Pilot’s Mission: The Focal Point of Our Clubs’ Service

The mission of PI is to transform communities by: developing youth, providing service and education, and uplifting families. As you

fulfill and expand your plans of work, frequently ask yourselves how you are transforming your community. When you catch

yourselves doing good work, nominate your club and your members for awards to come in the spring, emphasizing how your

community is responding to your efforts. I like this quote: The bad news: Time flies. The good news: You’re the pilot.* This writer

had no thought of our organization, but his words sure do fit. Time can get away from us unless we plan well, use our talents and

focus on moving forward in a positive way. We are the Pilots, through thick or thin.

In a recent conference call with President Shannon Clegg, our Executive Committee, and other governors we learned that the

website will be revamped again, starting from scratch. A new webmaster is redesigning it, aiming for an early 2016 restart. They

have heard our plea for help regarding volunteers and a task force is working to define volunteer hours, what counts as volunteer

hours, and how to report hours. We now have 351 clubs and 7,932 members—277 more since July. Of 12 requests submitted for

Pick Me Up grants in the first quarter, five were granted. Remember: you may resubmit un-granted requests for up to $200 but

may receive only one grant per year. Download the newest manual from the website; find application forms at the end. If you

have questions about Portalbuzz, ask Emily Milton before December. She and her husband are moving away. The EC visited our

International Convention site in Montreal and found it wonderful. Set aside July 4-9 for Council of Leaders and Convention, and

get your passports soon.

Fall colors kickstart fall frenzies. It seems we schedule more things in October than in any other month. That lets us roll into

sports, Thanksgiving, Christmas, hibernations, snow, family visits. Take your enthusiasm for Pilot wherever you go and invite great

people to join our transforming group.

us to count our blessings. Eric Hoffer

Dear Pilots,

As Thanksgiving approaches, I am reminded of the things that

I hold dear. One of the things I am thankful for is the friendships

I have made through Pilot. You are all so very special

in everything that you do to make a difference in the lives of

the people in our communities. You do make a difference and

I am thankful and proud to have each of you in my life.

A very special thank you to the Pilot Club of Charleston for the

fantastic job they did hosting the Fall Workshop and to all of the

Pilots who were able to attend.

I am looking forward to visiting the Millennium Pilot Club, the

Pilot Club of Dayton, and the Pilot Club of Zanesville in November.

I still have a few appointee positions to fill for next year. If you are

interested in volunteering, please let me know.

In Friendship & Service,

Jackie

Chaplain’s Column

In a few weeks we will celebrate Thanksgiving, which has been celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November since 1841. It's a time when we will likely enjoy a wonderful meal with family and friends. We will laugh and cry, share what's happened since we were last together, and eat too much. Many will decide what time to get up on Friday morning to be first in line for "Black Friday" deals. No matter what we do, it will be a fun-filled day.

We also need to give thanks for all that we have every day, not just on Thanksgiving. No matter our circumstances, there's always something good about our lives. I spend a lot of time online looking for poems, stories, or quotes for my messages. This month I found a poem (by an unknown author) entitled Be Thankful. It says what I feel.

Be thankful that you don't already have everything you desire.

If you did, what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don't know something. For it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times. During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations. Because they give you opportunities

for improvement. Be thankful for each new challenge.

Because it will build your strength and character. Be thankful for your mistakes.

They will teach you valuable lessons. Be thankful when you're tired and weary

Because it means you've made a difference. It's easy to be thankful for the good things.

A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks.

GRATITUDE can turn a negative into a positive. Find a way to be thankful for your troubles

and they can become your blessings.

Happy Thanksgiving, Pilots!

Gale

PEARLS FROM...

Peggy Benton, ECR

As we have in years past, Pilot International will sponsor International

Care and Kindness Week, the second week of November (Nov. 11-17).

While Pilot already focuses on acts of support and kindness for caregivers

through our Pick-Me-Ups, this week provides a special opportunity to

show how small acts of kindness can change a person’s day, a person’s

life, or even the world. How can you participate? For this week, make a

point of engaging in random acts of kindness. Open a door for someone.

Pay for a stranger’s coffee or meal. Let the person behind you go first.

How can your club participate? Make a point of doing a Pick-Me-Up or

two, or maybe even one each day. Make a meal for the staff at a rehab

facility or the guests at a Ronald McDonald House. Take cookies or

snacks to a local firehouse, police station, or the 911 dispatchers. Read to

preschool children or kindergartners. Finally, we can all participate by

paying attention to each other. Put a basket on the dinner table, and

make certain everyone puts their phone in it. Make one meal a day an

electronics-free meal, without phones, tablets, television, or other

distractions.

Gratitude. For many of us who live in the United States, it is the focus of

the month of November. Many places around the world celebrate a

Thanksgiving Day, including the United States, Canada, and Japan. It is a

time to celebrate our good fortune, the blessings we have received, and,

historically, a successful harvest. What better way to express gratitude,

and celebrate our good fortune, than to be kind to others? And what

better time to truly focus on being kind and showing how much Pilots

care than during International Care and Kindness Week?

Don’t forget to record your club’s acts of kindness and submit them for

publication, in The Pilot Log or on Facebook. And if you haven’t applied

for your passport, please do. You’ll need it to travel to Montreal, Canada,

for the 2016 Pilot International Convention and Leadership Conference,

July 6-9 at Le Centre Sheraton Montreal. Room rate is $162 CAN and

exchange rates can be found at http://www.xe.com/.

Rejoignez-nous, s’il vous plait. (Join us, please.)

What’s Up With

KOW Anchors?

Shannon Hill,

District Anchor Coordinator

Millennium Pilot Club of Central Ohio What’s happening in Anchor? We have one Anchor Club in our district; it is sponsored by the Pilot Club of St. Albans.

Every year the two clubs work together wrapping gifts at the mall during the holidays. I’m sure we are all very proud

of our Anchors, but there is always room for more! Remember, Anchor Clubs no longer need to be sponsored by a

Pilot Club. If you know of any potential Anchors let them know of this wonderful opportunity. Give them the

website and Facebook page to see what they can be involved in. At our 2015 PI Convention we heard from a current

Pilot and former Anchor member about her years in Anchor —about how it shaped her for leadership in her career

and how priceless the memories are for her. Let’s all be looking for our future leaders and please contact me with

any questions.

ANYBODY NEED A PICK-ME-UP?

Here are some ideas from other Pilots and Anchors

Broadway Night Out

Anchors transformed their school cafeteria into a

fancy restaurant and served dinner to senior citizens

from their community. They dressed as waiters and

waitresses and served the diners. After dessert, the

diners attended the school’s production of Kiss Me,

Kate as the Anchors’ guests.

Tip: Play classical music softly in the background and

add candlelight to set an elegant atmosphere for fine

dining.

Goody Bag Idea: Waiting Room Blues

Families of patients spend endless hours in hospital waiting rooms. An excellent idea for a Pick-Me-Up is a basket that contains a pillow and a small blanket, some fruit and crack-ers, gum or mints, a notepad and pencil, a packet of tissues. And if the waiting family includes children, be sure to put in a kid-level puzzle book or a coloring book and crayons.

On Monday, October 26, 2015, the Pilot Club of Dayton presented two benches to Brookville Nursing Care Center in

memory of Martha Seagraves. At the time of Martha’s death, family and friends donated money to the Pilot Club of

Dayton and this money was used to purchase the bench. Martha was a positive member who believed in and

practiced the Pilot motto: True Course Ever, and the Pilot principles of Friendship and Service.

Martha was actively involved in the Pilot Club of Dayton for 34 years in many of the club’s service projects. She

started several projects. Some programs were: the meal program for Ronald McDonald House, Christmas cookies/

punch for Brookhaven and United Rehabilitation Services, monthly BINGO parties at Brookhaven and BrainMinder

programs at Brookville Schools in kindergarten through second grades.

Martha encouraged everyone to participate and many followed her example. Gloria Ramsey and Martha worked to-

gether in organizing the biggest money making project the club had – making hundreds of pies for sale.

Her love of Pilot aided her in making many friends at home, in the Kentucky-Ohio-West Virginia District and in Pilot

International. She attended many district and international conventions and workshops.

Martha was a great lady and is missed by members of Pilot throughout the organization.

KOW District Fall Workshop

October 3, 2015

GATHERED AROUND THE OL’ CRACKER BARREL

A good time was had by all at the Charleston Civic Center during our 2015 Fall Workshop. One of the highlights was Governor

Greta’s idea to hold an old fashioned “cracker barrel” style discussion about what’s working in our clubs and what isn’t. Here

are some overall points from the topics we touched on:

How to get people to serve as officers...

At each monthly meeting, take time to explain one officer's duties in detail, so members have an idea of what is involved and

will be better able to decide if that position appeals to them

Consider sharing offices between co-officers, especially presidents, to ease the burden for busy members and to help

members who are not yet ready for the entire job get a feel for what is really involved

Get to know your members’ likes and dislikes, their strengths and challenges, so you have an idea of what they might be

good at and might enjoy.

How to orient new members...

Have a specific orientation meeting—perhaps even in a member’s home so it’s less formal—and spend the entire meeting

explaining who you are and what you do, and answering new members’ questions in a relaxed, non-judgmental atmosphere

Assign each new member a seasoned member as a mentor. Encourage them to meet one-on-one outside of the club’s

monthly meeting to help the new member learn about the club and feel more comfortable

Invite new members to sit in on parts of your board meetings to give them a picture of what and how decisions are made

and what’s expected of the club, as a part of PI

How to record volunteer hours...

Pass around a sign-on sheet at each meeting, to make sure your club—and individual members—get credit for what they

have done. Be sure to post all the hours on the PI website, of course

Remind members that hours must be for projects that are part of the club’s Plan of Work in order to be counted by PI

We didn’t solve all of our problems, but the discussion was lively and thoughtful. THANKS TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED.
