It’s springtime in Charleston already! The streets
are bustling with visitors; the azaleas, wisteria and
dogwoods are in bloom and the CSOL® is
enthusiastically preparing for the 2018 Designer
Showhouse. Located at 142 Tradd Street, this is
the 41st edition of a very popular destination for
tourists and locals alike.
This is an incredibly busy time of the year for the
CSOL®. There are a number of projects going on
now. Several Revels events are upcoming; the Car
Sponsorship has 2½ more months to run; Sippin’
Sangria on the Stono/Paella Party is set for April
29 to benefit the David and Karen Stahl Memorial
Music Scholarship; and the Pursuit of the Podium
is now underway. All of these events are detailed
further in this edition of Keynotes.
You may not be aware: Ticket sales for CSO
performances amount to only about 45% of their
total operating budget. The other 55% comes from
donations. We, the CSOL®, contribute a sizeable
amount -- so far this year, the CSOL® has
contributed $100,000 to the CSO. They were
delighted and extremely thankful when they
received a check a few weeks ago. (See the Thank
You notes on page 3 to read their heartfelt
gratitude).
Without our projects, staffed by our hard-working,
dedicated volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to make
our contributions and our orchestra wouldn’t be
operating on a financially stable basis. Last year
(2017/2018), the CSOL® contributed a total of
$210,000 to the CSO. I’m hoping to match that
amount during the 2018/2019 season.
So, I look forward to
seeing you during the next
weeks. We have much
more to do before we
head off for our (well-
deserved) summer break. PLEASE VOLUNTEER TO

GALA AUCTIONS: SHOP ‘TIL YOU DROP
Nadine Camilla Catala
Whoever said money can’t buy happiness simply didn’t know where to go shopping. The
auctions at our Tonight, Tonight Gala on January 18 were a perfect opportunity to shop for
someone deserving ... Me. (In the spirit of generosity, the tennis lessons donated by Jane
Miller that I gave my husband upped his game.)
Back to me. I won a wardrobe styling consultation by Nadine Camilla Catala of Love Marlow. My closet is a tribute to being OCD, so I knew Nadine didn’t need to tidy up (I’d done it lots of nights at 2:00
am). Instead, Nadine devised at least 6 new outfits, recombining some oldies but goodies in unexpected and
wonderful ways. I was thrilled to fall in love all over again with my own clothes. (And, she identified two clothing gaps,
which I will immediately shop to fill. Woohoo!) Find Nadine at https://www.facebook.com/lovemarlowstyling.
Did you buy an auction item and are willing to share your experience? Email [email protected] with
your story. (We all hope the Five Bourbons winner comes forward!) By Jodie-Beth Galos

On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank the CSOL® for its very generous contribution to the CSO, announced at
the Board meeting last week. The funds that your organization provide annually to the Symphony have been
instrumental to its success and continued progress. And, all of us understand that your contribution comes only as a
result of countless hours of work by CSOL® members on projects and events throughout the year. Please know that
your efforts are both recognized and sincerely appreciated. Thank you again for your continued support.
Best regards,
Robert Siedell, President, CSO Board
I just want to echo Robert in thanking you and the CSOL® for your generous and continued support. I enjoy every
CSOL® event that I attend and love spending time with our members. I know and appreciate the time and effort the
League leadership put in to make all of this happen. See you at the next coffee!

Notable Thank You Notes
ROUND OF APPLAUSE: VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION
Volunteers are a special breed – not everyone wants to donate their time, for even a great cause.
Round of Applause is acknowledgement by President Kitty Reid to honor CSOL® volunteers.
Faye Griffin and flowers
Faye Griffin sits by my side each Board Meeting taking copious notes and keeping me in line. But, that’s not all – Faye creates the most gorgeous floral arrangements and tablescapes for our events, is a great cook and a diligent worker for the League. There’s hardly a project that Faye doesn’t impact for the better. Although a member of the League for only a few years, she contributes so much. We’re very happy she moved to Charleston. Thank you, Faye, for all you do.
My name is Daniel Pereira and I have been playing in the Cello section of the
Charleston Symphony for the past 3 seasons. Since I live in Cleveland, Ohio, during
my visits to Charleston I always stay with a host family. Thanks to the host
program, my participation in the symphony concerts is possible. I am very
thankful to all the families that have opened their homes and welcomed me with
open arms. During my time in Charleston, not only do I get to make music with a
world class orchestra, but I also get to engage in a deeply satisfying personal
experience with my hosts, who have become close friends as well.

BRING MUSIC INTO YOUR LIFE:
HOST A VISITING MUSICIAN
When the CSO is performing a Masterworks or Pops Concert, they usually need additional musicians
beyond the core group -- out-of-town professional musicians will be hired to complete the orchestra.
When this occurs, Tom Joyce, the Personnel Manager of the CSO tries to find homes for these musicians
to stay in while in Charleston. The musicians appreciate the accommodations and that they won’t need to
pay for an expensive hotel room. Recently we received this note:
To learn more about hosting a musician, contact Tom Joyce, [email protected].
A LETTER FROM MADDY WALSH
S C H O L O R S H I P W I N N E R My college studies are progressing well. I am currently in my
Junior year at Converse College in Spartanburg, still majoring
in music therapy.
My interests have developed immensely, from learning many
forms of music to the playing of many instruments. In fact, I
am now able to entertain with 12 forms of music, from flute
to vocal to piano to ukulele and many in between! Every
Sunday evening, I sing and play at a local venue. Every
Wednesday evening, I play flute at a local church. I also
released my second album, titled Green. It’s available on
iTunes, Spotify, YouTube and more. I recorded, mixed and
mastered the album by myself.
I am unsure what exactly my
future holds at this point in
time. I remain open to my
options.
The most surprising thing
about life in college is the
independence. I make all
decisions and it’s liberating.
Thank you again for the past
scholarship. You made it
possible for me to go to the
college that I desired.
Sincerely,
Maddy Walsh

It may have been three days into Lent, but that didn’t dampen the spirit of the Mardi Gras Revelers
gathered at the American College of Building Arts on Friday, February 16th. The event, hosted by
Barbara Chapman, Faye Griffin, and Chuck and Celia Hansult, featured a tour of the late 19th century
building and demonstrations by students and instructors.
ACBA President Colby Broadwater and his staff presented an overview of the college’s history and its
mission to train artisans in the building arts. Members of the CSO Brass performed New Orleans-style
music and the cocktail reception featured food worthy of any Mardi Gras ball.
CSOL® members and their guests had a wonderful evening of food, drink, and fellowship, and they came
away with greater knowledge and appreciation of a unique educational institution in Charleston.

FOR YOUNG PEOPLE’S
CONCERT ON MARCH 9 CSOL® members are needed to usher for two
Young People’s concerts, to be performed at
Charleston Southern University in North
Charleston on March 9. 20 ushers are
needed for each concert. Ushers need to
arrive at 8:45 am for the first concert and
10:30 am for the second concert. (Or, be an
angel and usher for both!) You’ll be providing
a wonderful and memorable musical
experience for 1,200 young students. (Bet
you’ll enjoy the concert too).

DON’T THROW OUT THE
BUBBLE WRAP WITH THE BABY
Please save your bubble wrap for the DSH
Boutique. It would be a great help if it were rolled and
secured with a rubber band. We don’t need the air-
filled packaging or peanuts. Bring the bubble wrap to
the house at 142 Tradd the week of March 12th.
Thanks for helping the CSOL® save $$$$.
