Workshop #1 Options—10:35 a.m. Choose one of the following: 1. Effective Church Websites, Rev. Jacqueline Spycher, Media & Marketing Coordinator

In an age of technology and communication, how does your church keep up with sharing their mission and identity? We’ll look at best practices for effective church websites, as well as the basics of creating and maintaining a site. People of all skill and knowledge levels will leave with helpful ideas and strategies.

2. What Does Hands-on Mission Do for You?, Elder Tom Neal, Chair, Hands-on Mission Work Group

Members of the Hands-on Mission Work Group will share the group’s vision, mission, and focus. Participants will learn how their church can get involved in mission-oriented projects in their own community, as well as learn how they can participate in Presby-tery-wide projects as individuals or a congregation. Each participant will receive a 2019 Church Mission Directory.

3. Your Kitchen Isn’t Like Home, Elder Diane Agnew, Hunger Action Coordinator and Elder Reshawn Whetstone,

Proprietor, The Spirit Café Many churches lack the adequate training and knowledge for operating a kitchen shared by multiple groups. In this workshop, we will discuss how the needs of church kitchens differ from what we may do at home, what an inspection by the health department covers, and steps every church can do to improve food safety requirements. An overview of proper food handling and storage will be provided with additional resources for training.

4. Welcoming Your Neighbors, Welcome Diversity, Rev. Lindsay Anderson, Chair, Multicultural Ministry Work Group What do our churches mean when they talk about diversity? We will share wisdom, practices, and resources with our sisters and

brothers from across the presbytery. Participants will leave the workshop with a deeper understanding of what their congregation sees as diversity and what they can do to welcome diverse people.

5. Who You Gonna Call?/Presbytery Services, Rev. Dr. John Judson, Chair, Coordinating Cabinet and

Rev. Dr. Al Timm, Executive Presbyter The Presbytery is here to assist congregations. Come and learn what resources are available for church leaders. Workshop partici-pants will develop familiarity with the Presbytery and will learn where to find help for specific church needs. Participants will be given a booklet of resources available through the Presbytery of Detroit.

6. Deacons: More than Coffee and Communion, Elder Carol Marks, Director of Pastoral Ministries, Grosse Point Memorial

How do we build fellowship within our deacon boards or other small groups? Bring your ideas and share with us during this open exchange. As we build community and fellowship among our groups/councils/boards, we can lean on each other. Servant leaders give so much of themselves to others in the congregation, we need to care for each other. Come and learn how to build communi-ty within councils and other small groups within the congregation.

7. Staying in Your Lane—Members, Officers, Pastors, Elder Bill Ball, Board Chair, Presbyterian Villages of Michigan

This workshop will focus on how to approach governance in the Presbyterian tradition in order to achieve the vision and mission of your congregation. It will be highly interactive allowing participants to share their successes, concerns, and dilemmas. Participants will develop familiarity with the Book of Order for its application to governance of the church.

8. Steps Toward a Safer Worship Space, Tom Bustance, member, Kirk in the Hills

We all want our congregations to feel at home and safe within our churches. Come learn about practices and steps that keep plac-es of worship safe and secure without scaring worshipers. Tips and skills will be provided that benefit churches of all sizes.

9. Child Safety: How to Not End Up on the Evening News, CRE Charon Barconey, Associate Executive Presbyter

This workshop will provide participants with a clear understanding of the Presbytery of Detroit’s Child Protection Policy, review of a local church policy, and discuss why both are integral to a successful youth ministry in the life of the church. Participants will have information on how to keep youth safe, as well as protecting the church and the adults who work with youth.

Workshop #2 Options—11:35 a.m. Choose one of the following: 10. Reaching People Through Social Media, Rev. Jacqueline Spycher, Media & Marketing Coordinator

People are connected and communicating in new ways. Is your church part of the conversation? Do you regularly tweet, add to your story, or have a constantly updating newsfeed? Do you have any idea what those things mean? Join this interactive session as we discuss and share ideas of how to utilize social media with the church. Newbies to pros are welcome as we look at expanding your church’s presence online.

11. Top Ten Things Ruling Elders Can Do Under the Books of Order, Rev. Ed Koster, J.D., Stated Clerk

Who has the authority to do things in the church? Come learn about the Book of Order as we look at the specific powers and authority of the pastor, session, and other leaders of the church. Participants will leave the workshop with a better understanding of how the polity of the church allocates duties, authorities, and powers, and how best to use them for a more effective ministry and mission.

12. Big Bang for Small Bucks: Mission Projects in the Community, Elder Tom Neal, Chair, Hands-on Mission Work Group

Through the Faith in Action Work Group, congregations were recently asked how they would engage in hands on mission if given $1000; the presbytery then distributed 30 mini grants to churches. Come hear from four recipients of these mini grants as they detail how they were able to impact their communities. Workshop participants will be inspired and will learn how to implement a mission project tailored for their community.

13. The Plaster is Falling: Maintaining Older Buildings, Elder Howard Riley, Building and Grounds Chair, Jefferson Ave.

Hear real life examples of major projects in an older church, as well as discussion around ways to approach maintenance of any church. Topics discussed will include: project timing, budgets, anticipating facility needs, and emergency maintenance. Participants will learn factors to consider when managing facilities, especially when facing major, and/or unexpected maintenance needs and how to best manage these budgets and projects.

14. Engaging and Retaining New Members, Rev. Dr. Nate Phillips, Pastor, Kirk in the Hills

In this workshop, attendees will learn about the power of small group ministry to engage newcomers and to help them build relationships within the church. Once relationships are established, people are more inclined to stick around because they have a sense of belonging and a feeling of community. Participants will leave the workshop with an easy to use, effective mod-el for small group ministries which will facilitate engagement and relationship building for newcomers to the church.

15. Gardens and the Gospel, Elder Sharon Oglesby, Chair, Self-Development of People Work Group and Elder Lisa Turner, Member,

Committee on the Preparation for Ministry Hear from two very different congregations as to how they use their gardens for mission, building up community, and sharing Christ’s love with others. The presenters will talk about their gardens, share photos, and tell about the ups and downs of their work. The aim is to encourage other congregations to consider their context and how a garden may be used in a new or expanded way.

16. Uncomfortable Conversations: Social Issues, Rev. Dr. Peter Henry, Member, Operations Ministry Team

Will they know us by our love? This workshop will be an opportunity for participants to consider issues related to the discussion of social issues in the context of the church. We will examine biblical and theological resources for these uncomfortable conversations, as well as consider the dynamics at play in talking about matters such as immigration, government, political leaders, and more.

17. Committee Leadership: Getting Things Done, Elder Greg Kateff, CPA/PFS

Successful committees start with planning not only for the specific tasks, but also in alignment with your church’s mission statement and with direction from Session. This workshop explores the various things committee leaders should do, in order to get things done. We’ll talk about committee member selection, committee retreats, meeting preparation, moderating meetings, and communication. This workshop will benefit both the new or experienced committee leader.

18. Inviting the Lost into the Church, Rev. Dr. Bill Davis, Stated Supply Pastor, Lakeshore

What is the motivation for marketing your church? Come discuss how to better serve and share Christ through a marketing plan for the church. Topics discussed will include costs, timing, message, and preparation. Participants will learn about the value of marketing, and will take away a model for thinking about their specific church and for developing an effective marketing plan.
