6 Introduction

43 Location Kenya

Page 7: Kenya Hotel, Restaurant & Entertainment Guide 2010

Welcome to the sixth edition of the KAHC

Hotel, Restaurant & Entertainment Guide.

In 2010 the world’s attention is focused on

the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Unfor-

tunately, the Kenya team, the Harambee

Stars, will not be travelling to the World Cup;

but Kenyans are optimistic that it is only a

matter of time before we see our own boys

at subsequent cup competitions.

The reasoning is simple: Kenyan sportsmen

continue to excel in the world sporting arena.

Remember the Beijing Olympics marathon

winner, Samuel Wanjiru? Well, he did it again

by winning the London and Chicago mara-

thons, beating very strong opposition along

the way. The Kenya rugby sevens team set

the world aflame with a fine display during

the IRB Sevens tournaments last year, while

the steeplechasers continued to collect gold

medals in the athletics circuit.

Back to the 2010 World Cup, Kenya has the

perfect climate for teams to set up training

camps in an environment similar to the

World Cup. This, combined with a host of

tourism activities to relax the mind before

the big tournament, is the reason why

teams must visit Kenya before proceeding

to South Africa. The tourism and hospitality

industry in Kenya is attracting a lot of interest

from foreign and local investors. In Nairobi

alone, 2010 will see the opening of five new

hotels including such international brands

as Crowne Plaza and Radisson Hotels. At

the coast, the Sentindo Group has already

entered the fray by signing a partnership

agreement with the Neptune Group, which

owns four properties at the Kenyan coast and

a few more in the East African region. The

entry of these new players is a testimony to

the confidence that investors, both local and

overseas, have in destination Kenya and we

welcome them to the KAHC family. At our

biennial elections a new team was chosen to

lead the KAHC:

National Chairman

Mr J.S. Vohra (also MD of Sarova Hotels)

National Vice Chairman

Mr Anthony Njaramaba (GM, Milele Beach)

Nairobi Region Chairman

Mrs Faith Githaiga (NAS Airport Services)

Coast Chairman

Mr Titus Kangangi (GM, Sunrise Resort).

I would like to wish them all the best as they

steer KAHC to higher grounds.

Inside this edition you will come across

some new names that have joined KAHC’s

hospitality family and will also find your old

favourite spots to visit.

Page 10: Kenya Hotel, Restaurant & Entertainment Guide 2010

Mercifully, Kenya was spared the worst

ravages of the global economic downturn

in 2009. In fact, the local economy fared

surprisingly well without ever reaching the

heady growth rates enjoyed throughout

2007 and before the post-election turmoil of

early 2008.

Unfortunately, the worldwide recession

came just as Kenya’s tourism industry was

fighting to recover from the dramatic fall

in tourist numbers in early 2008. In spite of

the slowdown, however, visitor arrivals have

shown strong signs of recovery, without quite

returning to their pre-election highs.

There is optimism that 2010 will prove a good

year. The Kenyan shilling remains competitive,

especially when set against the euro.

In early 2009 the hospitality sector welcomed

a 50 per cent reduction in the price of single

and multi-entry visas – a move brokered by

the Ministry of Tourism. At the same time,

a major advertising campaign by the Kenya

Tourist Board, shown on CNN throughout

mid 2009, is also expected to pay dividends

in 2010 in the same way as its earlier series

of TV ads in Europe, which led to a signifi-

cant boost in 2007.

foreign exchange

Alongside horticulture, tea, coffee and remit-

tances from the Kenyan diaspora, tourism

is one of Kenya’s four big foreign exchange

earners and its contribution to the national

economy cannot be overstated. This also

explains the government’s desire to maintain

tourism sector looKs to 2010 with renewed confidence

introDUction

KENyA HOTEL, RESTAURANT & ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE 2010

Page 11: Kenya Hotel, Restaurant & Entertainment Guide 2010

visitor numbers and, perhaps belatedly, to

recognise the key role of tourism in generating

revenue and creating jobs for local people.

Kenya’s favour

Another factor in Kenya’s favour is that its

hospitality industry is not one-dimensional

as in many other destinations. In terms

of accommodation, Kenya is fortunate in

having three distinct products that are only

partly related:

• City centre hotels are concentrated largely

in Nairobi. This sector benefits hugely from

Nairobi’s position as a significant regional and

international business centre and from its

popularity as a host city for some of Africa’s

biggest conferences, shows and events.

KENyA HOTEL, RESTAURANT & ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE 2010

Page 12: Kenya Hotel, Restaurant & Entertainment Guide 2010

• Camps and lodges: In general, these

comprise much smaller properties with

high-end rates. Camps and lodges located in

and around Kenya’s major game parks offer

a product comparable with anywhere else

in Africa, often representing the first safari

experience for many visitors. Stays at camps

and lodges are sometimes combined with

trips to the coast.

• Indian Ocean resorts and hotels: This

sector relies on charter flights, so it is more

susceptible to decisions made outside Kenya.

The coast is divided into three sub-categories:

south coast; north coast and Malindi/

Watamu. Operators in this sector have been

making efforts to enhance its product and to

aim higher in terms of their target clientele.

exPansion

The events of early 2008 and the subsequent

global slowdown have had an impact on

expansion plans for the hotel industry. But

Nairobi remains buoyant and a few new

camps and lodges have come on stream.

Despite the recent opening of properties such

as Tribe, at Village Market, room capacity

in Nairobi has remained in short supply, with

correspondingly high rates – although some

major new hotel projects are close to comple-

tion. Two executive-class hotels due to come

on stream in 2010 are the five-star, 156-room

Sankara, in Westlands, and the 162-room

Crowne Plaza, in Upper Hill. These will help to

underline Nairobi’s attractiveness as a place to

do business or to hold a major conference.

Waterhole

The 134-room Ole-Serini, on busy Mombasa

Road, close to Jomo Kenyatta International

Airport, was set to join them in late 2009,

its opening having been delayed by about

12 months. The hotel’s big selling point is

that, uniquely, it has views over a waterhole

within Nairobi Game Park. A major new hotel

development is planned for Loita Street and

the international airport is also scheduled to

get its first hotel.

hoteliers

It has been a different story at the coast,

where hoteliers have simply had to work hard

to keep their properties open. On a positive

note, however, a growing number of charter

flights have been returning to Mombasa,

which as a destination relies heavily on the

package market. During the July and August

peak season of 2009 – there are two peak

seasons at the coast – rooms were difficult

to find at some properties. Coast hoteliers

were forecasting more than 20 charter flights

a week from November 2009 onwards for

the coming ‘winter’ season and were looking

forward to a return to 2007 occupancy levels.

Aberdare Safari Hotels are steeped in history,

with an unparalleled ambience close to

nature. From Treetops, famously associated

with the British Royal Family, to the serene

beauty of outspan, which enchanted lord

Baden-Powell, founder of the Scouting

movement, to Shimba, located in the heart

of the only remaining coastal rainforest in

East Africa, where the rare and endangered

sable antelope can be viewed, Aberdare Safari

Hotels promise an experience to remember.

TreeToPs

The legendary Treetops, where Princess

Elizabeth woke up one morning as Queen of

England, is engaged in a conservation initia-

tive, ‘Return the Bush’, in conjunction with

the Kenya Wildlife Service. This four-year

project began in May 2007 and involves the

rehabilitation of 125 hectares of Aberdare

National Park. Visitors to Treetops will benefit

tremendously from this initiative and so will

4 million residents of Kenya’s capital city who

depend on the area’s water catchment.
