The Early DaysIn 1957, Elvis purchased Grace-land, Jackie Robinson retired from baseball, and James R. Cavender opened a little burger joint called Dairy Mart in thesmall northeast Texas town of Pittsburg. After 8 years in food service, James decided to dip his toe into the entrepreneurial pool by expanding his business interests into retail.

In 1965, Cavender’s customershad just three styles of Tony Lama boots to choose fromand they were likely to hear the familiar strumming of a Buck Owens song while shopping.Today customers will still hear old classics intermingled withTexas Country. The serviceand the craftsmanship in theproduct provided are still first class and there is a whole lot more to choose from when you walk into a Cavender’s store, including hundreds of styles of cowboy boots.

A Family BusinessToday Cavender’s has become the go-to westernwear retailer with a reach spanning eight states. Forty-eight of the 69 stores have rootssecurely planted in the soil all over the Lone Star State.Cavender’s is still family owned andoperated and ledby James’ three

sons. Joe, the eldest brother, serves as President of the company, while Mike is Vice-President of Operations, andyoungest brother Clay is Vice President of Merchandising.

The Cavender’s are always first to credit their success to the dedication and loyalty of their employees. “Our employees work in a team atmosphere, like a family,” says Mike. The business model was adopted from their founder and father, whose voice still rings through

the halls of Cavender’s head-quarters in Tyler, Texas, half a century later. Their mother,Mrs. Pat, styles and stages eachstore and no store is completeuntil it receives her personal touch. She travels to each new location and often, from the topof ladders, adds the charmingfinishing touches to the signa-ture western style.

Aside from the operations of the retail giant, the family owns and operates five working ranches throughout Texas and Okla-homa, from which they gleaninspiration for their products. Those products include work wear, classic western styles, thelatest trends in ladies and men’s fashion, accessories, homedécor and of course, boots.

The First Fifty YearsJames provided an excellent model of success and work ethic for his sons to follow. In 1965, when he made the decision to follow his dream,Cavender’s was born and has thrived for 50 years thanks in

part to the love and dedication of his children. Here’s to an-other 50 years of cowboy bootskicking up dust across the great state of Texas.
