Operation from CCC

• operation of Linac2/PSB relied in the past very much on local interventions by the operators (on their own or guided by equipment specialists)• all equipment is remote controllable, but not all is remote resettable (after power cut)• identify and consolidate equipment, which is not fully remote resettable• will move to a piquet system for the remaining local interventions (importance of GTPM)

Linac 2: Remote Control

• 2004 listed equipment that still requires local resets- source: improved damping of flashovers has reduced Electro Magnetic Interference in the source area, and therefore source equipment rarely requires resetting; some supplies are not remotely resettable- RF: remote resetting system installed and tested- quadrupole supplies: about 70 Oltronix supplies cannot be remotely reset (failure is very rare) G64 control chassis crashes happen quite frequently and will now require piquet intervention, in particular after power cuts and water stoppages- steerers: 4 steerer sets (H+V) will be migrated to new supplies which will be remotely resettable; 5 steerer sets remain on old supplies in 2006

PSB: Remote Control

• 2004-2005 survey of hardware w.r.t. remote operation from CCC; identified equipment, which is not remote resettable - MPS: 7 remote resets in a row, then local “serious” (water, missing voltage, …) incident requires always local reset - >100 multipole power supplies - one quadrupole supply (sw fix in place) - a few steerers in the ISOLDE line - rf cavity interlock (works remotely in 1/3 cases) and some power supplies - ISOLDE watchdog reset: sw solution replaces switch - transv. feedback reset localfollowed up with equipment groups (PO, RF, BDI)

PSB: Remote Control ct’d

• where possible, replace this equipment (e.g. multipole p.s.) by remote resettable power supplies• rf cavity electronics would basically require to re-build the system - not an option replace >20 year old power supplies by reliable equipment to minimise the risk of failure • included in consolidation program (all ended up above Simon’s cut-off line)

no show-stoppers identified to operate the PSB remotely from CCC; will rely more on piquets

ISOLDE: Remote Control

• don’t really bother, as they will work locally anyway

Page 7: K.Hanke – PS/SPS Days – 19/01/06 K.Hanke - PS/SPS Days 19/01/06 Recommissioning Linac2/PSB/ISOLDE from CCC remote operation from CCC upgrades & changes.

Linac 2, PSB and ISOLDE HW Changes

• Linac2: • new electronics for the transformers, which are very critical for the Linac (for the watchdog and as only diagnostic for the first 30 meters)• PSB:• FWS: 3/8 seriously damaged, try to repair them hope to start-up with 8 working scanners• Q-strip power supplies will be changed; needs some software work• BDL supplies might be changed• BTM.QNO05/10/20 have new control module• ISOLDE: • no hardware changes that affect upstream machines

PSB Fast Wire Scanners

• repair under way, BI tries to have all 8 devices back operational for 2006 start-up• hope to have no more erratic movements following re-cabling of the rack in 2005

see APC of 9 December 2005

Linac 2, PSB and ISOLDE Start-up

• Linac2: - start up from the Linac 2 local control room, and try to communicate effectively with the CCC- 2006 schedule is valid, 4 weeks should be sufficient• PSB:- start-up fully from CCC- local interventions to be done by piquet- sufficient time for setting-up operational beams- need to be able to run in parallel with PS interventions (inflector zone must be operational)• ISOLDE: - start-up (and run) from local control room as in 2005; communicate with CCC

Controls Issues

• separation of Technical Network (TN) from General Purpose Network (GPN)• Common Console Manager (CCM) running in parallel with old X-motif console manager• PSB application programs tested, no problems • LASER alarm program available in parallel to the old alarm program from start-up• OASIS will be used instead of NAOS from start-up

FESA Implementation

• tests done in 2005 with PSB intensity measurement - not sufficiently conclusive to start-up with FESA • start-up with old system• dedicate 1day (11 April) for final FESA test and approval; need all specialists and very good preparation• if things go well, continue run as from week 2 with new system for the transformers

FESA not from the very beginning, but almost from thebeginning; further evolution during the run (positionmeasurement)

Equipment and Support Needed

• rely on piquet interventions• rely on equipment specialists (e.g. Booster FWS etc)• need support from CO and BI/SW (FESA)• appreciate e.g PO co-ordinator

For an efficient start-up, we need the hardware andapplication programs available as they were in 2005

Conclusions

• no show-stoppers for the operation of the Linac2-PSB-ISOLDE complex from CCC identified• remaining local interventions will have to be resolved by the piquets• maintain personal contact with equipment specialists will be an issue• see you in the CCC
