TYPING

Many d e t a i l s were added in even

in the sketch models. Great amount of

details are one of the most distinct

characteristics of Shimano’s products.

Shimano’s products have minimal colors , and that was what we kept

in mind while apply brand language to our power tools.

With high quality finished products and powerful engineering of

Shimano, Precision was what we expected from our proto-

type.

STEINHART | COMPUTER MODELING

The purpose of this project is to make a 3D computer model based on an actual object, with precise dimen-sions, and to study how parts come together.I chose to make STEINHART “Nav B-Uhr 47” watch.

REMOTE ACCESS LAMP | SMOOTH BODY

The goal of this project was to design a practical lamp that solve common problems and incoporate a design language from Smooth Body car era.

Smooth body is one of the best example styles from car industry in late

1990s that focused on a fast innovation and an individual design lan-

guage for each brand. The cars feature smooth design as if their form

emerged from rocks shaped by water. Overall form is integrated. Details

are carefully designed to keep the flow along the shapes. Aerodynamics

is the focus of the design.

Redesigning garden tools is a challenge. They are everyday objects that have rarely been changed in decades. However, I saw this as an opportunity. No one has changed them, doesn’t mean they can’t be improved.

Testing and Analysis

Searching for a better gripMost of the time what we are looking for is already some-where out there. We just need to find it. We may not need to invent

the whole new system. This project is a good example. Power tools,

which are more expensive, and generally offer better grips.

Step 1 Force tool into the ground Step 2 Use the leverage of the shaft to pull up the soil

Step 3 Lift material and discard off to the side

= Pressure points

Repeated motions create back pain.

Cause strain and ligament injuries about shoulder.

Many users, especially women, use foot to help pushing.

Action = ReactionThe harder the use push the shovel into the ground, the more ground reaction force afflict upon the user.

Lifting cause back pain, but not as much as Step 2Some are caused by Wrong Position “I don’t know where to hold this thing.”

Women and seniors tend to have not enough leverage.

Users’ hands usually slide along the shaft and get cuts from splinters.

Some even lost control, and the shovel flew out of hands creating hazardous condition for user and others.

Questionaire in the test focused on Us-ers’ past Experience, Control/Weight/Length/Leverage/Grip of our shovel. We let users rate and comment all of our test models to find strength and weakness of our designs.

Prototyping based on the test result. We chose hard wood for durability and nice grain finish.

Step-on space provide area for users to push the shovel into the ground with their foot easily.

“I have never felt comfortable using a shovel this much before.”

Firm gripthat can hold in 2 different positions

Firm grip, better leverage

Easy dig

• Better Leverage• Less back pain• Less chance of ligament injuries

• No slip, no cuts• Adjustable Length

• Firm grip• Clear designate hands’ positions
