LET’S HAVE A LOOK ON THE PRESENT SCENARIO OF EDUCATION IN INDIA THE GLOBAL ECONOMY IS UNDERGOING STRUCTURAL TRANSFORMATION: THERE WILL BE NEED FOR A WORKFORCE OF 3.3 BILLION BY 2020. THIS STRUCTURAL SHIFT IN EMPLOYMENT WILL INCREASE DEMAND FOR SOPHISTICATED WORKERS, INNOVATORS, AND THINKERS WHO CAN THRIVE IN A GLOBALLY-CONNECTED AND DYNAMIC ECONOMY. ACCORDING TO MHRD, “NUMBER OF UNIVERSITIES HAS NOTABLY INCREASED FROM 20 IN 1950 AT 3285%, TO 677 IN 2014, WHICH CONSISTS OF 51 INSTITUTIONS OF NATIONAL IMPORTANCE (16 IITS, 30 NITS AND 5 IISERS), 45 CENTRAL UNIVERSITIES, 318 STATE UNIVERSITIES, 185 STATE PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES, 129 DEEMED TO BE UNIVERSITIES AND FOUR INSTITUTIONS ESTABLISHED UNDER VARIOUS STATE LEGISLATIONS.
INDIA, WITH ITS LARGE WORKFORCE AND INCREASING POOL OF HIGHER EDUCATION GRADUATES, IS STRATEGICALLY POSITIONED TO REAP THE BENEFITS OF THIS SHIFT. HOWEVER, THE ‘DEMOGRAPHIC DIVIDED’ WILL BE SQUANDERED UNLESS INDIA IS ABLE TO CREATE A “GLOBALLY RELEVANT AND COMPETITIVE” HIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEM THAT SERVES THE REQUIREMENTS OF BOTH THE DOMESTIC AS WELL AS GLOBAL ECONOMY.

CURRICULA IN MANY INSTITUTIONS ARE POORLY DESIGNED AND OUTDATED. THERE OFTEN NEEDS TO BE A GREATER BALANCE BETWEEN THEORY AND PRACTICE, A CHANGE FROM A TRADITIONAL TEACHING MODE TO A MORE MODERNIZED, INTERNATIONAL, INNOVATIVE, AND INTERACTIVE TEACHING MODE, AND IN GENERAL GREATER RESPONSIVENESS TO AND ALIGNMENT WITH THE SECTOR’S NEEDS.

Challenges in Hospitality and Tourism Education
INDUSTRY- ACADEMIA NEEDS TO WORK IN HAND TO HAND WITH EACH OTHER FOR CURRICULUM DESIGNING, PLACEMENTS , SKILL DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENTS. POOR IMAGE OF BUSINESS SECTOR/OCCUPATION AND LACK OF APPLICANTS WILLING TO WORK IN PART-TIME/CONTINGENT ROLES.
THERE IS OFTEN A LACK OF INDUSTRY-GOVERNMENT-EDUCATION ENGAGEMENT TO DISCUSS AND RESOLVE TALENT ISSUES
