call it, and so it is proving. As I write it is a beautiful sunny day; definitely a sign that Spring has sprung. Today is St Patrick's Day and in less than two weeks - don't forget! - the clocks go forward. All of which preamble is a nudge about change and growth. The AGM will be upon us faster than you think (see April's newsletter), while this one has an insert re possible new Interest Groups; please take a moment to fill it in and return. Feedback is of the essence. Indeed, thank you all for your feedback and your patience last month when we experimented with holding our meeting in the Assembly Room. It was a most useful and instructive exercise. Slightly - but not by much - in advance, Happy Easter!

News — Interest Groups — Visits and Reports

Bridge - We have a very friendly Bridge group who

meet every Friday afternoon. If you can play Bridge but perhaps have not done so for a little while then please come and join us. I must say, however, that we do not teach it and therefore you must have some knowledge of the game to be able to join. You would be made very welcome. We start each Friday at 1.30pm at the Bridge Club in Field Street and we pay £2 each week and for that you get good company, a very interesting game and refreshments.

Bookworms — We discussed The Curious Incident of

the Dog in the Nightime, and autism in general. Those of us at the meeting enjoyed the book. For our next meeting, we are going to the theatre to see the show with the Theatre Group.

Busy Needles — Are busier than ever! Another new

member joined us this month bringing our membership to eight. Two parcels of beautiful, baby blankets and clothes have gone off to Cardiff to the Life for African Mothers charity for mums who have lost everything in the Ebola crisis and another batch of blankets and coats to Wood Green Animal Shelter in Godmanchester. Thank you too, Knit and Natter Group, for a donation of squares which I've sewn together into a very colourful dog blanket. We are very happy to receive donations of wool, unfinished items etc needles [sic] to say.

Card Making 2 — Once again the creative ladies

manage to make different cards using peel offs, old cds and their own imagination. A few used the colouring sheets given to them to create their own unique backgrounds. I am always asked if I have any vacancies in this group. I am so sorry but this group is full because I can't fit any more around my dining table. Could you start a new group with like-minded people?

Canals & Waterways — On one of our few wet and

windy days 25 of us which included visitors and new members, enjoyed a pleasant afternoon with Mary Matts. We were at a new venue, (as KBC had let us down), which we definitely will not use again. Mary gave us a brief history of the canals including showing us the clothing of the early people on the canals and told us several things that we did not know The second part of the programme was the painting of canal roses. This was fantastic. She was so quick and efficient.

We will all be having buckets with roses on and we cannot wait for everyone to go and paint Jackie’s narrow boat!! Next month Lincoln.

Busy Needles — Card Making 1 — It was so nice to be back with the

card makers again. This is something I do miss when in warmer climes. We had a lot of catching up on news of course, but some very attractive cards were made and several members were brave enough to try rubber stamping to good effect. As always, it never ceases to amaze me that such a variety of cards are produced. I am pleased that so many people share my enthusiasm for the craft. The next meetings will be on April 7th and 8th. Wednesday members please note that this is the second Weds in the month instead of the first. Looking forward already to the next time.

Computer Group — The first of the last two lessons we

looked at Tablet computers but had a bit of a technical problem due to ASDA’s WiFi network. I plan to repeat the Tablet lesson, without the WiFi glitches. Next we looked at all the fun of using e-mail. Attaching and saving attachments, send to a large number of people but retaining their privacy and much more. Hand out sheets are always available for viewing and downloading from www.U3AComputerGroup.co.uk

Due to increased interest in this group and limited space at ASDA, you need to book a place at each meeting by replying to the e-mail I send out a few days before. Country Matters — In February a large group of us

started from the Star & Garter Pub in Chelveston walking towards the old airfield. This is now the site of a wind and solar farm, some of the solar panels are still being fixed to the frames. A few of the old airfield buildings were still standing. From there we made our way back to Chelveston via Caldecote and the church enjoying plenty of snowdrops and a few crocus on the way. The church was open but we refrained from visiting as the Looking at Churches group were due to visit the following week, contenting ourselves instead with the glorious spectacle of snowdrops and winter aconites in all directions around the churchyard including some varieties on sale in the church porch. Many of us enjoyed a meal in the Star & Garter; staff were only able to take cash as the card machine was faulty – fortunately we had sufficient cash to avoid washing up duties!

There will be no meetings in March or April as Derek is still undergoing hospital treatment but we are out and about on 14 May at 10.30 when our visit will be to Church Farm, Great Easton, Market Harborough where we will enjoy a guided walk around the farm with tea/coffee afterwards. Look forward to seeing you all there. Depending on the weather please where appropriate footwear as farms can be muddy places!

Gardening Group — Jottings from my Patch

Potatoes. Continue to ‘chit‘ potatoes, which means placing the tuber with most of the eyes uppermost, in a light but not sunny, cool and frost free place. Continue with the early potatoes but later on in the

month you could try a middle or even a main crop variety. They are now available in the DIY and other shops. If you planted some earlier then earth them up to protect them from late frosts. Pruning. Continue to prune cherry and plum trees, early flowering clematis and spring flowering deciduous shrubs as soon as they have finished flowering. Bulbs. Lift bulbs that have finished flowering where space is needed and heel them into a corner of the vegetable plot Raspberries. If you don’t grow raspberries then think of planting some. They will go into any corner of the garden and are available now. Choose the summer varieties where you will have to wait a year for fruit or one of the autumn fruiting varieties where you could get a crop this year. For existing blackberry plants tie in new growth as it appears. For existing raspberry plants cut down the old canes before new growth appears and when it does leave six good raspberry canes on each plant. Use a post and wire system and tie the retained canes on the middle and top wires, each cane about six inches apart Tomatoes. Start tomatoes by sowing into seed trays in the next few weeks and put them anywhere warm and moist. Cover the seeds and they will germinate in four or five days. They will then appreciate full light but not direct sunlight . The same goes for peppers. When they are five or six inches tall plant tomatoes and peppers in the border or in grow bags in the cold greenhouse. Kitchen Garden. When the weather is right sow main crop varieties of beetroot, carrots, French beans, onion, peas and any other favourite vegetable. By planting them out early you run the risk of losing them to frost, but seed is relatively cheap and if you are lucky you will triumph over the weather, the birds, the creepy crawlies, the squirrels, the mice, the bugs and disease and finish up with a tasty crop with a sense of satisfaction and achievement. Weeds. Keep on top of the weeds by hoeing or hand pulling. They come up easier when the ground is moist but be careful where you tread as you don’t want to compact the soil.

Cransley Coffee Shop made us very welcome, but with the support of new members coming along to enjoy coffee and toasted teacakes, at times it has been rather snug so this is the reason for the change of venue. This will be quite a different experience for some of us but hopefully enjoyable. Do come along and give it a try.

Discussion Group —

The February Meeting was a lively discussion led by David Wise, who had asked us all to research conspiracy theories both true and false, and chose our favourite one to present to the group. Theories varied widely, from Princess Diana's death, the circumstances leading to Marilyn Monroe's death and did the moon landings actually take place? We felt that there were many incidents that were probable conspiracies but they can not be proved to be true or false.

Golf — Well contrary to what the weather "throws" at

us we still meet every Friday at Pytchley Golf Club at around 1.30 for a 1.45 Tee Off. For those of you who don`t know it its an interesting 9 hole course consisting of 1 Par 5, 5 Par 4`s and 3 Par 3`s. We go around well under 2 hours so its not too much out of the day and we usually round it off with a tea or coffee or if you like it a pint!! At present 4 or 5 of us have regularly played and so we could do with a few additional players to make up 2 x 4 balls.

Looking at Churches — In February we had a visit to

Chelveston church on a sunny day in snowdrop time. Jenny Hodgton organised this tour as she is the

organist there. She particularly chose February as the church is surrounded by a carpet of snowdrops & aconites, which was a real wow factor. Some were for sale, so many of us came away with our own souvenirs.

Inside the church it was set out like a cafe at the back, with bright tablecloths on the tables. The whole church looked very inviting and once again we were treated to home made cakes & tea, made by some very friendly parishioners. They are a very close community and the church is very well cared for. In WW2 Chelveston was an airbase for 4000 American airmen and our guide had a few tales to tell about bomber command. There is a large plaque on the outside wall telling of the restoration of the church Tower by the USA military, in recognition of the kindness of the Chelveston villagers. Also inside the church the USA flag hangs over a glass case containing the Governor’s Book, which is full of letters from the governors of every state in America, including Bill Clinton, thanking the people of Chelveston. There is no church visit in March, due to our holiday, so the next one is Wednesday, April 15th at 2.0pm to Haselbech. On July 15th we are going to Fotheringhay, so I am hoping that we can car share. I will make a list of those willing to give a lift, and another one for those needing transport.

Lunch Club — We all enjoyed the February lunch as

usual at the Lamb in Little Harrowden, our thanks go to Elizabeth and Kathleen. Thanks also go to members who put in their names to organise in the future. However there are still a few months to be filled so get in touch if you think it's your turn. In March we will be at Vivo in Burton Latimer: delicious Italian cuisine, sounds wonderful, organised courtesy of Christine Folley. That will be on Tuesday 24

Musical Circles 2 —

Musical Circles 1 — The day before our meeting my husband and I had watched a live performance by the National winners of the 2014 Youth Brass Band competition and were very impressed. Consequently 'Entry of the Gladiators' from one of their CDs seemed an appropriate choice to begin our programme for the afternoon. In contrast we

then watched the first act from Puccini's tragic opera 'Tosca' with the three outstanding singers, Angela Gheorghiu, Jonas Kaufman and Bryn Terfel in the main roles. It was a truly powerful and dramatic performance, a combination of amazing voices and excellent acting skills.

After tea, an aria from La Fille du Regiment was more light hearted but Juan Diego Florez effortlessly hitting the top Cs was delightful. We concluded with 'Softly as I Leave You' (Euphonium soloist Sarah Lenton) again from the 2014 Youth Brass Band. What a joy it is to hear music played by young people without the insistent thump and without amplification. Let's have more of it!

Photography Group —

The Photography Group was due to meet in March at Harrington church, to photograph the magnificent displays of snowdrops and aconites (and a few crocus) in the churchyard. Unfortunately, due to various reasons, all but two of the members had to cancel so the group did not meet. The next meeting is due on April 6th at 2.00pm. The venue is still to be decided.

Playford English Country Dancing - I’m at home making progress slowly. Hopefully, I should be able to start sessions. again after Easter. The first one will Wednesday April 22nd from 2.30-4p.m. at St. Andrews Church Hall.

Spanish Conversation —

The Spanish conversation group continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. Our sessions are normally free as we have the use of ASDA’s Training Room free of charge. We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students Having accepted three new students who all have previous experience of the language, we are now definitely at full capacity. However, we would be happy to start a waiting list but because of the level our members are at, having completed more than two years of study, new students would need to have a reasonable knowledge of basic Spanish.

Safe Driving — Safe Driving Group

Are you concerned about your driving? Perhaps you’re concerned that your reactions aren’t as fast as they used to be or that your general driving ability has deteriorated over time. You may feel that you just need a little reassurance after a break from driving or prior to reapplying for your licence as you approach your 70

th

birthday. You may have lost confidence in your driving ability and are now much more limited in where you are able to travel. If you have these or any other concerns about your driving, we’d be pleased to help. We can offer a short driving assessment of about sixty minutes in your own car and on familiar routes. If you’d like a friend or family member to sit in, that’s fine. At the end of the drive we can discuss your driving and if it isn’t quite up to scratch we can discuss what you might do to improve it. A driving assessment could be a very good investment in your own safety, the safety of your passengers and your confidence behind the wheel. Saturday 24 October coach trip to London £18.00 time available to visit whatever attraction and maybe the theatre group will arrange a group booking if required.

These trips are all subject to a minimum of 30 participants and they are open to non U3A members as they are not subject to U3A insurance liabilities. Theatre Goers — National KINGS SPEECH. Ten tickets were reserved for the show at a cost of £15 per ticket. Three members booked seats but because the least number of seats (7) was not attained the cost of the three tickets increased to £22 per ticket. Because we were unable to purchase the tickets at the actual theatre it also incurred an additional cost of £2.90 per ticket for the booking fee. Therefore the total cost was now £24.90 which was decided a cost too far and the booking was cancelled.

Theatre Group — Local Productions

The Theatregoers local group are a small group of U3A members who enjoy local theatre in particular Ballet, Opera and National Theatre productions at the Kettering Odeon and are filmed live. We meet at the home of Helen McAdams when we wish to discuss which production we would like to go to as a group, We then see if any other members wish to join us and I organise the tickets. Some production are very popular and tickets need to be purchased a couple of months in advance to ensure good seats and also cannot be purchased until paid for. Watercolour Painting —

The dates for the Water Colour Painting Class are as follows:-

March - 12th & 26th April - 16th (last class) (There are no classes during the summer months.) New classes for the Autumn Term will start on 10th September, 2015.

All classes are held in the Parish Church Rooms, Sheep Street, Kettering. Car parking is next to these rooms, also the church grounds may be used.

Walking Group -

For our February walk we started in Sudborough heading towards Slipton and then Lowick. This took us through the estate of Drayton House. We returned to Sudborough for an excellent lunch at The Vane Arms. Our March walk took place on Wednesday, 4th March starting in Broughton. Ten of us started ( and finished!) the testing 6 mile walk via Pytchley. We were more than ready for the good lunch served at The Red Lion. Details of the next walk will be available at the next meeting.

Writers Group —

The March meeting proved to be one of the best we've ever had! The variety of pieces and the outstanding quality were remarkable. A-stars all round. Sadly we shall not be seeing Dave, at least for a while, owing to domestic commitments. However, this does leave us room for one more. If you are interested, please let me know.
