Scripture Lesson: .....................................................................Carol CleggOne look at Him and people turned away. We looked down on Him, thought He was scum. But thefact is, it was pains He carried – disfigurements, all the things wrong with . We thought Hebrought it on Himself, that God was punishing Him for His own failures. But it was our sins that didthat to Him, that ripped and tore and crushed Him– He took the punishment, and that madeus whole. Through His bruises we get healed. We’re all like sheep who’ve wandered off and gottenlost. We’ve all done our own thing, gone our own way. And God has piled all our sins, everythingwe’ve done wrong, on Him, on Him.

Worship Notes:Participants: Dr. Karl Haffner, our senior pastor, presents today’s sermon reflecting on what is known asHoly Sabbath of Holy Week. Elliot Smith, our associate pastor for young adults and the taskforce program, hosts today’s worship and tells the Children’s Story. Today’s Scripture Lesson is read by Carol Clegg, daughter of Irma Bodwell who joined this congregation in 1978. Mel and Irma took out a loan to help buildSpring Valley Academy. Terry Carlisle, who was an associate pastor for this congregation and joined here inNovember of 1978, presents the Prayers of the People. Jerry Taylor, our minister of worship and music, isthe organist/choir director for today’s service.

is often played for worship the week before Easter. In 1878, César Franck composed threepieces for the opening of the Trocadero, a Paris France concert hall that was given a fantastic new pipe organ. This piece has two thematically contrasting themes. The first one in a minor key (the Heroic theme) is wherewe see Jesus riding the donkey into Jerusalem with the children waving palm branches. In the second theme,(the lyrical theme) we see Jesus weeping over the city of Jerusalem, knowing what is about to happen.

is one of the great eight-part anthems that was sung often by the KetteringChurch Choir in 1978 under the direction of Stan Applegate. The composer, William W. James (1896 – 1973)owned Will James Music Service and the conductor of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra. He taught atSouthwest Missouri State College (now University) and was a member of the First & Calvary PresbyterianChurch in Springfield, Missouri.

(Hymn No. 230) was written by Theodulf of Orléans (ca. 760–821). He had beenappointed Bishop of Orléans by Charlemagne. In 818, at Charlemagne’s death, his son Louis the Pious, suspected Theodulf of conniving with an Italian rival and imprisoned Theodulf. From his prison cell on PalmSunday, as the church procession was passing, Theodulf sang this hymn. Louis heard it and released him. Thishymn, that recalls the Triumphical Entry of Christ into the city of Jerusalem, has been sung on the Sundaybefore Easter for nearly 1,000 years.

is a setting of Isaiah 53:6. This is the last verse of today’s scripture lesson in which thecomposer, George Handel in his “Messiah,” uses music to illustrate how twisted and lost mankind can getwithout Christ.

is a chorus from George F. Handel’s oratorio “Messiah.” The text is derived from Psalm24:7-10. The history of the Psalm may relate to the opening of Solomon’s temple or to the ascension of Christ.Today it is sung in reference to Christ who, after talking with Mary, ascended to His Father in heaven. It is acelebration of the heavenly hosts asking, “Who is this King of Glory” just to hear Christ’s name spoken againand again.

is one of the great African-American spirituals that was developed by the slaves for worship. It isbasically built around two chords but is powerful in the way it portrays the mourning following the crucifixion.

is an organ piece derived from Handel’s sungat the offertory. The composer, Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911), was organist at La Trinité Church in Paris,a position he held for 30 years. Guilmant had a career as a virtuoso, giving concerts in the United States (thefirst major French organist to tour this country), Canada, as well as in Europe.

Music and foot washing begins at 7:00 p.m. The disciples will serve Communion at 7:30 p.m.

IV. A Psalm for Saturday (Psalm 130, )

(1-2) Help, God—the bottom has fallen out of my life! Master, hear my cry for help!Listen hard! Open your ears! Listen to my cries for mercy.

(3-4) If you, God, kept records on wrongdoings, who would stand a chance? As itturns out, forgiveness is your habit, and that’s why you’re worshiped.

(5-6) I pray to God—my life a prayer—and wait for what he’ll say and do. My life’son the line before God, my Lord, waiting and watching till morning, waiting and watching tillmorning.

The big news in 1978 was the Great Blizzard. In January Dayton had the the lowest barometric pressure inthe midwest on record and received over 12.6 inches of snow overnight. Almost everything was closed, including Kettering Hospital, where personnel had difficulty coming in or leaving from work if they were at thehospital. Some of our doctors went out afterwards to buy 4-wheel Jeeps just in case and never had to usethem again because it was a fluke of nature. People still talk about that winter.

In the US, President Jimmy Carter stopped development of the Neutron Bomb, approved the Susan B.Anthony dollar and declared Niagara Falls community Love Canal a state emergency, issuing an evacuationnotice, because it was built on a toxic waste dump. California votes passed Proposition 13 which slashedproperty taxes nearly 60%. The Mormons opened up the priesthood to blacks. Cincinnati Reds player PeteRose achieved 3,000 major league hits. CBS soap opera, began, the movie, took the nationby storm, and the world was shocked to hear of the mass murder/suicide of 909 Americans in Jonestown,Guyana.

Starting in January, many of the services were videotaped to be broadcast later at the hospital. There wereno changes in the pastoral staff this year; Bob Clark was the senior pastor, Walt Sherman was an associatepastor, and Don Ashlock was an associate pastor who preached in several area churches and worked duringthe summer in a Field School of Evangelism in Springfield. David Marx and Bev Sawvell were summerinterns who ran the summer program for “Dayton Area Youth Fellowship.” Jerry Taylor, our current ministerof music was in graduate school at Indiana University, played the organ for services for the first time here inAugust while Mel West went on vacation.

Under the leadership of finance committee chairman, Eugene Cowling, the church paid it’s mortgage in full.Celebration services were scheduled for January 28, but because of the blizzard, they were postponed untilFebruary 18. The next projects included adequate parking (which was so tight that members would doublepark and turn in their keys to the deacons) and much needed air conditioning for the sanctuary. From Juneuntil September double worship services were held at 8:00 am with organ in the sanctuary and at 10:50 inthe Fellowship Hall where it was air conditioned.

One of the highlights for church leadership was the visit of a group of professional ministers from variousdenominations taking part in a Pastor’s Professional Leadership Seminar. They wanted to know whyAdventism was so successful. A special church board was called where they could dialogue with our churchleadership and get better acquainted with Adventist thought and methodology.

Christian Scribes, a reading circle that encouraged writers and poets, was organized and met quarterly.Writings from this group began to appear in many of the church’s magazines. The church newsletter, namedfor the first time , began publication and one of the highlights was “The Church Mouse,” a whimsicalgossip column of church "news" written anonymously. The artwork of Wanda Wilkinson spiced up the columnas well as many of the newsletter covers. Dan and Bev Cobb left for Camaroon, Africa to serve the clinicthere as a dentist and nurse.

Under the leadership of Dr. Melvin West, music thrived at Kettering. There was an organ concert each monthfor three-quarters of the year, most by internationally-known artists. Worship services included many organsolos and lots of instrumental music ranging from flute and harpsichord to brass and organ. The ChancelSingers, a group of 16 singers (four singers on each part) were formed and sang for 18 services during theyear. The church choir would meet for major events and sang a special service four times a year as did theSpring Valley Academy choir under the direction of Robert Pound. Kettering Church became the official homeof the Dayton Bach Society with the May 17 concert of the Mozart .
