Scale 1.1

Fabrication - Guidelines for cutting and prepping

General guidelines for cutting and bar preparation:

For further reading on cutting, preparation and workmanship please refer to BS 8118: Part 2: 1991.

Storage and transportation:

Store aluminium in a dry place, clear of the ground. Avoid contact with other metals and with materials such as cement and damp timber.

Protect aluminium extrusion surfaces with low tack removable tapes while danger of damage exists. Pack aluminium during transportation to avoid mechanical damage, abrasion and contact by agents liable to cause surface corrosion or staining.

Fabrication tolerance:

See corresponding sheets for each section type

Marking out:

Fine scribing lines must not be used on critically stressed ares of thin material. Where subsequent welding is involved paint, chalk, graphite or other marking materials likely to contaminate must not be used.

Cutting:

Cutting can be by circular saw or band saw and both must have a tooth form and pitch to suite the thickness of the material to be cut. Cut edges should be smooth, square and free from burrs, distortion and other irregularities. Care must be taken to avoid the use of tools contaminated by other metals, particulary copper or brass. Great care must be taken when working with mitred end cuts to avoid impact damage to ends (ideally bars should not be stored or transported vertically without corner protection).

Drilling, punching and preparation:

Holes can be made by either drilling, drilling and reaming or by punching. Drill holes should be smooth and free from burrs, distortion and other irregularities. Drainage slots must be of the correct diameter and length and positioned correctly. At all times prepared bars should be free from general debris and cutting/drilling swarf.

Assembly:

All joint surfaces should be free of dirt, grease and cutting/drilling debris. All joints shall be sealed against the entry of water by use of a high quality silicone sealant. NB Small gap joint sealant is NOT to be used on painted material - only anodised or mill finish profile. Be careful not to handle or transport frames in such a way as to disturb or open joints by excessive movement or bending of frames etc.

line with the mark. Ensure the anti rotation screw is nearest the swing/passdoor hinge for best angle

4. Screw in and tighten the 3mm pointed anti rotation grub screw. (For hard material IE: Steel/aluminium let the screw make a mark then remove screw and drill a small hole 1.5-2mm hole . Re-fix grub screw)

5. Screw on the outer sleeve complete with the opposite catch still attached. Ensure anti rotation screw is nearest the swing door hinge

6. Carefully position the opposite panel up to the catch7. Mark the perfect position for fixing on the opposite panel 8. Repeat steps 3 & 49. Screw on the outer sleeve10. Show end user how to correctly locate/release the door. Explain the

OPTION A1. Position the swing door at the point you wish it to stop. Allow for lever/lever

handle & some tolerance2. Hold the fully assembled panel catch between your fingers. (Do not unscrew the

back plates yet )3. Offer up the full assembly panel catch and mark the position for fixing on one

panel only.4. Unscrew one back plate and fix with choice of fixings provided in line with the

mark. Ensure the anti rotation screw is nearest the swing/pass door hinge for best angle

5. Screw in and tighten the 3mm pointed anti rotation grub screw. (For hard material IE: Steel/aluminium let the screw make a mark then remove screw and drill a small hole 1.5-2mm hole . Re-fix grub screw)

1. Fix Perimeter of outer frame and ensure frames are plumb and level. Hinge jamb MUST be plumb. Cill/Track MUST be level. Check diagonals. Make sure track is not twisted and that there are no distortions along the tracks length.

Fixings can be placed centrally, or located through gasket and hinge retaining channels - as structure behind permits.Ensure fixing points are corrected shimmed with proprietary horse-shoe frame packers.

Do not fit frame into an opening that is too small (width and height) as no adjustment to line and level will be possible.

2. Load 1st door leaf and adjust height on hinges as necessary. Glaze leaf and ensure toe/heel packing is done to ensure door leaf is square. check clearances are correct and operation. Lock off with 25mm long M5 drilled and tapped into both door and jamb sections - see sheet 15.09.01_6

As with 1st leaf, glaze by the correct method check diagonals and ensure door leafs are in perfect alignment. Top and bottom of door leafs should match. Check that both door leafs operate freely and clearances are correct. check operation of door shoot bolt. Adjust rebate seal compression via shoot bolt guide (KAS537-SGB) if you are not using the fixed centre type (KAS537-SBGF).

Top Guide

Operation of doors:

Opening

Unlock end access (traffic) door leaf first, hinge back and secure via magnetic panel catch. This must be done to allow the movement of door leafs across the frame when the slave door shoot bolts are released and the doors start to fold.

Push doors via D handle hinge, and then mid position of end set to stack fully. Avoid tipping door leafs out of square i.e. the tops of the doors twist ahead or behind the bottom roller units

Do not try to release the slave doors and move the door leafs with the end access (master) door leaf still locked or closed.

Closing

Unfold door leafs across the frame. engage each slave door shoot bolt before shutting and locking the end access (master) door leaf last of all.

Pull doors via D handle hinge or push midway up leafs if open in. Avoid tipping door leafs out of square i.e. the tops of the doors twist ahead or behind the bottom roller units

General care and maintenance

General Care and maintenance

1. Check weekly track and head guide for debris and clean as required.

2. Clean glass and powder coat finishes with mid detergent and warm water, dry with clean soft cloth. Do not use alkaline or abrasive cleaning products.

3. All fixings should be checked 3 monthly for secureness. Lubricate hinges with light machine oil (3 in 1 or similar). Do not use WD40 type oils as these contain solvents that may react with plated finishes (main lock and ancillary parts).

4. Do not use oil or other lubricants in tracks, as this will cause dirt/grit and debris to stick to profiles and cause damage to the rollers and guides.

5. A correctly installed and set up door should require no other maintenance.

6. Typically - gasket and woolpiles are a push or slide fit so any damaged items can be re-placed with the doors insitu.

Important Note:

A poorly fabricated and installed product, or a door subject to abuse or use outside its intended purpose will not be supported by component or overall product warranty

The Winkhaus STV Locking System and Cylinder Maintenance & Lubrication Guide

Winkhaus locking systems are put through very stringent tests to meet the requirements of today’s environment, including cycle testing. The current requirement for PAS 23/24 is 50,000 full cycles of the doorset in order to simulate 10 years average use. The requirement for maintenance is totally dependent on usage and environment, i.e. in areas of high dust or corrosive atmospheres, the requirement for lubrication will be more frequent than normal. We therefore recommend that a light application of spray type grease be used into the apertures of the hooks, dead-bolt and latch, along with a light spraying of WD 40 type lubricant into both sides of the cylinder. In normal usage BI-annual application would be more than sufficient. To prevent any damaging effect to the corrosion protection of Winkhaus fittings, only PER neutral cleaning and care agents should be used, which do not contain any abrasives. We also strongly recommend that the door set is checked over for any movement, swelling or distortion of either sash or frame, if necessary check for debris of any kind interfering with any of the moving parts behind the mechanism itself. This operation will require the mechanism to be removed and replaced by a competent person. Any loose or missing fixing screws should be tightened or replaced as required. Under no circumstances should any aspect of the lock or cylinder be tampered with in any way, as this may affect both the serviceable life and guarantee.
