A few weeks ago I bought anew pair of shoes.

They were on sale at Big Fiveand I needed agood pair ofknockabouts. Itwas all self serve,I looked aroundand found a pairthat looked prettygood. I sat downand tried themon. They lookedOK but the fitwasn’t quiteright. My toes felt squashed. When I took the shoe off therewas a wad of tissue paper stillinside the shoe

“No wonder,” I said to myselfand tried them on again. They fitperfectly. I noticed they werepriced at $19.99, marked downfrom $59.95.

“Such a deal,” I said to myselfand for a moment as I sat thereshoes in hand, I let myself take anostalgic memory trip to a timewhen there was a shoe personwho actually sat on a little stooland helped you try on shoes. Hewould even go in the backroom tofind your exact size and color andalong with the shoes made sureyou got a free shoehorn.

I also remember a Shoe Storecalled GallenCamps. They had agadget that looked like one of theold penny weighing machines.Except these were flouroscopic x-

ray gizmos which actually let yousee what your feet looked likeinside new shoes.

As a kid it was a real thrill tostand on the x-ray machine andwiggle my toe bones. I have noidea how many radiation roent-gens my body absorbed but Iknow I jumped on the machineevery time we were even close tothat store (I probably glowed inthe dark, but didn’t notice it).

As a youngster many of myshoes came from the Sears cata-log. They would come by mail in asturdy box. These were the yearswhen I went barefooted and sel-dom wore shoes, outgrowingthem long before they wore out.

But the box they came in was adifferent story. It was strong andcould be used for all kinds of kidstuff. Storing things, making it agarage for “tootsie toys” (tiny pot-metal brightly colored autos) or asa hanger for my toy airplanes.

In my dotage and since retire-ment, my shoes now are mostlyfabric types, easily washed andcleaned after outdoor activities. But I still miss the old x-raymachine and wonder how myancient toes look inside newshoes, and of course any ambiantradiation that might incur wouldprobably be good for myprostate!

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Secretariat” (PG) — Secretariat,

the 1973 Triple Crownwinner, gets a weirdlycontrived Disneymakeover in this 2010biopic. Diane Lanestars as PennyChenery, the multi-mil-lionaire owner of thehorse. Penny is por-trayed as some sort ofragtag underdog whomust somehow beatthe odds — despitebeing a ridiculouslywealthy woman whoowns the greatest thor-oughbred ever born. But thanks toprayer and John Malkovich, she suc-ceeds!

“Nowhere Boy” (R) — “Kick-Ass”star Aaron Johnson stars as a 15-year-old John Lennon in this touch-ing look at Lennon’s teen years, theformation of The Beatles, and mostof all, his brief relationship with hismother (Ann-Marie Duff). Lennonwas raised by his Uncle George andAunt Mimi (Kristin Scott Thomas),but following the death of his uncle

he seeks out his birth mother, Julia, who introduces the teen to rock nroll and teaches him to play thebanjo. Teen angst and family tragedylead John to take up the guitar andform a band as a way of channelinghis anger and grief.

“Red” (PG-13) — This movie wasa lot more fun than Ithought it would be. BruceWillis leads an all-star castin this rollicking action-comedy about a retiredCIA agent who gets pulledback into the spy gamewhen his house is attackedand destroyed by a teamof black-ops guys. To fig-ure out what is going on,he enlists the help ofMorgan Freeman, HelenMirren and JohnMalkovich. The uber-sexyand funny Mary-Louise

Parker also comes along for the ride,as the bullets and one-liners fly fastand furious.

Q: I love the show “TheMentalist,” and I especially lovethe addition of Agent CraigO’Laughlin. What can you tellme about the actor who portrayshim (I could swear I’ve seen hima movie recently), andwill his romance withGrace Van Pelt contin-ue? — Lydia G., via e-mail

A: Eric Winter, 34,plays the dashing youngFBI agent on the hit CBSshow. Previously, Ericwas best known for hiswork on “Days of OurLives,” “Moonlight” and“Brothers and Sisters.”The recent movie you’rereferring to is “The UglyTruth,” with GerardButler and Katherine Heigl, whichEric said was a thrill to work on.

“That was just a huge opportu-nity that (director) Robert Luketicand Lakeshore gave me,” he toldme recently. “And it was reallyawesome; I had such a blast work-ing with those guys. And my rela-tionship with Katie (Heigl) andGerry (Butler) was a ton of fun. Itwas a huge opportunity. It waskind of a fun, vulgar romanticcomedy — it changes up from thenormal romantic-comedy pace that

you’re used to.”As far as O’Laughlin’s relation-

ship with Van Pelt: “From what Iunderstand, they plan on doing aslow burn. Whatever happensbetween the two of us is definitelygoing to play its course. But there’sa lot to do with my character aside

from that relationship.I’m not in the writingroom, so I don’t know. But I know they have itwell worked out.”

***Q: On “Sons of

Anarchy,” they refer toSAMCRO all the time.Who or what is SAM-CRO? — Sonny W. inTenn.

A: As you know, FX’shit show “Sons ofAnarchy” centers on theTeller-Morrow family of

Charming, CA. SAMCRO refers tothe Sons of Anarchy MotorcycleClub, Redwood Original Chapter. When “Sons” returns this fall, expect some changes in the townof Charming, including a newmayor and a new sheriff.

Here we are into the New Year.I am still adjusting to being visu-ally challenged but I am hangingin there. I hope everyone haspurchased your2011 fishinglicense. For thosewho have notdone so it is a bitdifferent thisyear. You showyour identifica-tion and its com-puter generated.I'm not sure ofthe details but my guess is it is away to keep track of the appli-cants and make issuing duplicatelicenses easier to obtain.

Even though we have hadrecord amounts of rain and therun-off has raised the lake level, itis still early into the season andthe lake level should remain atmid winter level.

I have not been able to get outon the lake lately but those whofish on a regular basis tell me thetrout action around the lake isstill very good with some nicefish being caught.

The recent stocking of Alperson the south side of the lakeshould keep the trout actiongood. Thanks again to theChamber and those involved. I'venoticed that the applications forthe Derby are out, so sign up

early. At this time there are noplants planned for the river inJanuary. My guess is WhiskeyFlats will be the next time forplanting. No reports on the crap-pie or bass bite this week. Hopeto see you on the lake.

Flipping a piece of Real Estate is agreat way to make a buck in this coun-try. Always has been, that’s theAmerican Dream, tobuy low and sell high.Even in the market weare in right now,Flipping is a goodoption for a lot of folkswho are tired of thestock market or gettinga 1% return on CD’s.However, as with anyinvestment, you haveto be smart about it.Here’s five ways to helpensure that you make a good decisionon a property.

1: Do your inspections. So manypeople when they purchase somethingfor speculation don’t want to spendthe money on inspections. They justwant to get the property for as cheapas possible and put as little work into itas they can before they sell it for thegreatest profit. Not a good idea. Spendthe money on at least a Termite, Septicand Home Inspection. Escrows arecontingent on the buyer being happywith inspection results. Know what isright and wrong with a property. It isthe only way to be able to budgetaccordingly for repairs.

2: Be patient, especially in this mar-ket. Don’t jump on the first propertyyou see, look the market over, talk toprofessionals in the area, and seewhom is buying what. Figure whatlocations are better than others. Agreat deal on a great house in a horri-ble area is a lot worse than an ok dealon a house in a great area. Spend timeon research. Find a Real Estate Agentthat is honest, trustworthy and workshard, someone who has been workingin the area for a few years.

3: Do the repairs right. On a flip, you want a property to be ready tomove into, something where a buyerjust has to bring their clothes and a

tooth brush. If there is somethingwrong with the house, fix it. Not onlyfix it, put it in writing with proof…pic-tures even. Buyers dig that, they wantto see what has been done to a home;it helps them take ownership andmakes them feel good about the pur-chase. More importantly, you aredoing right by them and by you.Honesty is not the best policy it is theonly policy.

4: Use good materials. I have seenso many houses, especially when themarket was really rocking, where aseller had put in sub par materials andworkmanship. That flew sometimes inthe old market, but not in this market.Buyers are fewer in number and theyhave more buying power and lendersare more picky about the condition ofa home. Don’t go overboard on thevery best materials for everything, butuse quality stuff that makes sense.Stick with calm paint colors andfloors, use cheaper appliances thatlook good, make sure the home isclean and tidy on the inside and out, etc.

5: Don’t get greedy! Many peoplelost their shirts when the market col-lapsed because of greed. Buying ahome for 100K and trying to get 300K.Look for fair profit. If a home is worthsay 100K at market value, try to get itfor 65K, and sell it for 95K. Price it tomove so your money turns fast.Making a bit less but selling relativelyfast is much better than shooting forthe moon and letting your money sitwhile at the whim of the market. Don’ttake anything personal when it comesto a home, this is a business decision.Make sure that decision makes sensefor all parties.

Martha therefore, when sheheard that Jesus was coming, wentand met him: but Mary still sat inthe house. John 11:20

It is a wild misassumption thatactivity equals value - in otherwords, the more exhausted we are,the more importantmust be our pur-suit. This mis-nomer is not onlygiven wide circula-tion by the freneti-cally driven culturein which we live, but is also full sup-ported by thehuman soul in itsdesperate attemptto find worth andmeaning in life. If you are not cer-tain of the truth or value of what isbeing related here, just try sittingsilent and inactive for the nextsixty minutes. While initially thismight sound tantalizingly delight-ful, we will very likely be driven todistraction and ultimate failure bythe thought that such exercise is atotal waste of precious time.Because these calm qualities ofcharacter are neither valued nordeveloped, we are often at a loss tosee of what worth they might be.Besides, the fault is not ours, forhow can we find any quiet in sucha noisy world?

How sorrowful . . . really. Giventhe word of the Lord to our heartsin the year 2011, you and I areinvited to figure out a way to wadethrough the merciless demandsupon us and quiet our hearts. Thebeautiful call of quiet expectationsmay go against all the grain of ourpresent experience, but it is won-derfully in keeping with the heartof the Father Who knows what is

best for the soul health of His chil-dren. Notice from the above verseof Scripture, that even in the midstof the most distressing of life'sexperience, there can come a placeof calm assurance and quiet expec-tation that Jesus is present, andthat His presence brings themiraculous in ways that we cannot comprehend. The circum-stance that surrounded Mary andMartha's responses to the comingof Jesus was the untimely death oftheir brother Lazarus, and whilewe may know this narrative endswith a phenomenal resurrection, neither of these women could pos-sibly have dared to even think ofsuch a reality.

And so the call comes to us in2011 - can we find our way to aplace of quiet expectation in keep-ing with the working of the Lord inthis season of life? Whateverwould seek to shout out the stillsmall voice of the Holy Spirit with-in us can be declared to stand indirect opposition to the Lord'sdesires. If we remain driven toexhaustion, distraction, and unbe-lief by a never ending search forvalidity (even financial), then theLordship of Jesus, and His desiresto be both our provider and solesource of personal fulfillment willcontinually be frustrated andmissed. How remarkable thatJesus walked into Mary andMartha's circumstance, how amaz-ing that they found a place of trustin His timing and purpose, andhow spectacular was the miracu-lous outcome of His working.Similarly for you and I is the com-mitment of the Lord to walk usthrough whatever circumstance wepresently face, speak quietly of Hisability and willingness to work themiraculous, and all the while showus again and again how loved andcared for we are. Let's find theplace of quiet expectation!
