Dear Parents/Carers
We welcome applications from students who are keen to follow the courses we offer in
the ethos that is a characteristic feature of our sixth form. We look forward to
welcoming you and to working with you on your progress.
Sixth formers work in a friendly, but work focused environment. Great importance is
attached to the relationship that the students share with both their teachers and their
form tutors who monitor progress, oversee their personal development and prepare
them for the next stage of their lives, whether that is university, college or the
workplace.
The Sixth Form offers a range of courses and experiences. Alongside our A level
offering we have Diploma courses to fully support students. Our sixth formers have an
impressive history of gaining outstanding results, preparing our students for a successful
transition into higher education or employment. It is a special feature of the Sixth Form
that they also contribute so much to school life along the way.
Commitment and flair by both students and teachers are two essential criteria's for
academic success and all prospective students should be very clear that at least 16
hours of study per week outside of lesson times will be necessary for success within their
courses.
Finally, I would like to assure all prospective students either from this school or from
other schools that we have an induction process to help you make realistic and
appropriate choices. If you are currently studying elsewhere, please come along and
meet us. Our Sixth Formers will be glad to give you a guided tour of the school and we
will be happy to discuss all aspects of the Sixth Form with you. Making the right choice
at this very important time in your career is fundamentally important.
We look forward receiving your applications.

COURSE INFORMATION
COURSE OUTLINE:
Do you wonder what fuels our apparent fixation with celebrities? Is it just gossip? What about the way that your gender, religion and ethnic background open up or close down opportunities in your life, how far does the media affect your personal lifestyle and how your choices are viewed by wider society? How do these social changes affect people at every level of their social life? Sociology is the study of how society is organised and how we experience life. If you become a sociology student you will not be provided with quick answers. As a sociology student, you will discover how to think about these issues for yourself; what are the questions behind the questions? Many have found that sociology makes them look at the world in new ways. In each module you will study how the individual is affected by society and its organisation. Module studies include: Families and Households, Health, Mass Media, Education, Wealth, Politics and Power, Poverty and Welfare, Work and Leisure, Crime and Deviance, Social Inequality, Sociological Theory and Research Methods.
DETAILS OF ASSESSMENT:
You will study two compulsory units which will be assessed by two written papers.

COURSE OUTLINE:
A Level Media Studies is designed to enhance your understanding
and appreciation of the media and its role in your daily life. The
course introduces you both to media ideas and the practice of
production, which gives you the chance to develop a real
understanding of media platforms, the contemporary media
landscape and the influential role of the media in today’s society.
This course helps you develop three relationships with the media. As
a ‘consumer you’ll become more aware of the many ways in which
media messages are presented to us, as well as discovering how the
institutions which produce and distribute media products are trying to
reach you. And if you want a career in media, producing and
evaluating your own media productions will give you a real hands-on
understanding of both how media messages are created and what
they are aiming to do.
WHAT DO I NEED?
An excellent academic record, especially in English
A love of the media
Analytical skills
Critical thinking skills
Patience and good organisation
Creative flair
DETAILS OF ASSESSMENT:
Both years have similar patterns of assessment in Media Studies. In
year one you’ll sit a two hour paper on ‘Investigating Media’, which
will count for 50% of your marks for the first year. Your two
productions for ‘Creating Media’ - plus a 1500 word essay - will
account for the other 50%.
In the second year, your two hour examination will be on the ‘Critical
Perspectives’ unit and account for 50% of your marks for the year.
The ‘Research and Production’ coursework unit - which requires a
2000 word research essay (or equivalent) plus a linked and fully
realised production - will account for the other 50% of your marks. A

COURSE INFORMATION
COURSE OUTLINE:
Film Studies is designed to deepen students' understanding,
appreciation and enjoyment of film, the major art form of the
twentieth century, and one developing new modes of expression and
exhibition in the first decades of the twenty-first century. The
specification builds on the cineliteracy learners have developed
informally since childhood. They will study film deriving from a
variety of production contexts and experienced in a variety of viewing
situations. They will also engage with a wide range of different kinds
of films, developing skills of observation, critical analysis and
personal reflection, as well as developing their creativity and
practical skills, either in audio-visual or written form.
In particular, the specification explores the relationship between the
film and the individual by exploring how films create meanings and
produce both intellectual and emotional responses. Additionally, the
aesthetic and sensory qualities of film are emphasised as integral to
a study of the interaction between films and spectators.
The study of film producers and audiences explores issues of
production and consumption: the supply of and demand for films.
Some of the recurring debates within film culture will be explored.
These include the global dominance of Hollywood, strategies for
supporting indigenous film and the significance of fandom. The
specification introduces students to the diverse range of film forms
and film styles developed in different places throughout the history of
cinema. In giving students the opportunity to study significant film
movements and aspects of national cinemas, it is intended that an
interest in film culture will be fostered which can be taken forward in
lifelong learning.
DETAILS OF ASSESSMENT:
During the first year, there is one exam which accounts for 20% of
the A level along with two pieces of coursework; one written, one
creative (a short film) weighted at 30%. In the second year 25% is
another exam and the final 25% research and practical production
coursework. A L

working with industry, learning how to use CAD/CAM;
graphics and traditional modelling skills.
In the second year you’ll get to grips with ‘Design and
