Academic Standards

Degree Requirements To receive the Master of Business Administration degree, participants must pass all assigned Executive MBA courses within the guidelines and procedures stated. All required credits shall be obtained within 5 years after the commencement of the program. Waivers to curriculum components are not permitted.

The Kellogg–HKUST Honor Code All students enrolled in the Kellogg–HKUST Executive MBA Program agree to abide by the Kellogg–HKUST Honor Code. The Kellogg–HKUST Honor Code governs student conduct pertaining to all academic, placement and extracurricular activities associated with the Kellogg–HKUST Executive MBA program.

Each student agrees: 1. Not to seek an unfair advantage over other students,

including but not limited to giving or receiving unauthorized aid during completion of academic requirements.

2. To truthfully represent fact and self at all times. 3. To respect the property and personal rights of all

members of the Kellogg–HKUST community.

4. To uphold the Kellogg–HKUST Honor Code by reporting all material violations and by fully cooperating with any Honor Code proceedings.

The students of the Kellogg–HKUST regard honesty and integrity as qualities essential to the practice and profession of management. The purpose of the Kellogg–HKUST Honor Code is to promote these qualities so that each student can fully develop his or her potential. Upon admission, each student makes an agreement with fellow students to abide by the Kellogg–HKUST Honor Code. Students who violate the code violate this agreement and must accept the sanction imposed by the Kellogg–HKUST community. The Kellogg–HKUST Honor Code is administered by students and is based on the concept of self-government. The efficacy of such a student-administered honor code is dependent upon a high degree of dedication to the ideals of honesty, integrity and equal opportunity reflected by the code. The Kellogg–HKUST Honor Code requires that each student acts with integrity in all Kellogg–HKUST activities and that each student holds peers to the same standard. In agreeing to abide by the code, Kellogg–HKUST students also agree to report suspected violations. By not tolerating lapses in honesty and integrity, the Kellogg–HKUST community affirms the importance of these values. The intent of the Kellogg–HKUST Honor Code is to express the ethical standards of the Kellogg–HKUST community. It does not attempt to be a list of rules and sanctions.

Academic Integrity & Honor Principle All members of the Kellogg–HKUST community – participants, faculty and staff – have a duty to enforce the honor code, to report violations and to cooperate in the investigation and adjudication of alleged violations of this code. It goes without saying that we do not anticipate participants to violate the honor code; however, University policy requires us to make participants aware that all participants registered in the Program are considered bound by this code. All scholastic assignments are evaluated under the code; any work not otherwise attributed is assumed to be the participant’s own work or, in the case of study group projects, the work of group members. Infractions of this code also include the unauthorized giving or receiving of information or any other act of collusion during an examination, as well as the giving of false testimony. It is understood that by enrolling in the Kellogg–HKUST Executive MBA program, participants accept personal responsibility to uphold the honor code. In the event that a participant is terminated from the program because of an infraction of the code, the participant will have the option of a written appeal. The student may submit an appeal to the Dean. The appeal must be made in writing within fourteen days of the student’s receiving the decision of the Academic Director, stating the grounds for the appeal and including any evidence or documentation not previously submitted. Normally appeals will be considered only on the basis of procedural irregularities or new evidence. The decision of the Dean is final.

Honor Code Violations A participant who is guilty of dishonesty in academic work is subject to penalties ranging from failure in a course to suspension or exclusion from the University. Participants are not permitted to drop any course when a charge of academic dishonesty is pending. It is the responsibility of the faculty to review all cases of academic dishonesty, including the following: Plagiarism Submitting material that in part or whole is not entirely the participant’s work without citing those same portions to their correct source. Cheating Using unauthorized notes, study aids or information from another participant or participant’s paper on an examination; altering a graded work after it has been returned, then submitting the work for re-grading; allowing another person to do your work and submitting that work under your name; or submitting identical or similar papers for credit in more than one course without getting prior permission from the course instructors. Fabrication Presenting data in a piece of work that was not gathered in accordance with guidelines defining the appropriate methods for collecting or generating data and failing to include a substantially accurate account of the method by which the data was gathered or collected. Aiding and abetting dishonesty Providing material or information to another person with the knowledge that this material or information would be used improperly.

Falsification of records and official documents Altering documents affecting academic records; forging signature of authorization or falsifying information on an official academic document, grade report, or any other document designed to meet or exempt a participant from a University regulation. Sanctions If the student is found guilty, the following sanctions may be imposed, singly or in combination:

1. Loss of student rights and privileges for a specified period;

2. Required service; 3. Reduced or failing grade; 4. Probation; 5. Suspension for a definite or indefinite period; 6. Exclusion (i.e. expulsion) from the Kellogg–HKUST Executive MBA program; and/or 7. A combination of the above Where a student is confirmed to have committed an act of academic dishonesty, a note will be made in the student’s record. This note will be removed on graduation, provided that the student does not commit more than one offense. Where a student is confirmed to have committed a second act of academic dishonesty, the student will be dismissed from the program and the notation in the official transcript indicating academic dishonesty will not be removed.

Detailed information on the Honor Code can be found online at: http://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/stu_aff/policies/honorcode.htm

Academic Information

Grading System One of the following grades will be given for each instructional unit:

HP High Pass P Pass LP Low Pass U Unsatisfactory, or no pass Y Incomplete

Grades will be based on class participation, examinations, papers, presentation and/or group work. The faculty will determine the grading systems depending on the nature of the course. Participants must pass all courses to receive the MBA degree. An “LP” is considered a “Pass”. Grade additions, deletions or changes are not possible after a degree is conferred. Incompletes An incomplete (Y) will be given if students fail to complete all the course requirements within the time allotted by the instructor. Note, however, that the consent of the instructor, requested and received prior to the course requirement’s due date, is necessary for an incomplete to be given. If a student requests and receives an incomplete, that person must consult with the faculty member for an approved length of extension. Failure to remove the “Y” within 10 weeks of the deadline will result in a “U” grade.

Page 10: KH19 Student Handbook - HKUST Business School · HANDBOOK FOR KELLOGG-HKUST EXECUTIVE MBA PROGRAM ... Deputy Program Director Eva Wong Tel: (852) 2358 2203 Email: eva.wong…

Unsatisfactory

If a student fails to demonstrate proficiency in the subject matter according to standards deemed acceptable by the instructor, he or she will be given a grade of “U” (unsatisfactory). A student will also earn an unsatisfactory grade by failing to take a final exam at the scheduled time, or by failing to turn in a final project or exam by the due date, without prior approval from the faculty. To earn credit in a course which was initially graded unsatisfactory, a student will consult with the faculty to develop a plan either to retake the final exam after additional preparation and study, or to retake the course with the next cohort. If the student is allowed to retake the final exam, the new grade earned will replace the initial grade of “U” on the official transcript. If the course is repeated with the next cohort, both the initial grade of “U” and the subsequent grade earned will be recorded on the transcript. In either case, the full spectrum of grading will apply. Re-grading Any student who wishes to contest a grade given for work completed at the Kellogg–HKUST Executive MBA program should adhere to the following procedures: 1. Students have up to 10 workings days after written

work has been graded and returned to them to submit it for re-grading.

2. Submissions for re-grading must be made in writing, with the student outlining the specific areas of the work that he or she feels were incorrectly graded. All submission should be signed and dated by the students.

3. Professors would re-grade the work that is being contested and return a written response to the student,

Page 11: KH19 Student Handbook - HKUST Business School · HANDBOOK FOR KELLOGG-HKUST EXECUTIVE MBA PROGRAM ... Deputy Program Director Eva Wong Tel: (852) 2358 2203 Email: eva.wong…

explaining the results of the review and indicating whether the student’s grade has been changed.

If a student remains dissatisfied with the grading process, he or she shall have up to five working days after receiving the re-graded work to submit it a second time for re-grading, as outlined in Step 2 above. Professor’s judgment on second submissions of the written work will be final. There are no provisions for students to appeal to outside parties in resolving grading disputes. Class attendance Students are expected to attend all sessions of courses for which they are registered. When unable to attend, the student should notify the faculty and program office in advance. Absence from class sessions will result in extra work, and can be a cause for a reduced grade in a course. Excessive absence, e.g. missing more than four sessions for a full course or missing more than two sessions for a half-unit course will result in a failure in the course. If the Academic Director finds attendance is an issue with a particular student, he reserves the right to limit the eligibility to participate in additional global electives.

When a core course is missed, the same course must be taken with the next cohort or at a partner school. A maximum of two courses can be postponed this way – if a greater study break is needed, the student must defer all study until the next cohort.

Page 12: KH19 Student Handbook - HKUST Business School · HANDBOOK FOR KELLOGG-HKUST EXECUTIVE MBA PROGRAM ... Deputy Program Director Eva Wong Tel: (852) 2358 2203 Email: eva.wong…

When an advanced course is missed, the student can consult as early as possible with the Academic Director to develop a solution, which could include courses at partner schools, or with HKUST EMBA or MBA classes. If no agreement can be reached, the Academic Director reserves the right to require replacement with another advanced course next cohort, deferring graduation.

Academic Advising The Academic Director is available for academic advising on weekdays in person or via email and telephone by appointments.

Academic Leave and Academic Dismissal Participants who fail to maintain good academic standing will have their records reviewed by the Program Office and may be required to take academic leave and have their study suspended. Poor academic standing and academic leave may result under the following conditions:

Receiving three initial one-unit course grades of "U" or an accumulation of five “LP” grades.

Failure to pass the retaken final exam for a course that was initially graded as “U”. Accumulating more than two “Y” grades at any given time.

Page 13: KH19 Student Handbook - HKUST Business School · HANDBOOK FOR KELLOGG-HKUST EXECUTIVE MBA PROGRAM ... Deputy Program Director Eva Wong Tel: (852) 2358 2203 Email: eva.wong…

12

The academic leave will last from six to twelve months during which students may apply for re-enrollment to the program at the end of their suspension. If the application for re-enrollment is approved, certain conditions may apply and the student must regain good academic standing in the module immediately following re-enrollment. Participants will be dismissed from the University if the conditions are not met. If re-enrollment to the program is not granted by the expiry of the academic leave, the suspension will be converted to a dismissal from the University. If re-enrolled to the program after the academic leave, the participant will be required to retake any failed core courses with the next cohort. Only two courses in the program may be retaken. Failure to pass a course on the first attempt in the retake would result in dismissal from the University. Students who have been dismissed from the University due to academic reasons or failure to meet the prescribed conditions set for re-enrollment at the end of an academic leave may not apply for re-admission into the same program. A participant who is expelled from the program for failing to comply with the Kellogg–HKUST honor code will also not be considered for re-admission.

Study Groups Participants will be assigned to study groups by the Program Office prior to the Orientation Day. Diversity of skills and expertise is always a key consideration in forming groups. We ensure each study group is well

rounded so as to enhance the group dynamics and facilitate the learning process.

If participants wish to make a change of study group, it is your responsibility to look for another group, request admittance to that group and then formally resign from your original group. Staff approval is necessary to finalize the arrangement.

Laptops Some faculty require students to use excel for assignments and examinations. You may wish to bring your laptops with Microsoft office installed for those courses. For details of IT/ technical requirements, please refer to KH19 student website.

Course Evaluations

On Sundays, each participant will be asked to complete an evaluation of classes for the weekend. Both the mid-course and final course evaluations will be reviewed by the Program Office for future planning and improvements. The mid-course evaluation will be sent to the faculty anonymously; while the final evaluation will only be released after grades are turned in.

Classroom Etiquette The Kellogg–HKUST Code of Classroom Etiquette has been established to assist student and faculty alike to foster appreciation for a classroom environment that enhances the learning experience for all students. Attention to the code will add value to the course by creating a more meaningful and constructive discussion. Students, therefore, are expected to demonstrate classroom etiquette based on the following principles:

Punctuality Participants are expected to arrive for class on time so that the professor may start and end the class according to schedule.

Exiting and Entering Participants are expected to remain in the classroom for the duration of the class. If a participant must depart early due to unavoidable circumstances, the participant should inform the faculty and Program Office before class.

Disruptive Behavior

Participants should demonstrate respect for the faculty and fellow participants during the class period. Participants, therefore, should refrain from distracting behavior such as using mobile phones or blackberries, disruptive eating, using laptops to surf the web or check e-mails and holding side conversations.

In essence, we emphasize respectful behavior in the classroom that contributes to the enhancement of the learning experience.

Assignment Participants are required to submit the assignments by email to [email protected] on the deadline as assigned by faculty. The deadline of assignments is 2:45 p.m. on the first Friday of the following module.

Notification of Grades Once received from the faculty, grade reports will be compiled and distributed through the participant pigeonholes in the Executive MBA Resources Room. We ask that participants do not call to check their grades. If a participant has not passed a course, the participant will be alerted by the Program Office prior to his/her return to class.

Global Elective Program

Participants are required to take at least one global elective (two courses) at Kellogg or other Kellogg partner schools. This leverages a worldwide network by allowing students to study unique courses in a wide variety of specialist subjects with classmates from top business schools in the Kellogg family. These classes count toward the KH EMBA joint degree and are offered as electives. These offerings also allow you more flexibility in your schedule for second year classes. The schools include: Kellogg's Evanston campus Kellogg’s own Latin American EMBA program in Miami Guanghua School of Management, Peking University Leon Recanati Graduate School of Business

Administration at Tel Aviv University, Israel Schulich School of Business at York University in

Toronto, Canada WHU-Otto Beisheim Graduate School of Management

in Vallendar, Germany Guidelines on the global electives: 1. Each KH student is required to participate in one global

elective (two courses). 2. Accommodation will be provided for the night before

and the night inclusive of class days. Rooms are non-transferable and dates cannot be changed.

Page 19: KH19 Student Handbook - HKUST Business School · HANDBOOK FOR KELLOGG-HKUST EXECUTIVE MBA PROGRAM ... Deputy Program Director Eva Wong Tel: (852) 2358 2203 Email: eva.wong…

3. A bidding exercise will be run in May for selection of the elective. Details will be provided.

4. The KH program office will cover the program

expenses (tuition fee, accommodation, course materials and F&B on campus).

5. The KH program office will not cover air-ticket, travel

insurance, local transportation, meals off campus and extra curricular events.

6. Preferences on a second elective will be accommodated on a seat availability basis, and will be at your own cost.

7. Students must be in positive academic standing and gain approval from the program for all elective requests. For example, a student who has accumulated 4 LPs would not get approval to go for a second elective.
