Lesson 4: What are Maps and what is the eight Main Directions of the Compass Rose?
• Maps are very detailed representations of what the world actually looks like, but reproduced on paper or electronically.
• North, east, south and west are the four main directions of a compass rose.
• You also need to know the four directions in between these main ones. These are: north-east, south-east, south-west and north-west.
• Upwards on a map is always north.

Lesson 6: How do we show Height on Maps?
• Contours allow us to understand the relief of the land.
• Relief is the height and shape of the land e.g. steep/gentle.
• This means that we can recognise certain landscape features just by looking at the contour lines.
The closer the contour lines are ‘bunched’ together, the steeper the land is.
The more spaced out and further apart the contour lines are, the flatter and less-steep the land is.
Height is also shown by spot heights, showing the height (usually in metres) above sea-level.
Height is also shown by layer colouring on some maps – different colours are used to show how high the land is above sea-level.
