478 BC: Building of city wall after Persian invasion – funerary sculptures built into the wall
The area outside the city walls on both sides of the roads became the official cemetery of the city. State graves, for notable statesman and warriors, were built near Dipylon Gate
The Sacred Way to Eleusis was an important part of the area
Pompeion: where the nobility of Athens would eat the sacrificial meat for the Panathenaic festival
