Welcome by Prof. dr. Tom Coppens and Magali BoffetCoordinators of the Citylabs LA project
Goals of the inception meeting
• To get to know each other • To discuss the general outline of the project • To have an introductory discussion on Problem
Based Learning (PBL)• To discuss the implementation of PBL modules at
LA HEI’s • To discuss the financial guidelines and reporting
Who is who? Introduce yourself
Citylabs: Project outlineProf. dr. Tom Coppens
Citylabs LA: Rationale
• Overall goal? • Innovation in Learning methods • through Problem Based Learning (PBL) • to create networks between HEI’s and societal actors,
focusing on sustainable cities• Why problem based learning?
• Traditional learning methods (ex cathedra) have relatively poor performance
• PBL learns from real life problems and closes the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge
• PBL is focused on the application of knowledge and skills • PBL strengthens competences in interdisciplinary and
transdisciplinary approaches
CITYLABS LA
• Why focusing on “sustainable cities”• Need for a relevant and common theme as a vehicle for
innovation in teaching methods• Selected “niche” in which innovation is already present
(architectural studio’s), but can be broadened throughout the university
• Opportunities to focus “PBL” on relevant and actual problems that need an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach
CITYLABS: HOW?
• Develop a common knowledge base on PBL • Create “interdisciplinary modules” in LA HEI,
focusing on urban problems• Set up linkeages between city governments and LA
HEI around urban problems • Run (accredited) PBL-modules with students from
different faculties • Organize LA-wide competition between student
teams on sustainable solutions for cities• Organize a conference with results of competition
Partners
• Europe • University of Antwerp, Belgium (Coordinator)• Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, España• Politecnico di Torino, Italia• Université Technologie de Compiègne, France• Aalborg University, Denmark
