It was 1955 andI had just returnedto civilian life afterfour years in theNavy, the last twoin SubmarineService. There Iworked with theelectronic techni-cians and the intri-cacies of submarine radar. My sub-marine, the Rasher SSR 269, was aradar picket boat. It was there Ibecame familiar with the electronicworld and missile defense. With thatbackground, as I returned to civilianlife in Fresno, I took a job withNorth American Aviation as an elec-trical troubleshooter and installer.

Working with jets (F86's) andother similar craft was a cleardeparture from my stint on a sub-marine. At least I didn’t have toworry about drowning or depthcharges and running silent and run-ning deep.

As an electrician, I worked in thecockpit troubleshooting wiringerrors and panel instruments. Wewere told, and it was demonstrated, that most of the switches were hotand the hydraulic machines wereconnected to the aircrafts’ controlwhich allowed operation of theflight controls. I knew I had to becareful in the cockpit because of theenergized electronic circuits. Forinstance one day with my hand deepin an instrument panel, while wear-ing a metal watch band I accidental-ly laid my arm across two “hot”

Things I have noticed...

From submarines to aircraftposts, it burned the band off my armleaving a third degree circular burnaround my wrist. Two days later, another electrician working in anF86 cockpit, whose work had beencompleted, accidentally hit the wingtank ejection button and blew twowing tanks into the floor as theywere jettisoned crushing them flat. For some reason, which I’ll neverknow, a week later he was promotedto lead foreman. My guess is theyfigured he could do less harm as amanager than as a worker.

North American only stayed inFresno three years after I startedworking there. I was promoted toflight line where I worked on jetsthat were being tested and modifiedafter they had been flown and thebugs worked out. The whole experi-ence was fun and those of us whoworked there felt a kinship with thepilots and the aircraft. During thelast year that I worked for them, wewould receive aircraft with bulletholes and broken windshields, astark reminder that these planes hadbeen flown in combat. It was asobering experience.

North American moved back toLos Angeles in 1958 and I was giventhe opportunity to move with thembut neither my wife nor I wanted togo down south. So guess where Iwent to work for the next threeyears? A grocery store! Instead oftesting electrical instruments I waspunching the Sweda cash register. Ifigured by now I could do anything, just give me a job and pay me well.

If someone wereto ask you, “Whendid God seem mostprofoundly pres-ent?” or “When didGod seem most realto you?” what wouldyou say? Somefolks might remem-ber the birth of their first child.Others might have some mountaintopworship experience come to theirmind. Still othersmay site somebreathtakingencounter withthe beauty ofnature. For me,God seemed asclose as I haveever experienced when I received theLord’s Supper for the first time on theday of my Confirmation. What comesto your mind?

If we think about Who God is,though, and if we consider His attrib-utes, we might come to a more specif-ic concept of how and when Godcomes close to people. Since God isholy and just and, therefore, has azero-tolerance-level for sin andunrighteousness, He cannot comeanywhere near anybody, who is notperfect. That’s really bad news foranybody who falls short of perfection!

If, however, a person’s unright-eousness and imperfection isremoved, then God is no longerunable to come near that person.

When was God most real to you? That’s what the sacrificial systemmodeled for God’s Old Covenantpeople: imputed righteousness, which came to them by trusting Godfor their forgiveness. The psalmistasserted, “As far as the east is fromthe west, So far has He removed ourtransgressions from us” (Psalm103:12). Their righteousness camethrough trusting that only by God’sloving kindness could it be possiblefor their sins to be forgiven and forGod to come anywhere near them. The Bible explains that even thoughAbraham was not perfect, he

“believed theLORD, and theLORD countedhim as righteousbecause of hisfaith” (Genesis15:6).

Today weknow the rest of the story, to whichthe Old Testament sacrificial systempointed: the innocent and perfectLamb of God being sacrificed on aFriday on the altar of Calvary’s cross, where the forgiveness of sins waspurchased for all of mankind. That’swhere all peoples’ sins were removedto. That’s where our forgivenesscomes from. That’s where the wallthat separated us from God wasdestroyed. That’s where God is veryreal! And it’s through the blood ofJesus, shed on that cross, that Godcomes close to us.

Convenient way to make child support paymentsParents can now pay their child support in cash at thousands of MoneyGram

locations throughout California. Previously, parents paying cash could only do soby visiting the Bakersfield child support branch. Those who stand to benefit themost by paying cash through MoneyGram are the self-employed, seasonal work-ers and those who don’t engage in traditional banking.

There are approximately 6,200 MoneyGram locations in California that providebill payment services. To make a payment through Moneygram, parents will needtheir personal Participant ID Number and the group “Receive Code 14630.”MoneyGram charges child support customers a $1.99 convenience fee. For many, that is less than the cost of the gas needed to drive to the child support office.Payments can take up to three days to post, so parents are advised to plan accord-ingly. For more information, call Phyllis Nance at 661-868-8480 or [email protected].

Weekend brings opportunitiesKern River Outdoors

Matt FreemanCourier Columnist

Well it’s here!Whiskey Flat week-end is upon us, andI am excited. Theweather looks like itis going to be beau-tiful and the valleyis nice and green. It's going to be agreat weekend!

Whiskey Flats itself of course is agreat outdoor activity but for theintrepid out-doorsman in usall, there are acouple opportu-nities that can beeasily takenadvantage ofduring thisweekend of festivities in our outdoors.

First of all, if you like fishing, wellthe Kern River is in great shape thistime of year and it is stocked rightbefore Whiskey Flat, those fish aregoing to be hungry and it is greatfishing right there in Kernville Park. How do I know this? I do it all thetime! Nothing like giving the kidssome money to go ride the carnivalrides and bring you back a lemonadeand popcorn while you sneak downto the river and catch a couple oftrout. Life is good!

The Kern River above Kernville isgreat fishing this time of year too andsomething the locals don’t share thatmuch. During Whiskey Flats, youbasically have the river to yourself! It’s

a perfect opportunity to stop in andsee the sights in Kernville for a cou-ple hours then head north with yourfamily and some fishing poles tocatch some trout in peace and tran-quility. The campgrounds are usuallypretty full but almost everybody is inKernville and no one is fishing!

Another great thing to do thistime of year in our valley, that youcan do concurrently with WhiskeyFlat Days, is mountain bike riding.Actually, that is one of the best waysto tour Whiskey Flat. And right out-

side of Kernvilleare several goodmountain biketrails, one up atthe end ofBurlando Roadthat leads to BullRun Creek.Another great

spot is riding around down at theEdison Hydro Plant, a lot of little sideroads and paths there. Out by the air-port on the backside of the lake thereare trails all over the place for somegreat mountain bike and dirt bikeriding.

In years past we have had snow, rain and one year even fog forWhiskey Flat Days, but this year islooking to be absolutely beautifulwith temps in the 70s and clear skiesand no wind. A perfect weekend toget outside here in the Kern RiverValley!

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Big Hero 6” (PG) -- This Disney

animated feature takes us to thefuturistic fictional metropolis of SanFransokyo, where a bunch of techwhizzes (and their inflatable robot)build themselves into superheros tobattle a Kabuki-masked supervillain. The heart and soul of the super-group is 14-year-old Hiro (voiced byRyan Potter) and a doughy, adorable robot caregiver namedBaymax (Scott Adsit).

It hits all the notes you’d expectfrom a Disney super-adventure -- akid for the kids to relate to, a goofyshow-stealing sidekick, quirky sup-porting characters, vulnerable feel-ings and dazzling animated actionsequences. While the characters areloosely adapted from a lesser levelof the Marvel Comics world, thisworld fits in with genre demandswhile still bringing a refreshingenergy to the screen.

“Whiplash” (R) -- A giftedyoung jazz drummer gets pushed tohis furthest edges by a mercilessmusic teacher so sadistic and sin-gle-minded that you’ll be scared ofhim too. Andrew (Miles Teller) is aprodigy behind a drum kit, and he’sdetermined to reach the highestlevel at his musical conservatory. He catches the attention of theschool’s most feared and respectedteacher, Terrence (J.K. Simmons),who immediately starts with themindgames, working Andrew to

the bone and changing him to thecore.

The performances are downrightamazing. The central pair have sucha dynamic going -- are theyteacher-and-student, tormentor-and-prisoner, father-and-son? J.K.Simmons has, until this point, beenknown for bit dad roles and insur-ance commercials. Now he's buriedin awards from this outstandingbreakthrough role.

“Beyond the Lights” (R) -- Thistouching romance follows Noni(Gugu Mbatha-Raw), a pop singerabout to take over the charts withher astounding voice and full-scalesex appeal. Trouble is, stardom andobjectification aren’t all Noni wastold they would be by her overbear-ing stage mom (Minnie Driver). When things seem darkest andNoni can’t take it anymore, she’srescued by a hunky, virtuous copnamed Kaz (Nate Parker). Evenwhen the plot wears thin, the per-formances and directing give itgravity it needs.

Health insurance availability, Part 3Health Insurance Matters

Harry P. ThalCourier Columnist

This is the lastweek to enroll ineither an individualor family health planfor most people thisyear. The 2015Annual Enrollmentends February 15.Most Americanswho are not covered by (Medi-Cal orMedicare) or an employer sponsoredprogram will be paying penalties fornon-compliance. There are excep-tions. See my January 23 Couriercolumn for details.

Last week I discussed programsfor the disabled and those over age65. By design, Medicare was neverintended to cover everything, and ithas out of pocket expenses. Only thevery wealthy can afford to have justMedicare, as the deductibles and co-pays can be financially devastating.

Health care is expensive, andhealth insurance is the financial vehi-cle to pay those bills.

With Medicare, there are basicallythree ways to cover the out-of-pock-et expenses. You can “self insure.”You can purchase a MedicareSupplement (at 65 costing about $150a month in Kern County) or “assign”your Medicare benefits to a privateinsurance company by enrolling in aMedicare Advantage HMO plan. Most Medicare HMO plans in KernCounty have a $0 monthly premium, but you will have some restrictions.

The Medicare Supplement is thefavored plan for most people. “Plan

F” being the most popular. WithPlan F, you may go to any doctor, any hospital or other medicalprovider, and as long as they are aMedicare provider, all the Medicaredeductibles and co-pays are coveredin full from the very first dollar; nomaximum!

The Medicare Advantage HMOplan has two major cost factors. Forsome services, there is an out ofpocket “Co-Pay,” normally fairly rea-sonable, like $200 for an ambulance,or $150 per day for the first five daysin the hospital. The other cost is whyI shy away from the HMO. It is time.It takes longer to get an appointment.

The Medicare HMO can only bepurchased between October 15 andDecember 7 during the AnnualEnrollment Period (AEP), or for spe-cial circumstance. Turning 65, loss ofemployer coverage and moving to anew area are some exceptions.Special Needs Plans (SNPs) are avail-able year round if you are receivingMedi-Cal benefits or have certainmedical conditions.

Medicare Supplements are avail-able year round. However, theseplans do ask medical questions andthe insurance company has the rightto turn down your application if con-dition or history have negative fac-tors. It is guaranteed issue for thoseturning 65, losing group coverageand other exceptions.

Feed the soil - not the plantThe Garden Guy

Paul Vander WerfCourier Columnist

Question:Should wood ashbe used in the gar-den? Answer: Theanswer is... well, itdepends. In gener-al, ash is beneficialas a source forpotassium and a number of minornutrients. Used in moderation (fiveto 10 pounds per 100 square feet),wood ash from the home fireplaceor wood stove is an option that thehome gardener should consider.

California’s Integrated WasteManagement Act of 1989 set themandate to divert waste from com-munity landfills. That year, nearly abillion pounds of wood ash wereproduced in California. Since then, researchers have been evaluatingnot only how wood ash can be usedin agriculture but how to preventharm in the environment. Four keyconcerns identified include 1. Usesafety equipment when handlingash, 2. Avoid movement of ash byair or water, 3. prevent grazing live-stock from having direct contactwith ash and 4. Be cautious of heavymetal concentrations. A particularlyimportant point regarding theresponsible use of wood ash in KernValley is to keep the ash from con-taminating waterways and livestockgrazing areas.

The home gardener should alsomake sure to avoid allowing germi-

nating seeds or new plants’ roots tocontact freshly spread ash.

Thoroughly wash off any ash thatgets on foliage and keep ash a fewinches away from plants. Ideally, allow at least three weeks afterapplying ash before planting.

The biggest concern when usinga soil amendment such as wood ashis the effect on the soil’s pH level.Wood ash will increase the pH level(make the soil more alkaline), whichcould be disadvantageous if used inexcess or for soil with acid-lovingplants such as azaleas, camellias andblueberries. Do not apply wood ashto soil that already has a pH level of7.0 or greater.

Ash can sometimes exceed a pHof 12.5, which can be classified ashazardous waste under California’sHazardous Waste Act, so do notcarelessly store large amounts ofash.

Note that this article does notaddress air quality burn restrictions. Please consult with a local authorityif you have any concerns aboutusing a wood stove or fireplace inyour area.

To learn more about gardening, contact the Kern River GardenGroup on Facebook or attend ameeting held at 10 a.m. the secondTuesday of each month (locations tobe announced). The March 10meeting will be held at the KernvilleChamber conference room.
