Dear Parent/Carer, Our Showcase this week has been the most outstanding triumph. Our 140 strong cast, led by the Creative & Performing Arts team, took their audience on an incredible journey of humour, fear and genuine delight through their eclectic range of performances. It was so very fitting that our Showcase could take place at the Arts Depot, affording our students the opportunity to perform in a professional setting. The atmosphere in the audience was electric and I am so very proud. It was particularly special for pieces which have seen us win the Barnet Schools Dance Competition and Welwyn Youth Drama Festival performed to wider audiences; you could really see why we hold these prestigious titles! I cannot wait until December. A huge well done to all. This week has also seen our Prize Giving Ceremony. This very special afternoon saw students awarded for effort, attainment and demonstration of the Archer Way; alongside special awards supported by local businesses and the Governing Body. We were joined at the ceremony by Tania Campbell-Golding from the charity My Start to give the guest address and she spoke poignantly of the power and importance of education. A full list of the award winners is shown later in the newsletter; however, I have noted the winners of the most coveted awards below they deserve to be very proud of themselves. Founders Award for Creativity Milan S Founders Award for Community Engagement Saskia H Founders Award for Achievement Sama S Bishop’s Park Award for Outstanding Code of Conduct – Finlay C & Ellie C Next week sees the Year 8 trip day and our Sports Day on Tuesday at Allianz Park. Please check details in relation to the timings and expectations for Sports Day in the letter you received this week. Sports Day has been very special over the past 2 years and I look forward to celebrating and enjoying our students sporting prowess. This will be our final newsletter of the year. Thank you for all of your support throughout this year; I am so proud to be headteacher of such a special and thriving school. So much has been achieved by staff and students and I am very much looking forward to the adventures ahead of us from September as we become a campus school. I look forwards to seeing families at our Summer Party on Saturday from 1pm till 5pm at our Stanley Road campus. Have a wonderful and restful summer holiday. Well done to our Jack Petchey award winners. It was wonderful to celebrate your achievements at the award ceremony this week.

English department update – Miss Victor

KS4 English: As part of the reformed English GCSEs, students will no longer be able to take books into the exam. As a result, it is even more important than ever before that students have their own copies of texts, in order that they can revise and re read at home. In September, students will start reading Macbeth for their literature exam. I have ordered copies of the exam board recommended edition, and it is available for students to buy at £7.99. Parentpay will be open for you to pay for this until 5pm on Monday 18th. I can then ensure students have their copies to read over the summer holidays in preparation for September. There is also a reading and writing summer challenge for year 9 students, to prepare them for KS4, along with a book list of texts they will study for English GCSE and recommended editions to purchase. Copies of these, along with the English GCSE overview PowerPoint from my presentation at the upper school parents evening, will be available on the school website next week.

Author Workshop with Stephen Kellman – Miss Victor

This half term, 40 year 9 students were selected to take part in a book challenge. This involved students reading ‘Pigeon English’ by Stephen Kellman; a phenomenal novel shortlisted for the Man Booker prize in 2011 and also on the new English literature GCSE AQA specification. Students were each assigned a reading mentor; teachers and staff including Ms Harrison, Mrs Wolfe, Mr Wick and Mrs Vandervelde. Students then met with their mentors weekly to discuss their reading progress and themes and issues raised in the novel. On Monday 11th July, these students took part in a book celebration event, in which we had a big book group discussion, enjoyed cake and then… the author of the novel, Stephen Kellman came in! We were delighted he could join us, and students were enthralled as he discussed the book and central themes and character. They also had the chance for a long Q&A session. Students were given their copies of the book to keep, as a reward

for doing so well, and they had the opportunity to get these signed by Stephen Kellman at the end of the event! It was a fantastic afternoon and I am looking forward to taking students to see a play adaptation of the novel next half term.

Author Visit – Mrs Wolfe

Two of our Year 8 girls had a rare treat this week when author Sita Brahmachari visited The Archer to reveal her latest fictional character. Sita, author of such delightful and emotional novels as Artichoke Hearts and Car Wash Wish was inspired to create her new character after meeting Avisha and Nina M about a year ago. She was keen to bring the day-to-day travails of people coping with a disability into sharper focus. The girls were absolutely thrilled when they were asked for their input, a chance to edit Sita’s manuscript! The Archer is honoured that Sita visits us so regularly and we are all looking forward to being able to read her book next year.

Meeting of Minds – Mrs McMullan

Over the past half-term a group of over 30 Year 9 students have been taking part in our new programme ‘Meeting of Minds.’ Students were provided with challenging reading materials to read and reflect on before being invited to attend University-style seminars on a range of interesting and challenging topics, including ‘the use of human suffering to advance political agenda and ‘historical research and military history.’ Other seminars posed thought-provoking questions such as ‘global warming: fact or fiction?’ and ‘is it possible to be addicted to happiness?’ We have been thoroughly impressed by our students’ ability to understand academic reading materials and sources and to engage with higher levels of academic discussion in the seminars. We have no doubt that these higher level thinking skills will be invaluable in preparing students for the demands of their GCSE courses and we look forward to further developing this programme next year.

Maths department update – Mr Davies

The Archer Academy in the Top Ten schools in the South The online Maths activity site www.mangahigh.com has been running the Boss of the South competition since Monday, with over 8,500 students across the South of England taking part. The competition runs until 1pm Tuesday 19th July, so it's all to play for. Here's an update on the scores so far...

There's fantastic work going on from all schools taking part in Boss of the South, with over 200 schools joining in the fun so far. The school that is first on the leaderboard at 1pm on 19th July will win a £250 Amazon voucher, and the schools finishing in 2nd-10th place will win a £100 voucher. Can The Archer Academy stay in the top ten? Will any of our students win a REAL medal? Any student who earns 150+ points during Boss of the South will win a REAL medal in the post! Your students can keep track of their score using the Boss of the South progress bar on their profile. All students in ALL year groups have been asked to complete as many mangahigh tasks as possible between now and Tuesday at 1pm. Fingers crossed we finish in the top ten... * Leaderboard as of 5.15pm 13/07

This week’s Maths problem – the infamous Hannah’s sweets GCSE question

Well done to Quinton in Year 9 who completed last week’s problem.

Race the neighbours – Sarah Glennon

Well done to our team of Archer parents, staff, governors and community members, who ran 10k to support the school in Sunday’s Race The Neighbours. N2 managed to win the race against N10 for the second year in a row! Thank you for all your generous donations, we have raised £2,595 for the school. If you would like to contribute you can still do so here: https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/archerteam Thanks again!

Head of Year updates – Mr Naylor

Year 9 – Mr Savage Thank you to all the parents who attended the Upper School parents evening on Tuesday evening, if you were unable to attend the information presented will be uploaded to the website shortly. As the year draws to a close and we reflect on the past year I am mindful of the wealth of events and opportunities Year 9 students have had this year. From trips to the House of Lords, Careers Day, Showcase, Amsterdam, Camber Sands and many more. Traditionally Year 9 can be seen by some as a tricky year. I feel that although we have been presented with challenges along the way, at nearly every bump in the road Year 9 have handled situations with aplomb and learned valuable lessons along the way. I am proud of the way Year 9 have conducted themselves and applied the core values of the Archer Academy. It was lovely to see so many of you at LRD, and I know that you and your children have benefitted from an in-depth conversation with a member of staff and coming up with targets that will help your child be even more successful in Year 10. I look forward to celebrating your child’s graduation into the upper school on Monday night, it looks to be a fantastic event. I have very much enjoyed working with you and your child this year and I look forward to helping to move our pioneering year group ever forward in the years to come. Have a lovely summer,

Year 9 Stars of the Week

Zahra, Sama, Zaynah and Anjola - Engaging their community with fantastic assembly.

Year 8 – Mr Hepworth As the year draws to a close it is a time for reflection of the progress we have seen from our great cohort of students this year. I said at the start of the year that we have some real world changing personalities in our midst; this still continues to be an extremely valid point. At times I have felt like a proud parent seeing the amazing talents displayed by the students in events like our Showcase, athletic events, musical theatre and solos, team sports and science to name but a few. It has been a year where students have grown and experimented with their skills and developed their talents in new areas that they may not previously have known. It is with a tinge of sadness that I write my final newsletter article as Head of Year 8. I feel extremely proud of the way that the students and tutors have worked closely with each other throughout the year and supported each and every one. There have been challenging times for all this year and at times like this we discover who we really are and understand the strength of empathy and compassion. I feel very confident in handing over the charge of this incredible group of students to Ms Humphrey and I will continue to support her and the team of tutors. I would like to thank parents who have been extremely welcoming and supportive as we both work towards providing the best possible support for students and open doors to opportunities for them to explore. I am confident that this will continue next year and I will be leading on many aspects of PE which will include many of the Year 9, as they will be known, in competitions and events across the city and county. Monday will see our celebration trip to Chessington. Students need to be at school for 7.30am for registration which will allow buses to leave at 7.45am. We will be back at school around 5.45pm, allowing for the predicable M25 traffic. Hot on the heels will be Sports Day which is an absolute highlight for me. I have been impressed with our athletes

throughout the year and the anticipation and extra training that students have put in place to claim some new records has been well noted. Please ensure your child has everything they need for the day and meets everyone at Allianz Park at 9am on Tuesday. Again, a huge thank you from me. Ms Humphrey, over to you.

Year 8 Stars of the Week

Caspar Q, Yasamin R, Sorcha K, Isabelle W, Lily-Mae B, Evie W for regularly achieving everything the Archer Academy represents.

Year 7 – Miss Pearson This week has been exceptional because so many Year 7 students have been involved in the Showcase; it was a delight to see them perform in a variety of sketches and I was very impressed by their skill, talent and professionalism. I have no doubt that Sports Day on Tuesday will be another opportunity in which our students shine; I hope they enjoy themselves and work together as a team. Please remember, they need a packed lunch and plenty of water and sun screen. I look forward to celebrating their sporting achievements at Allianz Park. As you know I shall be leaving the Archer Academy at the end of this term and it has been a pleasure to work with you and your child/children in their first year of secondary education. I am confident they will continue to flourish under the direction of Mr. Jamie McSherry, their new Year Head, and wish them every success for the future. Thank you for all your best wishes and I wish you a very relaxing and enjoyable summer.
