Keppelite I August 2009

While the world continues to be divided in

opinion as to whether the worst of the recession

is over, one thing remains certain - there will still

be a market. And while volatility still resides in the

current business landscape, competition keeps

getting stiffer and customers have come to expect

solutions to be faster, better and cheaper.

Keeping our relevance will mean staying ahead,

not just of our competitors but also our customers.

With Keppel’s businesses spanning 35 countries

today, the need for a confident, competent and

competitive workforce has never been more

pressing.

We also need a curious people, who are driven to

learn, unlearn and relearn so that we can grow

beyond our personal and corporate borders. This

explains why Keppel continues to provide

opportunites for training and development, in

good times or through change.

Overseas customers are our earnings mainstay. This

compels us to continually build on our knowledge

of their businesses, our competitors, the market

and even the socio-political developments in

respective countries. It is not clichéd to say that

knowledge is power. There can be no resting on

track record or even relationship. We have to make

it our business to continually learn and relearn to

keep ahead and add value to our customers.

Whether YouTube or Twitter, Myspace or Facebook,

the ‘world wide web’ has enabled the impact of

global news and events to hit home closer and

faster.

We cannot afford to be ostriches hemmed in by

tunnel vision, when a proliferation of ‘tools’ and

technology are available to us. We can learn to

overcome our fears and exercise sound stewardship

to leverage the use of such new resources.

Knowledge is incremental. We must make time to

read, to research, to exchange and to integrate

information. We need to apply what we have

learnt, for knowledge is of no value unless it is put

into practice, and more importantly, shared within

the organisation.

Knowledge is not only empowering, it is rewarding.

The acquisition and synthesis of knowledge not

only open up new possibilities and opportunities

but can bring about new excitement and re-

energise us.

We can give the excuses of information overload,

that we have no time or it is just all too

overwhelming. But remember when we stop

pursuing knowledge, we stop making progress.

There is sustained growth indemand for fossil fuels led byemerging markets withdemand growth driven byemerging countries such asAsia, the Middle East andLatin America, amongothers.

With declining reserves, newsources of oil need to bedeveloped. Substantialinvestments are required tomeet long-term energydemand and national andinternational oil companiesare still investing in fielddevelopment.

Q. WHAT IS KEPPEL’SOUTLOOK FOR OILPRICES?Oil prices have risen in

Deep insightsIn an interview with Money Mind’s Deputy Editor Mr Frederick Lim, CEO of KeppelOffshore & Marine Mr Tong Chong Heong shared his take on the offshore horizon.Keppelite reproduces extracts of the interview:

1H 2009 to about US$65-70per barrel/day, on morepositive signs of recoveryin the major economies.Viability of deepwaterprojects depends on mediumto long-term oil price anddrilling rates.

However, building adeepwater rig is morecomplex and costly than ashallow water rig. Muchdepends on the balancebetween prevailing oil pricesand the rates offered todrilling contractors, such thatthe figures make sense for oilcompanies.

Time frame for fielddevelopment also is a lotlonger and costlier fordeepwater. As such, oilcompanies must take alonger term view on oilprices and is less dependenton short-term oil prices.

Q. IS THEREDOWNWARD PRESSUREON MARGINS AT THISTIME?We do not expect adownward pressure. Weexperienced good operatingprofit margins for 2Q09– due to accumulatedexperience building repeatedprojects and savings in manhours required.

Ice may have been Achilles’heel for Titanic, but not sofor Toboy.

One of Asia’s first twoicebreakers, Toboy is a multi-purpose icebreaking supplyvessel built by KeppelSingmarine for LUKOIL-K a l i n i n g r a d m o r n e f t(LUKOIL). She was deliveredin August 2008 anddeployed to support theoperations at LUKOIL‘sVarandey Terminal.

From 16-21 June 2009,Toboy underwent rigoroustestings following an ice trialprogramme developed byFinnish Consultant, ILS andendorsed by the RussianMaritime Register ofShipping (RMRS).

The trials were conducted onice sheets ranging from0.7 m to 1.4 m thick at theKara Sea. In comparison tothe Barents Sea, whichreceives relatively warmcurrents from the Atlantic, the Kara Sea is much colderand can remain frozen forover nine months in a year.

Sea-ing is believingIn July, Straits Times journalist Tessa Wong gamely took up Keppel’s invitation totry her hand at sailing. She learnt to live onboard a boat while participating acompetent crew course ran by Keppel Bay Sailing Academy (KBSA). Sharingher sailing experience through the online paper’s blogs in two parts, Keppelitereproduces excerpts of her adventure.

From L to R: Uniquely Singapore skipper Jim Dobie with crew members Tan Pek Yew, Lisa Walden, Karan Teo, Nicole Ho and Bart Kregersman

ALL AT SEAWith a month to go untilthe start of this year’sClipper Race, a group ofSingaporeans are nowbattling the cold winds ofEngland as they gear up forthe round-the-world sailingtournament.

I’m here to get a taste ofwhat an ordinary ClipperRace participant hasbeen learning. Admittedly,Singapore’s sunny weather isvery different from the muchharsher conditions thatthey’ll be facing, but you’vegot to start somewhere, right?

My vessel of choice: theVenture, one of two 40 ftkeelboats that KBSA uses toconduct its courses. We setsail from the Marina atKeppel Bay. My classmateson this beginner crew courseare a motley (but jovial) crewof an American, a German,a Frenchman and a fellowSingaporean.

Our instructor, Lynnette, starts things off by showingus the ropes – literally. Welearn what the myriad of

ropes are used for onboard, the different parts of theboat, how the sails work, andvarious protocols.

Then we try our hand atsailing – but the wind is slow, and we putter at 2 knots formost of the afternoon. Ourhopes of getting a strongwind, and some action, arefulfilled soon enough. As wehead for Indonesian waters,a rainstorm homes in on us.I wonder why exactly anyonewould sign up for somethinglike this.

But it gradually becomesclear to me, despite thepouring rain.

Like all outdoor activities, sailing feels very much aprimal sport which, whenpitching man against thenatural elements, imparts acontradictory sense of bothinsignificance and power. You may just be a tinyspeck bobbing on the ocean, but you’re miraculouslyharnessing weather andwater to reach yourdestination.

It is also a sport that’scuriously driven by thephysics of aesthetics. Whenit comes to harnessing thewind, a perfect curve iseverything: the right sailshape at the right angle tothe wind is essentialfor maximising power.Somehow I find this balance

of science, art and sportoddly appealing. And there’sanother unlikely thing that Ilove: its sounds. It’s a musicallanguage of its own, singinga centuries-old tune ofvoyage and adventure.

Put them all togetherwith the excitement thatcomes with unpredictableweather, and I see whysomeone may want to dothis round the world fornearly a year.

SMOOTH SAILINGON NATIONAL DAYA group of sailors in Englandcelebrated Singapore’sbirthday by unfurling familiarlittle red and white flagsand posing for a photo. Theyare a group of Singaporeansand Singapore residentsrepresenting the country inthe Clipper Race, a round-the-world sailing competition.

Like them, I got to celebrateon a boat too, albeit muchcloser to home. After fourlong days at sea, my sailingclass received a treat onSunday – we got to watchthe parade fireworks justoutside Marina Bay.

Off we went that evening tothe Marina Barrage. AsApache helicopters dronedoverhead, we nosed our wayinto the herd of party boatsfloating a good two milesfrom the platform. It was theclosest anyone could get

The threat of danger persiststo varying degrees in our dailylives, no less in any endeavourof the extraordinary.Accomplished mountaineerand photographer StefenChow knows this fact andembraces safety as a corevalue in his professional andpersonal pursuits.

It is little surprise thatStefen, who had successfullyclimbed Mount Everest, sees

parallels between hismountaineering experienceand the daily safety journeytaken by thousands ofworkers who make KeppelShipyard a safe workplaceeveryday.

Stefen came to learn thiswhen he was commissionedt o p h o t o g r a p h y a n ddocument Keppel Shipyard’sSafety Excellence 2010initiative.

He said, “The assignmentbrings together all ofmy experiences as anengineer, a mountaineer anda photographer.

“As a mechanical engineerby training, I was very excitedbecause I have always beenfascinated with howshipyards operate and shipconversions are done. As a

mountaineer, safety was aconcept we lived by. I wascurious how a shipyardwould implement a safetyprogramme down the lineover two years.”

Safety Excellence 2010represents the third andlatest phase in the yard’ssafety enhancement journey.Beginning in 2008, the

programme aims toempower Keppel Shipyard’sentire workforce, includingits contractors, through arange of safety schemes andskills upgrading programmesto create an incident-freeworkplace.

Documenting the projectwas challenging andcomplex. “I was trying tounderstand how the yardcould actually gear up to acertain level of expertise witha workforce of some 14,000employees comprisingdifferent nationalities andfrom such diverse cultures,”Stefen said.

“It was only when I delveddeeper that I discovered theextensive programme tosystematically train eachworker. The programmesenabled each worker to learnand revise different aspectsof safety in the shipyardat different stages ofexperience or specialisation.”

Immersing himself fullyinto the shipyard culture,Stefen spent days andsometimes even weeks in theshipyard, observing theinculcation of the safetymindset at ground level. Hefollowed the employeesaround, sometimes even totheir homes and learninginstitutions where theyupgrade themselves, in orderto better understand whatsafety means to them.

Much like climbing amountain, the many hours oftraining and preparation is avital aspect of ensuring safetydiscipline at every step ofthe way.

Stefen said, “Climbing amountain can sometimestake months. It is importantnot to lose sight of thesafety involved in reachingthe top. Safety is a journeythat requires teamwork, whether on Everest or in theshipyard. We look out forone another and will callout to our team mates ifwe f ind them doingsomething unsafe. This isvery much the same inthe shipyard.”

Having been in the yard fora year, Stefen expressed hisadmiration, “It is a verycomprehensive, mountain-sized effort to devote theextent of resources intomaking the shipyard a saferplace each day. Coming inas an outsider, I am veryimpressed and humbled bywhat I have seen.”

Stefen started his Everestjourney as an engineeringgraduate. Today, he is thespokesperson for Nikon inSingapore and has wonnumerous prestigiousphotography prizes aroundthe world. keppelite

My internship at GCC hasbeen nothing short ofexhilarating. As the Group’svital centre of communicationswith internal and externalstakeholders, the departmentwas constantly buzzingwith activities and offereda plethora of learningopportunities for me.

Not only have I been able todeepen my understandingof the Group’s diversebusinesses, I now realise theimportance of keepingabreast of market andindustry developments.

were to clarify doubts orsimply to satisfy my curiosity.I was very heartened tonote that no question wasdeemed too trivial. Moreover,my colleagues would taketime and effort to share theirknowledge to aid myunderstanding, sometimeseven setting aside their workto assist me.

Working on a variety ofprojects also allowed me tosharpen my communicationskills and enhance my abilityto adapt and be versatile.Apart from gainingconfidence in making publicpresentations, I also pickedup tips on how to brush upmy writing skills.

Particularly, writing forthe Group’s newsletter,Keppelite, I was able to honemy writing skills as I was taskedto craft various features. Itwas challenging initially toadjust my style of writing tofit the nature and needs ofcorporate newsletter articles. However, understanding thecommunication objectives ofdifferent articles helpedme to craft better storiesand features.

Seeing the fruit of my labourin print certainly provided mewith immense satisfaction, especially with the knowledgethat Keppelite is read by ouremployees across some30 countries!

On the creative front, exposure to several eventorganisers and designcompanies has widened myhorizons. Through discussionsand brain-storming sessions, where diverse and innovativeideas were tossed about, Ihave learned to see thingsfrom more perspectives.

Some other highlights of myinternship include theprivilege of emceeing at theKeppel Group Scholarshipaward ceremony, participatingin the tour of FloatingStorage and Offloadingvessel, Ratu Songkhla, andbeing involved in KeppelCorporation’s half-yearfinancial results briefing.

My stint at GCC may havebeen a short one but it hasbenefitted me tremendously, where each day wasbrimming with the unknownpotential of meeting aninteresting person or learningsomething new.

I have also witnessed theembodiment of Keppel’srenowned Can-Do! spirit inthe Keppel family, andlook forward to my nextinternship experience! keppelite
