SECTION 4THEORY OF OPERATION

4.1 INTRODUCTION

The KFS 576A is the cockpit-mounted Control Unit for the KXP 756 Transponder. Itperforms three main functions. First, that of converting switch inputs and information fromthe optional encoding altimeter into a serial data format and sending it to the transponder.Second, displaying the selected transponder code and mode of the transponder for thepilot via the gas-discharge display. Third, communicating status with an external unit viathe 429 bus.

4.2 GENERAL CIRCUIT THEORY

4.2.1 CONTROL UNIT INPUTS

The Control Unit signal inputs consist of the External Ident, Mode A/Mode B select, tenaltitude (Mode C) inputs, 1/2 select, Master/Slave select, Emergency, Control Disable,External Standby and Reply input from the transponder.

The External Ident input permits a remotely mounted switch to perform the same functionas the Ident Button on the Control Unit. The Mode A/Mode B select input changes a bitin the serial data informing the transponder whether to reply to Mode A or Mode Binterrogations. The altitude inputs are provided by an encoding altimeter. These inputsare serialized and transmitted to the transponder.

The 1/2 select input determines the unit designation in a dual unit system. When the unitis designated a Master it initiates communications on the 429 bus. When it is a Slave itresponds to interrogation on the 429 bus. When the Emergency input is active the codeis replaced by 7700 when the cursor switch is held in for over 3 seconds. ActivatingControl Disable disables all the switch functions except the VFR Code recall. When theExternal Standby input is active the unit keeps the transponder in Standby mode.

When the transponder is replying, it sends a signal to the Control Unit causing an “R” tobe illuminated on the display.

4.2.2 FUNCTION SWITCH

The switch is continuously rotatable in both directions and is used to select the desiredmode of operation of the transponder. Nomenclature on the display indicates the positionof the Function Switch.

KFS 576A

4.2.3 CODE SELECTOR SWITCH

This switch is continuously rotatable in both directions and is used to change thetransponder reply code. Momentarily depressing the switch knob changes the position ofthe cursor. The cursor points to the digit that will change when the Code Selector Switchis rotated. The cursor moves from left to right only.

If the Code Selector Switch is held in continuously for approximately 3 seconds, thetransponder code will change to the VFR code and the cursor will return to the leftmostposition.

4.2.4 IDENT SWITCH

Pressing the Ident Switch results in an ident pulse being sent to the transponder via theserial data line. This causes the transponder to transmit the SPI (Special PositionIdentification) pulse for approximately 23 seconds. The IDT nomenclature on the display, lights for approximately 23 seconds to indicate the transmission to the SPI pulse. Thesame action results when the External Ident input is activated.

4.2.5 OPERATING VOLTAGES

All operating voltages, -26, +9.3 and +190V for the KFS 576A are externally supplied bythe KXP 756 transponder. The +9.3V input is used to generate the +5V source by meansof an I.C. regulator. The +190V is used to drive the gas discharge display. The -26V isregulated to -10V for the 429 circuitry.

The KFS 576A is supplied in either a +5V or +28V bezel lighting version.

4.2.6 EEPROM

An indicator without mechanical code selector switches is unable to “remember” itsselected code when power is removed. To provide this feature an EEPROM is used. TheElectrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) “remembers” thetransponder code when power is removed from the Control Unit. The code isautomatically recalled from the EEPROM when power is applied to the Control Unit.

4.2.7 MULTIPLEX AND DISPLAY CIRCUITRY

The KFS 576A uses a multiplexed gas-discharge display. The anodes of the display areenergized sequentially. The data to be displayed on the cathodes is outputtedsynchronously with the clocking of the anodes. Each anode is energized forapproximately 1 out of every 8msec.

A photodetector activates the automatic dimming circuit and is used to adjust the display brightness in response to variations in ambient light levels.

KFS 576A

4.2.8 CLOCK, STROBE AND SERIAL DATA OUTPUTS

As previously stated, all information inputted to the Control Unit is sent to the transponderin a serial data format. The Serial Data output contains all the information needed by thetransponder to reply properly to an interrogation. The Strobe output indicates to thetransponder the end of a valid sequence of serial data. The clock occurs only after aparticular bit of data has stabilized on the Serial Data output causing the transponder toaccept that particular bit of data.

4.2.9 TRANSPONDER SELECT SWITCH

A Transponder Select Switch is installed on some versions of the KFS 576A and permitsa single Control Unit to select one of two remote mounted transponders. This switch doesnot affect the operation of the indicator in any way other than determining whichtransponder is operational.

4.2.10 429 BUS

The 429 Bus is used to communicate Control Unit status with external units.

4.3 DETAILED CIRCUIT THEORY

The following is a detailed description of the KFS 576A circuit operation. The referencedschematics and timing diagrams should be used as an aid in understanding the theory.

The following table lists component designators and the schematics on which they arefound:

Component Designations Schematic

101-199 I/O Board201-299 Processor Board301-399 Driver Board401-499 Switch Board

4.3.1 POWER SUPPLY

All operating voltages for the KFS 576A are externally provided (by the KXP 756Transponder).

4.3.1.2 HIGH VOLTAGE CURRENT LIMITER

Q303 limits the current drawn from the +190 volt line to approximately 25mA. Thisprovides protection for the anode and cathode drivers (I301, I302 and I303) and the gasdischarge display in the event of a momentary short inside the display.

4.3.2 MICROPROCESSORS

I202 and I203 are 8-bit, single chip microprocessors that control most of the operations inthe Control Unit. A detailed description of the internal operation of the microprocessors ortheir interaction is not required for maintenance and is beyond the scope of this manual.Proper microprocessor operation is best determined by inputting of specific informationand checking to see that the proper output is present.

4.3.2.1 ALTITUDE INPUTS

Ten input lines from an encoding altimeter supply altitude information to the Control Unit. This data is then serialized and outputted to the transponder. The ten lines are multiplexedby I101 and I102. The multiplexed output from I101 and I102 is sent to microprocessorI202 pin 39 via J102 pin 16.

4.3.2.2 REPLY INPUT

When the transponder replies to an interrogation, it sends a signal to the KFS 576A. Asthis signal falls below 2.5 volts it caused pin 1 of I204 to go low, which pulls pin 1 of I203low. I203 subsequently causes the "R" nomenclature on the gas discharge to lightindicating a transponder reply. A time delay in I203 causes the "R" to remain lit for about250 msec after the Reply input returns to the high state.

4.3.2.3 CLOCK, STROBE AND SERIAL DATA

Figure 4-2 Waveform and Timing Diagram shows typical clock, strobe and serial datawaveforms. The clock and strobe lines are used by the transponder to decode the serialdata information.

Serial data is outputted from board 1 via board 2 to J5761-23. This data consists of 32continuously repeating bits of information, each bit approximately 1 msec wide. The levelof a particular bit, either high or low, represents some bit of information that must be sentfrom the KFS 576A to the transponder.

For example,if the IDENT switch is pushed, the IDENT bit of serial data is low. Conversely, if the IDENTswitch is not being pushed, the IDENT bit in the serial data is high. Figure 4-3 Serial Datashows the serial data and the information associated with each bit.

Page 15: KFS-576A Maintenance Manual

KFS 576A

Refer again to Figure 4-2 Waveform and Timing Diagram and notice the time relationshipbetween the clock, strobe and serial data signals. The clock signal occurs only after thedata bit has stabilized at which time the clock goes high. The data bit level during the risingedge determines what value of data will be "seen" by the transponder. After 32 bits ofserial data have been transmitted, the strobe occurs which indicates the end of a 32 bitsegment of data and the beginning of a new 32 bit segment.

Q201, Q202, and Q203 invert and level shift the DATA STROBE, CLOCK BUS, andDATA BUS lines from I203 respectively. The output from Q201 is P201 pin 6, Q202 isP201 pin 13, and Q203 is P202 pin 19.

4.3.2.4 MODE A/B SELECT

Grounding pin 9 of J5761 causes the A/B bit of the serial data to go low. This results inthe transponder replying only to Mode B and Mode C interrogations. When pin 9 of J5761is open to the A/B bit is high and the transponder replies only to Mode A and Mode Cinterrogations. Without a transponder, this bit can be checked by observing the serial datawhile pin 9 of J5761 is grounded and opened.

4.3.2.5 429 BUS

When 429 data is received on J5762-1 and 2 it is buffered by I103A. The output of I103Ais level shifted by R141 and R213. If the signal level is greater than 7.6 volts I206B pullsTP207 low interrupting the microprocessor I202. If the signal level is less than 3 voltsI207A pulls TP207 low. When TP207 goes low TP208 reflects the state of the 429 data bitreceived so the microprocessor can read it on I202-1.

When the microprocessor I202 transmits data on the 429 bus it first turns on the 429 busdrivers by pulling I202-38 low. The 429 bus drivers are composed of Q107 thru Q110 andassociated components which supply +5, -10, and +9.3 volts to drive the 429 data buscomponents. Data is outputted on I202-33, 34. These two data lines are inverted by Q105and Q106. These two signals are differentially amplified by I104A and I105A. The outputof I105A is the inverse of I104A.

When I202-33 and 34 are both high, J5762-1 and 2 are both 0 volts. When I202-33 is highand I202-34 is low J5762-1 is -5 volts and J5762-2 is +5 volts. When I202-33 is low andI202-34 is high J5762-1 is +5 volts and J5762-2 is -5 volts.

When the microprocessor is finished transmitting a 32 bit word it turns off the 429 busdrivers by pulling I202-38 high.

4.3.2.6 EEPROM

I201 is an Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM). Datastored in memory I201 can only be erased electrically and remains stored even whenpower is removed. I201 has a RAM space that is bit for bit mapped over the EEPROM.Pin 11 controls reading and writing to the device RAM. Pin 9 of the EEPROM is the storeline. When I201-9 goes low the contents of the RAM are stored in EEPROM. When poweris applied to the control unit R212 and C201 hold I201-10 low for a short time after the 5volt line is valid. This results in a power on recall from EEPROM to RAM of the last codethat was programmed so the microprocessor can read it.

To prevent the EEPROM from being needlessly updated, the microprocessors waitapproximately 3 seconds after a digit has changed and if another digit does not changewithin that time, it updates the EEPROM with the new code.

4.3.2.7 MICROPROCESSOR RESET

Pin 4 of both I202 and I203 are the reset inputs for the microprocessors and are usedwhen power to I202 and I203 are interrupted. Pin 4 of I202 and I203 are held at +5V duringnormal operation. When a power interruption occurs, I202-4 and I203-4 must be broughtto ground before power is reapplied. Pin 4 must then slowly rise to +5V. I204B senses adrop in the 9.3 volt supply and pulls pin 4 of I202 and I203 low. When power is reapplied,I204B pulls I202-4 and I203-4 low and then allows them to slowly rise to +5 volts throughan external capacitor C208.

4.3.2.8 SWITCH INPUTS

Pins 21, 22, 23 and 24 of I203 are the inputs to the microprocessor from the Functionselector, Code selector, Ident, and Cursor switch. The DATA SEL and DATA SEL signalsare complements of each other. Only one of the two signals can be low at a time. Thisenables the use of only four pins of I203 to input eight different sources of informationthrough a multiplexing scheme. The Code selector switch is connected to E401 DATASEL and the Function Switch to E402 DATA SEL. I203 alternately changes pin 17 fromlow, to check the status of the FUNCTION and IDENT SWITCH to high, to check thestatus of the CODE and CURSOR switches. The status of each switch is read by settingthe appropriate DATA SEL line to low and checking the status of pins 21, 22, 23, and 24.I203 Pins 21 thru 23 are connected to the FUNCTION/CODE switches and I203 Pin 24 isthe IDENT/CURSOR line. I203 interprets a low input to pin 21, 22, 23, or 24 during thetime DATA SEL is low as an input from the Function and Ident Switches. A low on pins21, 22, 23 or 24 of I203 during the time DATA SEL is low will be interpreted as an inputfrom the Code Selector and Cursor Switches.

4.3.3 DISPLAY CIRCUITRY

The KFS 576A display circuitry consists of a gas discharge display and associatedmultiplexing and driving circuitry. This circuit sequentially fires the eight anodes andenergizes the proper cathodes. Refer to Figure 4-4 Display Timing Diagram for displaytiming information. In addition, a programming current proportional to the ambient lightlevel is supplied to the cathode drivers to provide automatic dimming of the gas dischargedisplay.

To insure proper display functioning under all ambient light and temperature conditions, two keep-alive anodes inside the gas discharge display (DS103) are continuously ionized. The keep-alive anodes connect to +190 volts through R401 and R402 and the keep-alivecathodes connect to ground through R323 and R324.

4.3.3.1 ANODE AND CATHODE DRIVERS

The gas discharge display consists of 8 anodes and 13 cathode buses. Four of theanodes are associated with the 7-segment digits and their cursors. The remaining fouranodes are used with the nomenclature.

Each cathode bus is connected to the particular segment of a digit, a cursor, or one letterin the nomenclature. The corresponding segments of each digit are wired together to formthe "a", "b", "c", "d", "e", "f" and "g" buses. For example, the "a" cathode bus (pin 11 ofDS103) is connected to the top segment of all four digits. All of the cursors are wiredtogether to form the "h" cathode bus. Cathode buses "i”, "j", "k", "l" and "m" are associatedwith letters in the nomenclature and they are formed in a similar manner.

There is approximately +100 volts on the anodes of the display when they are not beingfired, while the cathodes are approximately +70 volts. This +30 volt differential is notenough to ionize the gas and illuminate a display cathode segment. The correspondinganode must be pulled high (about +190 volts) by I302 and the cathode must be pulled low(about +15 volts) by I301 or I303. Once the segment is ionized the cathode voltageincreases to about +35 volts and the resulting +155 volts between the anode and cathodeis sufficient to sustain the ionization and illuminate a cathode segment.

The anodes of the display are driven by I302 and fired sequentially in the following order:2, 8, 3, 6, 4, 1, 5, 7. A high on an input of I302 raises the corresponding output from about+100 volts to about +190 volts. Anode driver I302 is driven by I304, an eight bit Johnson(ring) counter.

Page 18: KFS-576A Maintenance Manual

KFS 576A

Only one output of I304 is high at a time which results in only one anode being energizedat a time. An output of I304 goes high on the rising edge of the clock bus line and remainshigh until the next rising edge at which time the next anode in the sequence is energized. The anode voltage, which is applied to I302-10, is turned on and off with the cathode byQ304 and Q305. As a result, if a segment is to be energized, the anode and cathodevoltages are switched on and off together. Like the cathode voltage, the amount of timethe anode voltage remains is dependent on the ambient light level.

A Multiplex SYNC signal, P301-6, synchronizes the output of I304 with the data presenton the cathode buses. This signal forces anode #2 to go high in the event I304 is falselytriggered and anode #2 is not already high, thus keeping the anode synchronous with thecathode data.

The cathode firing sequence is such that a cathode associated with a digit is energizedfollowed by an anode associated with a nomenclature in a continuous manner. I303 drivesthe nomenclature cathode buses while I301 drives the digit cathode buses. A high on theinput of I303 pulls the corresponding output from about +70 volts to about +10 volts. Thiswill cause ionization of the gas if the associated anode is energized at the same time. Some inputs and outputs of I303 are paralleled to provide increased driving current for thelarger cathode segments in the nomenclature.

I301 functions similar to I303 except that it contains a BCD to 7-segment decoder. InputsD1, D2, D3, D4 and D8 contain bits 1, 2, 4 and 8 of the Binary Coded Decimal digit that isto be displayed. The decoder determines which cathode buses should be pulled low todisplay the digit. For example, if the digit "3" (binary 0011) is to be displayed as theleftmost digit, pins 4 and 5 of I301 are low while pins 2 and 3 of I301 are high. The decoderinterprets this input as a three and pulls cathodes "a", "b", "c", "d" and "g" low. If anode #2is energized a three will illuminate as the leftmost digit.

The cursors in the display are energized by a low on I301-10 which pulls the "h" cathodebus low. Note that this input is different from all the others since a low signal pulls thecathode bus low. Q304 and Q305 form a voltage divider that supplies approximately +95volts to the driving circuitry.

4.3.3.2 AUTOMATIC DIMMING

The brightness of the gas discharge changes in response to varying ambient light assensed by photodetector V401. Dimming is accomplished by varying both the duty cycleand the amplitude of the cathode driving current.

A square wave present at TP302 varies its duty cycle as a function of ambient light. Thisis accomplished by means of a one-shot (I305), a constant current source (I306B) and aphotodetector (V401). The current output of I306B decreases as the increasing ambientlight level lowers the resistance of V401. This variable current varies the rate of charge ofC308. The time constant of I305 is determined by the rate of charge of this capacitor. Theminimum time constant is approximately 80 usec and can be adjusted by R327.

Page 19: KFS-576A Maintenance Manual

KFS 576A

As ambient light increases the pulse width at TP302 continues to increase. This pulsebegins when the clock bus line on I305-2 and 4 goes high and triggers the one-shot andends at the time determined by the rate of charge of C308. The maximum pulse width canbe no longer than the time between the rising and falling edge of the clock bus line, approximately 1msec. This is because a low on I305-2 and 4 forces I305 to reset causingthe output of I305 pin 3 change from high to low.

The output of I305 is filtered by R314 and C301 to form a DC voltage proportional to theduty cycle of the square wave. This DC voltage is applied to I306A which is used as avoltage-to-current converter. The output of I306A is a current that is proportional to thevoltage on C301. CR302 shunts this current to ground when the signal at TP302 is lowresulting in a cathode driving current that varies in amplitude and duty cycle. R310 limitsthis current to the value required by cathode drivers I301 and I306.

Each output of I301 and I303 acts as a constant current source. This source current isproportional to the current applied to pin 1 of I301 and I303. Since the programmingcurrent at pin 1 of the I.C.'s varies in amplitude and duration the cathode current is alsovaried and the brightness of the gas discharge display changes in response to ambientlight level.

A line from I203 microprocessor pin 17 is outputted to I205A inverter which is sent to P301pin 7 “DIM 1” and I205A which inverts the signal and outputs it to P301 pin 11 “DIM 2”.DIM 2 is the inverse of the DIM 1. DIM 1 switches Q301 on allowing I301 to source currentwhile DIM 2 switches Q302 off so I303 cannot source current. On the next falling edge ofDATA SEL line I203 pin 17 the signals are inverted and I303 sources current and I301does not.

5.2.2 DESCRIPTION OF KFS 576A TEST PROGRAM

Testing of the KFS 576A requires the ability to receive and display the King serial datamessages which are used to set up the mode of the KXP 756 transponder. It is alsonecessary to send a selected, as well as display a received, ARINC 429 serial datamessage. The ARINC 429 serial data message is used to communicate between masterand slave KFS 576A’s in a tandem installation or a KFS 576A and a KNS 660 system forfrequency management.

The KCT 110 computer test system used in conjunction with an Apple or Apple equivalentcomputer system, as described in section 5.2.1. will provide all of the necessary serialinterface and control function interface to the KFS 576A . The KCT 110 consists of two PCboards which will be inserted in the appropriate card slots of the computer. The KCA 110interface box contains break out of necessary test points, four cables which connect theKFS 576A and the KCA 110 interface box to the computer, and a floppy disk containingthe test program. The KCA 110 will supply power to the control unit.

The KFS 576A test program is set up to follow the test procedures and test data sheet insection 5.2.4. of this manual. The test program will ask for the specific part number of thecontrol unit to be tested, so that a menu of tests can be displayed on the screen. Once themenu is displayed you may choose to step through in sequence, filling out a test datasheet and completing a final test data sheet, or go directly to a specific test in an attemptto verify a complaint or performance of a unit function. The last step on the menu, unitstatus, is not part of the final test procedure. The unit status portion of the programdisplays all functions except auto dim override and ARINC 429. The unit status will bevaluable for trouble-shooting the commonly used functions of a KFS 576A.
