As November comes to a close and December is nearly upon us, it is hard to believe that the first term of the school year is over. It has been an exciting first term in Kindergarten. The Kindergarten teachers have seen such great progress in the stu-dents in regards to them becoming familiar with their classroom routines and expectations, seeing them be-

come more independent, and seeing the youngest students at KSC become little leaders in their own ways. They have continued to learn about fall weather, activities and holidays. Letter recognition and sounds have also been a focus in literacy. The Kindergarten students have studied what Remembrance Day is and have learned poems that teach about the poppy. In Math, students continue to work on recognizing and writing numbers from zero to ten, pattern recognition, pattern building and sorting objects. Students have also been learning about Habit 3: Begin With the End in Mind through various children’s stories. The stories along

with their classroom Mission Statements are a great way to demonstrate to our young Kindergarten students how to plan ahead, set goals, do things that make a difference, and how to be good

citzens. Kind Regards, Ms. Chidley and Ms. Kaur

Students will be introduced to our second unit for Literacy, which is Explanation. Explanatory

texts tell the reader how and why things are the way they are, or how things work. Students will

learn how to research on a topic of choice by using different forms to collect information such as books, inter-

net, videos, etc.

In math we are focusing on our addition and subtraction strategies unit. In this unit students will be able to

develop number sense and represent algebraic expressions in multiple ways. Students will demonstrate an

understanding of addition (limited to 1- and 2 digit numerals) with answers to 100* and the corresponding

subtraction by using personal strategies for adding and subtracting with and without the support of

manipulatives. For science, we are currently looking at our “Hot and Cold temperature” unit. In this unit our goal

is to have students recognize the effects of heating and cooling, and identify methods for heating and cooling.

For social studies, we have continued learning about Meteghan, Saskatoon, and Iqaluit. We have expanded on

various traditions and celebrations that are significant in each community. This term, students were to

demonstrate an in depth understanding of traditions and the way of life in each community.

It’s hard to believe that we are about to go on Christmas break! We hope you will all take this time to reflect on

your child's progress and spend quality time with loved ones. In Language Arts, we will continue to focus on learning new sight words and short vowel sounds. Over the break we encourage you to review those short vow-

el sounds and Dolch Words to improve reading fluency. When reading stories, we will be focusing on predicting and asking questions about what we read. Students are encouraged to read 20 minutes each night to build on their comprehension and decoding skills. In math, we have been developing our number sense through base ten blocks, comparing and developing counting strategies ie. Counting on. We will be moving on to our measurement unit. In Science students have been identifying primary and secondary colours and developing strategies to com-pare and identify how to create shades. Students have also been exploring transparent, translucent and opaque

objects. In Social, students are examining our responsibilities and rights at home and school. Students are also

exploring how their choices and actions can impact groups and communities.

KG: Our youngest Punjabi learners have shown amazing progress in learning Punjabi. Most of them can write and recognize all Punjabi alphabets and are learning to read and write Mukta and Kanna words. The parents are

appreciated for helping them practicing Punjabi at home. Some students are working at somewhat slow pace and

they are still learning to print Punjabi alphabets and recognize their sounds. The parents are requested to

encourage them in completing their winter break homework. In Gurmat, we will be practicing 5th and 6th pauri of

Japji Sahib in class.

G-1, 2 & 3:

Basic Level: The students will continue working on Punjabi alphabets, mixed letters, and different matra words.

Most of the students have shown great improvement in their Punjabi learning. The students are encouraged to practice writing and reading matra words at home every day for at least 15 minutes. The parents are requested

to encourage them in completing their winter break homework.

Advanced Level: The higher level students will continue working on all matra words, comprehending Punjabi text,

Punjabi vocabulary, reading strategies and writing practice. The parents are requested to encourage them in

completing their winter break homework.

In Gurmat, the students will be memorizing next pauris of Japji Sahib. The parents are requested to help them in memorizing patth every day.

Dear Grade 3 Parents,

We can’t believe how time has flown and we are already heading into December. It must be because of all the fun we are having with learning this year. In Literacy, we have been honing our Narrative writing skills by using sensory imagery, colorful adjectives, vivid verbs, varied sentence structures and by “showing not telling”. Our Narratives are maturing as we learn how to organize our thoughts into an introduction, an elaborated middle and a wrap up

conclusion. We continue to sharpen our skills in grammar.

In Math we are nearing the completion of our second unit “Numbers to 1000”. Students have developed number sense by saying the number sequence 0 to 1000 forward and backward by 3s, 4s, 5s, 10s, 25s, or 100s using any starting points. Students have also been working on comparing, ordering and estimating numbers from 0 to 1000. Our next unit will help students to learn effective strategies for carrying and borrowing as well as solving Addition

and Subtraction problems.

In Social Studies students created beautiful presentations about the Inca life and have now leaped across continents to Ukraine. We are on our way learning the geographic characteristics of Ukraine which will continue with a research project on the social, cultural and linguistic characteristics that affect quality of life in the commu-

nity.

In Science, we have moved on to our second unit “hearing and sound” in which students explain the role that sound plays in communication and describe how the human ear senses vibrations. Our in-school field trip with Teacher’s Pet was a roaring success and will definitely highlight their learning. Thanks to the parents that volunteered their time! We cannot say enough how awesome the parents of the grade 3s are! Make sure to check out our classroom

websites for fun pictures and more information on what is going on in grade 3!
