Success Rate A key behavior for the effective teacher

is organizing and planning instruction that yields moderate-to-high success rates,

but then challenges the learner to go beyond the information given.

The students' success rate is a valuable piece of data that can help teachers make decisions about the appropriate level of difficulty and the appropriate pacing of instruction.

Levels of Difficulty• high success, in which students

understand the tasks and make only occasional careless errors;

• moderate success, in which students have partial understanding but make some substantive errors;

• low success, in which students do not understand the task at all.

Instruction & Ss. Success Rate

• Consistently, instruction that produces a moderate-to-high success rate results in increased achievement. This likely occurs because more content is covered at the learner's current level of understanding. This is especially true for expository (lecture) forms of instruction.

• Instruction that promotes low error rates (high success) also contributes to increased levels of student self-esteem and to positive attitudes toward the subject matter.

Students Engagement & Ss. Success Rate

• Elicit the desired behavior.

• Provides feedback.

• Uses individual or group activity.

• Uses meaningful verbal praise.

• Monitors & checks each S.

• Teach verbs using TPR.

• Use peer-correction in writing drafts.

• Play games online at Multimedia labs.

• Good, bravo, excellent, good try..explain why is correct?

• Limit contact for each S for 30 seconds providing instructional answers.

Summary-Key Behaviors

• These five behaviors - lesson clarity, instruction variety, task orientation, student engagement, and success rate - are the keys to effective teaching. Without the knowledge and skill to present lessons that are clear, that incorporate variety, that are task-oriented, and that actually engage students in the learning process at moderate-to-high rates of success, no teacher can be truly effective in producing desirable patterns of student achievement and attitude. Clearly, many behaviors must be orchestrated into patterns of behavior for teaching to be effective. This can be seen in the overlapping relationships among the five key behaviors and the many other behaviors that may be needed to successfully carry out any one or combination of the key behaviors.
