Organizing Your Work Space• Adjust your work space at the beginning of class (chair,

monitor at eye level)• Use a book to elevate body or feet if needed• Use a copy holder or stand for books/papers• Keyboard should be even with the edge of the table• Keyboard and mouse heights should be even• Keep backpacks out of the way• Keep desk clear of any unnecessary materials• Always clean up and leave work area neatly arranged

Files & Folders• A file is the basic unit of storage on a computer.• Files are stored in folders. Folders contain and

organize programs and files on the computer. These icons look like actual folders.

• A filename can have up to 255 characters ( Symbols NOT allowed /, \, <, >, *, ?, “, :, ; )

• File Extensions are three letter identifiers automatically added to the end of filenames to identify the program or application.

Types of Files• Executable File: (aka program file) a file that contains

machine language instructions for the computer. In order to run a program, your operating system must load the contents and instructions from the executable file. Examples: .exe and .com

• Data File: a file that is used to store the data with which the programs work. This type of file can contain text, pictures, and other information that a program may use.

• System File: a file that is used by the operating system for a variety of purposes.

Ergonomic Tips• Top 1/3 of monitor should

be at eye level• Elbows & knees should be

positioned at 90-110 degrees

• Sit up straight, but relaxed• Feet should be supported• Sit at least 24 inches away

from the monitor• Wrists should be in a

neutral position while typing or using the mouse

• Take frequent breaks• Avoid glare on the computer

screen

Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSI)

• Occurs when someone performs a task repeatedly causing the build up of waste products in the muscles

• The human body is not designed for long sessions of repetitive movement

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome• CTS is the entrapment of the median nerve in

the carpal tunnel. CTS occurs due to the swelling of the median nerve or the tendons of the wrist.

• CTS occurs from using the computer for hours without proper body posture and improper techniques.

• Symptoms of CTS are: pain, tingling, numbness in the thumb, index, and middle fingers, weakness and swelling in the wrist and hand.
