High 5 Netball Tournament
“Pass, Eva!” shouted Eleanor.
On Monday 13th March 2017 Danbury Park Netball team competed in a High Five Netball Tournament at Great
Baddow High School. Overall there were 22 teams split into four pools; we were in pool two. The first team
we played against was St Johns B and we won 4-1. Following our victory we felt very confident and ready for
the next game. Another win for Danbury Park against Tyrrells B 2-1. With two matches won our confidence
level grew higher and higher 4-0 “yes!” Another win for Danbury Park. Onto our final match we felt the
pressure as Miss Bridge explained that if we won this match we could win our pool. With the parents cheering
on the side lines we knew we could do it. Another 4-0 win, well done Danbury Park we did it. With all the
matches played anticipation awaited us as we were waiting for our scores. The results were read out…….Yes
we did it we came first out of our pool!!
We are now looking forward to the finals in May. Thank you to the parents for transporting and cheering us
on with Miss Bridge.

Well done to our great team! .
Class Dove Book Week
As you know parents, two weeks ago the school had a book week. This is all about what Class Dove have
been up to during Book Week…
Firstly, we found out what book we were reading, which was The Terrible Thing That Happened To
Barnaby Brocket. As soon as we found this out we got down to business, reading our books. We knew that
Barnaby Brocket was our protagonist.
As we began deciphering the first few pages, we explored characters and filled their character profiles.
We gradually read some of the story, filling maps and drawing pictures along the way. Barnaby’s family
members are: Eleanor, Alistair, Henry, Melanie and of course Barnaby and their delightful dog Captain
W.E. Johns.
As well as class work we also thoroughly enjoyed doing whole school activities. On Tuesday we read with
Class Flamingo. We shared books with them as if we were a reading partner in year six! On Thursday we
dressed up as a book character and there was an awful lot of People from the Harry Potter series. There
was also quite a lot of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonkas around the school.
On World Book Day Miss Johnston organised a grand competition for everybody in the school. She hid
sixteen pictures of where’s Wally? Around the school. Our class winner was Jessica M with all 16!
Thank you for reading about Class Dove’s Book Week.

Class Cuckoo Book Week Report
This week was a very special week called book week. It was fun, educational and filled with lots of cakes! In
Class Cuckoo we were looking at an author; he was called Ted Hughes. He wrote a vast selection of children’s
animal books and poems.
We even had a try at writing our own creation tales. Creation tales are short, snappy stories that tell the
reader how an animal was created (not actually, of course!) To start us off, Mrs Marsland read us a Ted
Hughes creation tale, called How the Tortoise Became, which gave us an idea of the writing style and the
standard of work she was expecting.
In the ICT suite we researched Ted Hughes and typed up a biography on him. We had to write in the third
person and try and use the passive voice. Mrs Marsland challenged us to include a quote. I used something
Hughes once said about writing, “...imagine what you are writing about. See it and live it.”
We also read to the year one and two children in Class Goldfinch as reading partners. My partner was Max.
We read “Explorers”. I found out that Max persevered reading tricky words and is good at reading. It really
surprised me.
On Wednesday parents, grandparents and carers were invited into school to share reading with us.
And then there were the cakes. On Thursday, the whole school lined up to buy a small cake. It was extremely
hard to choose one! Also, on Thursday, we had a special lunch. It consisted of a rat-burger (chicken burger),
and cake that was decorated with sweet teeth.
We then made our own fabric prints of our animals we chose to write about in our creation tale. Mine was a
Snowy Owl that had golden eyes. I sewed golden and silver thread around them for a shiny effect.
We also made 3d paper mache models of our animals. We used a technique called pebbling, which involved a lot
of paper!
We then used coloured tissue paper to add colour. I got a feathery effect from tearing thin strips of white
tissue paper and for the darker feathers, I used thin strips of black tissue paper.
On Friday, we read a book with a teacher; I chose Mrs Marsland as she was reading “A Midsummer Night’s
dream”. We acted it out in a very humorous way. It was one of my favourite activities of book week.
Altogether, I think that book week was extremely successful and lots of fun! I have learnt a lot and best of
all, had a great time! Report by Ben C.
To read Ben’s full report and to see class photographs please see class Cuckoo’s class page on our school website
Class Dove and Eider Author Visit
On Tuesday we Class Dove and Class Eider had two
really exciting visitors. Because we were reading
Swapna Haddow’s book, Dave Pigeon, during book
week, the author and illustrator came into school.
Swapna was excellent; she used to live in London.
She brought with her a Dave Pigeon teddy pigeon.
She also had miniature characters of Dave and
Skipper.
She helped us write our very own Dave Pigeon story
whilst Sheena Dempsy, her illustrator, drew it.
The highlight of the day was when we got our books
signed by the exact author and illustrator.
For me the best bit was when we drew our own evil
characters. Emma
I enjoyed working with Chloe to create Mr and Mrs
Nugget. Ella.
I liked it when Swapna commented on what an evil
character I had drawn. Joe

Class Jay Assembly
Well done to all the children in Class Jay who concluded our series of class assemblies last Friday. They confidently stood up in front of the whole school and their families to share their learning about their topic, Night and Day. They have been so busy and covered so many areas of the curriculum but we particularly liked the wishes they would make with their magic wands and their Maths games, as well as the film of their PE lesson.
Danbury Park Competes in English Competition As you already know, English is an essential section of our education. So, on Monday 13th March 2017, four of
us took this to a new level by taking part in an English competition against 150 schools across Essex.
When we first arrived at the gates, we were astounded by the competition that we had on our hands. Our
first round was based upon root words. We had three root words- love, dry and fun- and we had to make as
many words as we could using suffixes and prefixes, whilst including the root word still. We did quite well at
this, finding lots of words involving love, but not too many with fun.
Our next round was the noun swap, where we had a page of writing with some words missed out. We had to
fill in the gaps with words given to us in a list but there were a few too many for our liking!
After this, we had a bonus round because the competition was too tight. We had to find words to do with
‘snow’. This task was our least favourite because we struggled to understand what we were meant to do and
therefore we only ended up with one unique word.
Luckily, we then had a break (which we thoroughly enjoyed because we had one absolutely scrumptious cookie
with smarties inside it) were we talked to our hearts’ content. Annoyingly, the adults were allowed as many
biscuits as they wanted whilst we could only have one!
There was time for one more round - spelling. This time, the test was individual. We saw three words on the
board, but only one was spelt correctly. We had 5 seconds to quickly write down the correct answer before a
new word materialized.
Afterwards we felt incredibly proud of ourselves, even though we only came 7th out of the 10 schools who
were there on that day. It had been a great day and we all loved it.

Maths Competition On Monday 13th March, four year 6s went to a maths competition at New Hall School. As we entered the
room we were filled with buzzing excitement. We chose a seat at the back of the room so that nobody could
hear our discussions during the competition.
When we were introduced to our first task, we were amazed how long it would take us to complete the sorting
diagram. To do this we split into two groups doing one sheet per group. Although we did not do as well as we
thought we would, we all knew that we had done our best. After the next task we had a break and were given
cookies with smarties inside. We all found this very amusing as we considered ourselves to be ‘smarties’.
After the next exercise we finally found the one that we enjoyed. We had to find the price of a trip to Harry
Potter World. On this we got full marks!
Next, it was the time for the results. Although we did not get as much as we thought we would we came 7th.
Despite this we all knew that we did our best and we all enjoyed the experience.
By Katie, Christopher, Woody and Preet.
As in previous years the school would like to support Red Nose Day on Friday 24th March 2017. Year 6 children will be visiting classrooms with red noses for sale for £1 during the next two weeks. If you would like your child to support this worthy cause please give them a donation to purchase a red nose. The noses will also be available to purchase in the school reception area. On Red Nose Day we would ask that children wear a red nose to show support for the cause, either by wearing the official merchandise, making their own red noses (perhaps a section from an egg box, paint and elastic) or just painting their own nose. The school will not be requesting any further donations to support the cause other than the purchase of noses.
We are taking part in the Shop for Schools Scheme at the Meadow Shopping Centre again this year.
