegedly by the students wing of BJP is not only disturbing but highlycondemnable. But the real shocker was the pathetic (or should one saypartisan) approach of the Delhi police. There was presence of the force inthe campus but they did nothing to stop the mayhem, on the contrary ifsome students are to be believed, they even sided with the goons in thrash-ing the students.

How could masked goons in huge number with weapons and a clearintention to go on a rampage not be stopped by the security at the entrancegate? Does it not raise genuine doubts about them very well knowing aboutthese goons and their shameful plan?

Why didn’t the police enter the campus for over two hours even as manylives were at stake? Why couldn’t they catch the culprits even after theywere very much in the campus? And finally were the goons given safepassage as the lights were “deliberately” switched off”?. Delhi police has lotto answer, will it come out on whose instructions were they mute specta-tors to this heinous crime. How low can the politicians fall to stick to theirpoint, more so to their egos?

Solution to prevent students’ protestStudents who protest must be made to forego that semester and reap-

pear in the next semester. This the educational institutions must take inwriting from the students and their parents or guardians at the time ofadmission. Or else no admission will be given. Students join the academicinstitutions only for studies and not for protesting and politicking. Engag-ing in activities other than studies tantamounts to conflict of interest andhence must be totally avoided for their own welfare and progress.
