to book asap if you know you will require a place    Dear Parents,  The term has been continuing apace:  Linton Zoo Visits 

 Year 1 children were given some hands on experiences last week when Linton Zoo visited the school with a variety of different animals. The visit was designed to tie in with the children’s work on classification as well as their rainforest topic work. The zoo experts described each animal’s unique features and also explained how they adapt to their different habitats. The children met African land snails, giant spiny stick insects, a royal python, a spiny thigh tortoise, a giant continental rabbit and even a dragon!  

  World Book Day I was so impressed to see such a range of fabulous potato characters for World Book Day dreamed up by our Pelican children and parents.  Although we had one winner in each year group, I think everyone was a winner because they had clearly enjoyed the challenge, accomplished with or without the help of parents, so very well done to everyone.   Our year group winners were Rhea Sethi in Nursery for Norman, The Slug with the Silly Shell, Theo Hirzel in Reception for his Gruffalo’s Child, Henry Howarth in Year 1 for his Hungry Caterpillar and 

Henry Sutherland in Year 2 for his Mr Tickle.    

 

  

  

      Oak Class Assembly  

Last Friday Oak class captivated the whole school with their rainforest class assembly. They demonstrated their learning through drama, poetry and song, bringing their project work to life. The assembly ended with a clever adaptation of the song ‘Bills’ by Lunch Money Lewis and 

everyone was grooving to the beat! The children’s enthusiasm and pride in their work was a joy to see; thank you to Mrs Greenwood, Mrs Carter and Mrs Campbell for 

assisting the children and giving them the confidence to perform with so much enjoyment.   

   

 

 Pelican Marathon   On Tuesday the children were all very excited to take part in our Pelican Marathon and eager to raise money for our 400 Charities: East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, Christel House Schools and an Enduring Gift. Mrs Wilson, from The Perse Prep, led a dynamic whole school aerobic warm‐up and then each year group set off to complete their running challenge. 

Following a giant circuit around the school the children completed as many laps as they could in 30 minutes. Individual laps were recorded with stamps on race cards. The totals were added together in house groups and the Woodpeckers were thrilled to be awarded the house cup for collectively running the most laps. We were absolutely astounded to discover that the distance covered overall was almost the equivalent of 11 marathons.   So far we have raised a fantastic £2047.36! We would be very grateful if all 

remaining sponsorship money could be handed into the school office by the end of next week. Thank you very much for your support.  

 

  Stibbington Trip  Year 2 had an exciting day at Stibbington stepping back in time as evacuees in the 1940s.  The children were met by 2 teachers at Wansford station and boarded a train before heading over the fields of Stibbington to see where they were going to be living during the war. They experienced a typical school day in World WarII and even had to make a dash for the 

air raid shelter when the siren sounded in their lesson! They sampled spam sandwiches and spiced cake for their lunch. All of the children made their own identity labels and have returned to 2016 with a true understanding of what life was like for children during the war.  

  

 

   

 Cedar and Willow Class Assembly, 9 am, Thursday, 17th March  A reminder that Year 2 will be performing an assembly on their World War II topic on Thursday and families are most welcome to attend.  This assembly will be recorded for you so if small children are making their own contributions to the recording we would be most grateful if you could take them out.  Order forms for the DVD will be coming home in book bags on Monday. 

  400 Concert – 5.30pm Friday 18th March at the Upper School This event will see ensembles and choirs from the three Perse schools perform in concert together for the first time. It will culminate in a premiere of the piece commissioned to commemorate the school’s 400th anniversary year, composed by Rachel Leach and pupils from the Pelican, Prep and Upper.  There will be choir and band items from The Pelican, The Prep School Senior Choir, Upper School Percussion Ensemble and The Upper Symphony Orchestra – all combining together as one ensemble for the performance of the commission.   Parents of performers have been allocated priority tickets, but otherwise seating at the event will be allocated on a first‐come‐first‐served basis.   

Easter Service – Monday 21st March No bags will be sent home on Friday 18th March to simplify proceedings at St John’s Church on Monday 21st March.  Children will be leaving from Larks at 8.25am to walk to the church and all other children need to arrive at the church by 8.50am for a prompt 9am start to our Easter service. Nursery 

children who are not in session on Monday mornings are welcome to take part in the service, however, if they are reluctant to sit with the other children we would prefer them to sit with their parents.   

  Founder’s Day Wednesday 23rd March Stuart Dressing‐Up Day As this year is a particularly special Founder’s Day, we will be celebrating Dr Perse’s 400th birthday on Wednesday 23rd March by dressing up in our Stuart costumes once again, having some special food and participating in the 400 Art 

Project (see below).   400 Art Project On the 22nd and 23rd of March the children will take part in one of our special 400th year celebration activities. Working with a range of materials the children are going to design and make a number of pieces of permanent mosaic style artwork. The completed works will be installed in and around the school during the Easter holidays and should be ready for viewing when the children return for the Summer Term.   

   

 Club Pelican There is very limited availability for Club Pelican this Easter, 4th – 8th April. If you would like to book one of the remaining places please email clubpelican@perse.co.uk.     

  

400th Anniversary Fundraising Ball Raffle Information  There is a large charitable dimension to our 400th anniversary as we raise funds for East Anglia Children’s Hospices, Christel House Schools, and our own Enduring Gift campaign which part funds the School’s important bursary and outreach work together with an element of the Performing Arts Centre project.  So far in our anniversary year we have raised £9,000.  One of our key fundraising occasions is the Spring Ball at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford on Saturday 23 April.  Over 700 Ball tickets have been purchased and the event is now sold out.  However, even if you can’t attend the Ball in person there is still an opportunity to help with our fundraising, and win some great prizes by purchasing tickets for the charity raffle.  Further information is attached to this newsletter.   Housekeeping… 

 School Uniform John Lewis now have all items of Pelican school uniform in stock other than size 5‐6 sweatshirts, which will be available next month. John Lewis extend their apologies to parents for the recent problems with uniform availability and have assured us that they have now rectified this.  

  Changes to Drop off and Collection Arrangements?  Please remember to let the school office know if there are any changes to your usual drop off or collection arrangements, including collection by friends or relatives. 

  

Parking  Our neighbours have asked us to remind parents to please park considerately when dropping off and collecting children. Please do not block our neighbours’ driveways at any time, even if it is only 

for a couple of minutes.    

        If your child will be leaving The Perse Pelican... A reminder to parents that in accordance with our Terms and Conditions, if your child will be leaving The Perse at the end of the summer term, at least one term’s written notice must be given or you will be liable for fees in lieu of notice. 

 

As I draw to a close the smell of Nursery’s freshly baked bread is wafting up the stairs…. I am off to investigate!
