CONSUMPTIONWalls need two layers of Kerafiber at the minimum: approx. 0.6 l/m² = thickness of dry Kerafiber coat 0.4 mm. Floors need two layers of Kerafiber at the minimum: approx. 0.8 l/m² = thickness of dry Kerafiber coat 0.5 mm.

WORKING CONDITIONSThe temperature of air and construction during the water-proofing work must be +15–25 °C. Conditions should be stable (no humidity and temperature variations) during the work to avoid dimension alterations in materials. Underfloor heating is turned off 2 days before the work commences and brought up to its operation temperature gradally in stages after approx. one week after grouting. Drying of Kiilto Kerafiber can be speeded up by effective ventilation, but do not use extra heaters.

TOOLSRoller, sprayer, brush, flat plastic trowel and trimming knife. Tools and fresh stains are washed with water. Dry stains can be removed only mechanically.

KIILTO KERAFIBER: PRIMING RIGHT

AREA OF APPLICATIONWaterproofing system for walls and floors in wet areas when using ceramic tiles. It is not recommended for areas constantly under water, such as swimming pools. Thermal resistance of the dry Kerafiber coat is < +70 °C (important when installing wood heated stoves). Compatible with Kiilto Keramix system, for example you can use Kiilto Kerafiber for walls and Keramix for floors.

SUBSTRATESuitable substrates are strong aggregate base or construc-tion board that is tested and approved for wet area appli-cations. The surface must correspond to a wood floated surface that is free from old coatings, cement skin, dust and other impurities that might reduce adhesion. Check that the humidity of concrete substrate is max. 90 % RH. Ground supported floors must have a barrier layer to prevent the ris-ing damp. Uneven floors are sanded and/or smoothed with cement based Kiilto smoothing compound. When install-ing underfloor heating in renovated floors, we recommend Kiilto Lattialämmitystasoite DF screed over cables and for building falls. Underfloor heating is always installed under the waterproofing membrane according to manufacturers’ instructions. Prepare the surface prior to levelling according to separate instructions. Always ensure that the construction is suitable for waterproofing and tiling.

REINFORCINGCorners, pipe inlets and junctions and seams of different bases and background wall materials are reinforced and sealed with Kiilto Nurkkavahvikenauha (tape width in cor-ners 10 cm or 20 cm, in joints 10 cm). In wall-floor junc-tions the tape is lifted 5 cm up on the wall. For internal and external corners and pipe inlets you can use pre-fabricat-ed reinforcing pieces. Floor drain is reinforced with two Kiilto Lattiakaivovahvike (30 cm x 30 cm) or self-adherent Kiilto Kaivolaippa. Two Lattiakaivovahvike sheets are placed crossed onto each other. The floor drain must have a ten-sion ring recommended by the floor drain manufacturer. The junction between the ring and the floor drain is sealed with Kiiltofix Masa. Reinforcements are always bed to wet Kerafiber with a roller, brush or flat plastic applicator by rubbing. Kerafiber is applied over the reinforcements to ensure thorough wetting. See that the reinforcements lap each other at least 30 mm. Self-adherent Kiilto Kaivolaippa is placed on a primed surface. The compatibility of Kiilto Kerafiber with the most common floor drains on the market has been tested and approved. If in doubt about the com-patibility, contact our technical support or the floor drain supplier.

Page 3: KERAFIBER - pim.kiilto.com2F4%2F2%2Fb...heating is turned off 2 days before the work commences and brought up to its operation temperature gradally in stages after approx. one week

1. Prime dry and dustless walls with Kiilto Keraprimer (dilute with water 1:1). Allow to dry for minimum 1 hour before starting waterproofing.

2. Stir Kiilto Kerafiber always before use. Reinforce corners, joints, junctions of differ-ent background materials with Kiilto Nurk-kavahvikenauha tape. Bed the tape into wet Kerafiber and apply a second layer of waterproofing membrane over the tape to ensure thorough wetting.

3. Use pre-fabricated Kiilto pipelet rein-forcements or cut Kiilto Nurkkavahvikenau-ha tape to correct size. Bed reinforcements into wet Kerafiber and apply a second layer of Kerafiber over the reinforcement to en-sure thorough wetting.

2. Reinforce corners, joints, junctions of different materials with Kiilto Nurkkavah-vikenauha. Bed Nurkkavahvikenauha into wet Kerafiber and apply a second layer of Kerafiber over the tape to ensure thorough wetting. For internal and external corners you can use pre-fabricated corner pieces.

3a. The floor drain can be sealed with two crossed Kiilto Lattiakaivo reinforcement sheets. Place one sheet on the floor and brush Kiilto Kerafiber over it. Place another sheet crosswise over the first one and brush over with Kerafiber.

3b. Apply Kerafiber around the floor drain to approx. 40 cm x 40 cm area and turn the double reinforcement sheet over the drain. If using a separate sealing flange, contact our technical support or consult your drain supplier for instructions.

4. Roll Kerafiber over the entire floor and al-low to dry for minimum 2 h/colour change.

4. Roll Kerafiber over the entire wall and let dry at least 2 h/colour change. On board substrates you can place reinforcement fab-ric over screw heards or plaster them with e.g. Kiilto LW Valmistasoite plaster.

5. Roll a second coat of Kerafiber and let dryfor 6-12 h/colour change before tiling. Check the thickness of the Kerafiber layer. Add Ker-afiber on thin and/or porous spots and allow to dry properly. The total consumption of Kerafiber should be for minimum 0.6 l/m² and layer thickness 0.4 mm.

6. Start tiling from the second row from the floor, at least 10 cm above the floor. Fix the tiles with Kiilto Superfix DF, Kiilto Saneeraus-laasti or Kiilto Kerapid Pikasaneerauslaasti.

1. Prime dry and dustsless floor with Kiilto Keraprimer (dilute with water 1:1).

5. Roll a second layer of Kerafiber and allow to dry 6-12 h/colour change before tiling. Check the thickness of the Kerafiber layer. Add Kerafiber on thin and/or porous spots and allow to dry properly. The total con-sumption of Kerafiber should be for mini-mum 0.8 l/m2 and layer thickness 0.5 mm.

6. After drying cut a round hole for the floordrain: ensure that the diameter of the hole isat least 40 mm smaller than the diameter of the floor drain, so that the rim of the Kerafiber layer streches over the seal in the drain (fol-low drain manufacturer’s instructions). The thickness of the Kerafiber layer around the floor drain should be for minimum 1.2 mm.

7. Press a suitable tension ring in position. Cut off excess Kerafiber, if coming out un-der the ring.

8. Alternatively the floor drain can be sealed with a self-adherent Kiilto Kaivola-ippa reinforcement. Place Kiilto Kaivolaippa on dry, primed surface and press carefully in position. Cut a hole to it according to drain manufacturer’s instructions and press the tension ring in position.

9. Kiilto Kaivolaippa has reinforcements on two sides, apply Kiilto Kerafiber on them.Another two sides must be reinforced withreinforcement tape. See that the tape over-laps Kaivolaippa for minimum 30 mm.

10. Apply Kiilto Kerafiber over the entire floor area and around the tension ring.

11. Seal the junction between the tension ring and floor drain with Kiiltofix Masa. KiiltoKaivolaippa’s compatibility with most floordrain types is tested and approved.

12. Fix floor tiles with Kiilto Superfix DF, Kiil-to Saneerauslaasti or Kiilto Kerapid Pika-sa-neerauslaasti.

13. Apply Kiilto Lattiasaumalaasti or Kiilto Saumalaasti with a rubber trowel and press it in the joints. Wait for 15-30 minutes and wash away excess grout with a sponge. Use a well-wrung sponge, since too much wa-ter can discolour the joints. Wall joints’ pro-file can be finished by using a thick electric wire.

14. Wipe away any excess tile grout from corners and seal them as well as pipeline inlets with Kiilto Saniteettisilikoni. Wait until the next day before using the new bath-room. If having underfloor heating, wait a week until bringing the system up to its operating temperature gradually.
