Kent School of Architecture A welcome from the school:

“Student Representatives play a vital role in the running of KSA, and their contributions are

invaluable.

Only by hearing about ‘on the ground’ student concerns and questions can we hope to instigate the

changes necessary to improve the experience of every KSA student during their time at Kent.

We look forward to working with you, in partnership, and in particular to help facilitate all the

aspirations articulated in the KU Education Strategy. A better student experience is a win-win for us

School of Arts A welcome from the school:

“The Student Representative role is an important one here at the School of Arts and Key to ensuring

that students get the most out of their time here at the School, but also that we as a School can make

continuous improvements to the student experience.

Becoming a Student Representative enables students to develop and strengthen leadership skills,

connect with School of Arts staff, assist fellow students with having their voice heard, share

experiences and participate in School Committee Meeting and events.

Student Representatives are here to help and support their peers throughout their time studying at

the School of Arts. They are here to provide a link between staff and students, and help students to

get their voice heard.

The School holds Staff Student Liaison Committees once/twice a term. The SSLC meetings are

important channels of communication between School staff and students.

School of Economics A welcome from the school:

“Student Reps play a vital role whith the School of Economics. We have 2 SSLC meetings per term, at

the request of Reps, (Autumn and Spring) in order for students to have time to provide feedback to

the school.

We try to involve Student Reps in a number of events that we run for students, such as the Move On

event for Stage 3 students and the OMR events for Stage 1 and Stage 2 students in the spring term.

This year we would also like to invite the Reps to be part of our induction events so their fellow

students get to know them as early as possible.

We have instigated an internal marketing campaign called #OpinionsToOutcomes which helps to

highlight what changes you as Rpes have been instrumental in making during that year based on

your feedback. To make all Student Reps feel an integral part of the school we provide each Rep with

a free School of Economics hoodie within the autumn term.

We need you, so please put your name forward to help us continually improve the service we provide

to you and your fellow students.”

School of History A welcome from the school:

“In the School of History, we have always been very fortunate in our Student Reps – they have

worked extremely hard to gather the views, thoughts, concerns and questions of our students, and

bring them to the School so we can improve everything we do. Similarly, we have always been able to

rely upon them to give the student perspective on the diverse range of issues we discuss at the

various committees at the School, Faculty and University levels.”

Kent Business School Medway A welcome from the school:

“At KBS Medway we make a significant investment in the development of the student experience,

promoting a positive experience and encouraging student engagement. This is illustrated by the

employment of a Student Experience Executive (a second year KBS student employed by the school

during their placement year). Our Student Representatives also play an important role in promoting

that positive student engagement, working with the Student Experience Executive to create an

effective bridge between the student body and the School. Feedback from Student Reps is welcomed

and sought. In addition to the formal Staff Student Consultative Committee structure, our Student

Reps are consulted on a regular basis on a wide range of issues from student facilities to academic

issues. Any student with an interest in representing their peers and continuing to develop the positive

student experience at KBS should nominate themselves as a prospective Representative.”

School of Politics and International Relations A welcome from the school:

“Thank you for considering taking on the role of student representative for the School of Politics and

International Relations. We really look forward to welcoming you to this pivotal role in our School

structure and look forward to working with you.

A key part of your role will be to sit on the School’s Staff/Student Liaison Committee (SSLC) which

meets twice a term to discuss various issues affecting students. The Committee has the power to

forward issues to other School and University Committees who are able to implement changes. The

committee itself has initiated a number of positive changes at School level. In the last year alone the

SSLC has removed paper module outlines to reduce our environmental impact, hosted the School’s

first ‘Spring Ball’, and developed a successful project plan for the creation of School-based internships

exclusive to PolIR students.

Beyond the SSLC, student reps will be selected to sit on other School committees to help ensure that

your peers are represented in the key operational and strategic decisions we make as a community.

We endeavour to create an open two-way dialogue with our student reps and would encourage you

to come to us outside of meetings to ensure that you can get the most out of your time as a rep.”

School of European Culture and Language A welcome from the school:

“The School of European Culture and Languages (SECL) is one of the University’s key intellectual hubs

where Europe meets the world in the field of Classics, Comparative Literature, Modern Languages,

Linguistics, Philosophy, and Religious Studies. The distinctiveness of the School’s intellectual profile

provides our valued Student Representatives with a unique opportunity to represent their peers on

their programmes of studies, as well as engage with other academic disciplines within the School.

The role of the Student Representative within SECl is characterised by the strong partnership between

our students, academic colleagues and Kent Union. It is a key component of effective student

engagement, ensuring that students have the opportunity to highlight good practice or address any

areas of concern. Indeed, we are proud that our Student Representatives have consistently

contributed to the enhancement of the student experience within SECL for a number of years.

We therefore strongly encourage you to consider becoming a Student Representative within SECL

and look forward to your important contribution to this vital aspect of student life.
