A Word
Hello Southwest District Key Club! Wow, it is incredible to be writing this to you as the 2013-2014 District Governor! I am honored to serve as Governor every day. I am excited for the opportunity to work alongside the District Board in leading you through this year of service. We have already set up many new systems, such as the Lieutenant Governor Evaluation Form and the Club Officer Training Videos. I encourage all members to stay active in District Affairs by reading the Bulletins, Newsletters, and visiting SWDKeyClub.org. My main goal is to see the members of Arizona, New Mexico, and El Paso to grow in service and leadership exponentially. I am in Key Club, and continue to lead in Key Club, because I have a passion for service and the growth of service. One service project, or even one simple good deed, can grow into inspiration for future service or spark the light of leadership. I love seeing smiles of service broaden and the impact of service deepen. It is truly a beautiful process to capture leadership and turn it into service; to capture service and turn it into leadership on every level. Thank you for all you do and your passion for Key club. to handle all membership and financial endeavors throughout the year, keeping records of everything the district does, as well as our amazing district board, and let me tell you, the job is never boring! But, though it may seem like it, my life isn't 100% Key Club! (Alright, 99%...) This year I am a senior at Dysart High School, my high school's yearbook Editor, a member of the National Honor Society and National Society of High School Scholars, our Friends of Rachel club, which promotes anti-bullying, and as many of you know, I am COMPLETELY full of spirit, so I help out in every way that I can at my school and pump up our spirit 24/7, from Powderpuff games to dressing up to simply cheering on our sports teams! I live by one quote, and one quote only: "The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow; do good anyway." (Kent M. Kieth) And that's basically what Key Club has taught me the last four years. We don't do good deeds because we hope that people will praise us and remember us for it; we do it because we know that we are helping someone in need, somewhere. And I am so proud and honored to not only be apart of a club that values that quote, but the be able to serve this district on board with Jenalee and Liane, and the rest of the amazing, dedicated board members. We have great plans in store for all of you, and I cannot wait to see where this year takes us!
Banna Tesfay, Secretary/Treasurer Hollah, Southwest! My name is Banna Tesfay (but you can call me Banana!) and if you didn't already know, I am the 2013-2014 Southwest District Secretary/Treasurer, as well as the Southwest Key Club Key Leader Representative! My job is basically

I LOVE sports and music! I play piano and I am on both the soccer team and swim team. As of right now, it’s soccer season and it’s going AMAZINGLY! I joined Key Club my freshman year because my sister (a sophomore) had joined and told me it was an incredible way to meet people. I had been homeschooled for two years, so when I started high school, I really didn’t know anyone. That was REALLY scary for me and I was incredibly shy. You wouldn’t think it today, but my freshman year I was reserved and not very social. However, Key Club was able to turn that around for me! Over the course of a year I was able to make some of the best relationships I have throughout all of high school. My first DCON was in Albuquerque, NM (one hour away from my home) and my sister and I both went. Since then, I haven’t missed a single DCON or ICON and have been the Student Facilitator for one Key Leader in Gallup, NM. Key Club has had such an incredible impact on my life from finding a safe haven my freshman year, to performing at ICON this July in the talent show. Key Club has helped me transform from that shy freshman who was afraid of the world, to a more outgoing person than I ever thought I would be, a person who isn’t afraid to try something new or step out of her comfort zone. I have met so many incredible people and made so many close friends I know I will keep in touch with for the rest of my life. It is absolutely fantastic to me that the world’s youth have an opportunity to serve their homes, schools and communities, while developing as young leaders and individuals. So for now, that’s all I’ll tell you, but feel free to Email me or Facebook me once you finish reading this (no, seriously), I absolutely LOVE meeting new people. And finally, THANK YOU! Hi all, my name is Eliana Otero-Bell and I am the 2013-2014 Southwest District Key Club Chair of Board Committees as well as the ELIMINATE chair! I am currently a senior at Santa Fe High school, in Santa Fe, NM. My school consists of 1,700+ students, but our Key Club is relatively small (around 30).

Chandler Prep, when I was only a freshman. I never thought that a club could mean so much to me. Key Club is my home away from home. Every Key Club member, convention, and service project has a made an impact on me. I hope to make an impact on the members this year though service projects and conventions. I love Key Club so much being part and joining was probably one of the best decisions I've made in my high school career because even though I am in high school I can still make a difference in through Key Club. every event! Also, being in key club allows me to help my community in fun and different ways. When I am not doing key club stuff I play soccer and go to the movies. Riley Jandrew, Mohave Sssss, it’s hot in here! My name is Riley Jandrew and I am a junior at Lake Havasu High School in the beautiful Lake Havasu City, Arizona. I am not only obsessed with Key Club, but I also love golf, the theater arts, old movies, sewing, interior design, and of course, sleep. I joined Key Club my
freshman year, and right when I walked into the meeting, I knew it was for me. Not only do I love the inclusiveness of Key Club, but the fun and hard-work that comes along with it. Tightening the Southwest District’s bond to the best of my ability is definitely a focus I have for this year. But one thing I want every Key Clubber to have an emphasis on is service, because all in all, that’s what we do best! Stay silly, chilies!

I am so honored to work with the six Key Clubs in this division because they are full of caring, enthusiastic individuals that enjoy helping out
their schools and communities! I am a senior this year at Silver High School! I am also involved in National Honor Society, I am a student clerk for Hidalgo Medical Services, and I am seated number one on the Varsity Tennis Team. I love my family very much, and in my spare time I enjoy going to local dances, being outdoors, and playing tennis with some locals. Emma Louis, San Pedro My name is Emma Louis. I am Lieutenant Governor for the
San Pedro Division. I love Key Club because it gives me a sense of happiness when I volunteer in the community and help others around the world. With Key Club this year, I would like to encourage people to join so that they can enjoy it just as much as I do. My goal is to recruit as many new Key Clubbers as possible.
The new Lieutenant Governor of McDowell Division is Allie Bice, a senior at Fountain Hills High School. Allie is excited about going into her senior year as a Southwest District LtG. She is driven to do good and help in the community, just as are many other inspired Key Club members.

which I earned last year when I was the 2012-2013 Mohave Lieutenant Governor. With Key Club and school taking up at least two-thirds of my time, I spend the other third with friends and family. Not only is this my third year on my school’s yearbook staff, but it is also my third year in out National Honors Society. When I’m not in school or doing a school-related activity, I like to travel, meet new people, commit random acts of kindness, and sing – country music, of course! As May approaches and times gets closer to graduation (class of 2014 – woot woot!), I want to be able to look back on Key Club, and high school in general, knowing that I have left my mark and inspired others to do something worthwhile. We all have a limited amount of time on this Earth, so why not spend it doing something you won’t regret? increasing dramatically in the U.S. and other developed countries, especially among low-income households. These families are forced to buy canned goods, fast foods, or other processed foods that appropriate their incomes. Some have not held a pure vegetable in years! And this is where the Marcos de Niza Key Club comes to the rescue… On organized Saturdays, Key club students volunteer their services at a local non-profit garden that plants, harvests, and donates their reap to food banks, the underprivileged, and cancer patients. Each group benefits from these donations; the food banks distribute organic healthy vegetables to people that have been denied their rights to fresh vegetables, cancer patients have shown enormous bodily recovery from eating organic vegetables that has contributed to their overall wellbeing, and Key Club students learn about the power of plants and how their own hard work may benefit others.
Harvest for Humanity encourages the welfare of the impoverished, cancer patients, and key clubbers (who learn about the importance of leading a vegetable strong diet). At the last Harvest for Humanity event students from a neighboring school, Corona del Sol, assisted the Marcos de Niza students in the fields. We are hoping to keep up this friendship and harvest as many vegetables as possible for years to come!
Having the opportunities to receive organic vegetables is a wellness all people deserve, at least that is how the Marcos de Niza Key Club views vegetable food distribution. In past years, studies from the Arizona Department of Health Services reported on the correlation between obesity rates, poverty, and vegetable in take. As a rule, 27.3% of adults who live below 185% of the Federal Poverty Level ate less than one vegetable per day, compared to 14.8% of adults with higher incomes. In turn, 23.5% of those who ate vegetables at least one time per day are obese compared to 30.4% of those who ate less. Obesity rates are

Eliminate
What is Eliminate?
To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than 100 million
mothers and their future babies must be immunized. This
requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation,
thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take US$110
million — and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every
member of the Kiwanis family.
With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and
UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and
neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of
nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of
women each year. The
effects of the disease are
excruciating — tiny
newborns suffer repeated,
painful convulsions and
extreme sensitivity to
light and touch.

March of Dimes
March of Dimes helps moms have full-term pregnancies and
healthy babies. If something goes wrong, we offer information
and comfort to families. We research the problems that
threaten our babies and work on preventing them.
Since March of Dimes launched the national Prematurity
Campaign, preterm birth rates have reached a 10-year low. In
2012, the drive to eliminate elective deliveries before 39
completed weeks of pregnancy with nearly 100 prominent
hospitals was put into motion. Now, comfort and support to
families with a baby in newborn intensive care is offered in
more than 128 hospitals around the country.

The HERSHEY’S Track & Field Games are the largest youth
sports program of its kind in North America, with hundreds of
thousands of children competing every year. Everyone has a
chance to be among the 480 athletes who qualify to
compete at the North American Final. The HERSHEY’S
Track & Field Games has produced many Olympic medalists
and competing athletes.

Since 1983, the organization has raised more than $4.7 billion—most of it $1 at a time—for 170 children’s hospitals across the United States and Canada, which, in turn, use the money where it’s needed the most. These donations have gone to support research and training, purchase equipment, and pay for uncompensated care, all in support of the mission to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible.
62 children enter a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital for treatment every minute. That's one child every second. Some are battling cancer. Some are suffering from a traumatic injury. Others require constant care because they were born too early, or with a genetic disease. Regardless of why the kids are there, 170 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals always have their doors open.

The Strategic Directives were written and voted into effect by
the District Board during the Summer Board meeting. The
directives’ implementation is an attempt to encourage and
guide leaders and members in the right direction so that all of
our hard work is effective to our goals.
Keep K-Family connected and informed Create a k-family chair within each Key Club. Chairs will attend at least one K-Family meeting per month.
Target students to become and stay involved Have a recruitment committee or chair in each club. Encourage one-on-one communication. Identify problems, even if they don’t have an immediate solution.
Uphold a respectable reputation for KCI Board members wear business casual at club visits, professional preferred. Try to wear board polos at as many projects as possible. Encourage each Key Club to strive towards achieving at least 50
hours per member.
Create a standardized system to preserve KCI values and ideals To create a service committee to include one chair per decided project, to include the Governor’s project, current International project, and current service projects. Create a standardized sheet for lieutenant Governors to distribute immediately following their election. Sheet will be distributed to
Presidents describing forms and district requirements (OCFs, secretary and Treasurer Reports, etc).
Encourage continued service Ensure that Key Club is not the end of service.
