CHAIRMAN’S VIEWROCKY MCMILLAN

A very warm Welcome to Officials and Players from Lydd Town FCHopefully tonight's match is on as writing this on Sunday evening, it is'bucketing' outside.

We have always enjoyed tremendously tight games between our 2clubs and I’m sure tonight will be exactly the same.

For those who are unsure, Lydd is on the coast ( you may wellwonder, why this fixture is taking place midweek) and is famous for itsAirport . I enjoyed a passion for flying some 15 years ago and veryoften took the short trip from Biggin Hill to Lydd Airport in aPiper Cherokee PA28 . Great memories

Back to this evening. We've had a couple of reversals recently. I'msure Woody, will be getting the boys ready for tonight’s performance, which I hope will see us gain vital promotion points

Enjoy the evening

Lydd Town were formed in 1885. Their early matches were played atThe Banks where the cricket ground now lies. Their first trophy successwas in 1909/10 when they beat Icklesham 2-0 to win the Rye CharityCup. Before the First World War Lydd played in the South Eastern(Ashford) League. They moved ground in 1911 to play their matches atThe Rype in the centre of Lydd.

In 1920/21 the club joined the Folkestone and District Junior Leaguewinning it for the first time in 1926/27. In 1921 their colours were changedfrom blue and white to red and green which remain their current colours.

The club suspended activities in 1939 and restarted again in 1946 afterthe war. Considerable success in the league and cups in the yearsfollowing culminating in the league and cup double in 1958/59 saw Lyddmove up to the Kent Amateur League. A new pavilion was built on TheRype in 1961 presented to the town by Alderman Gordon Paine, MBE,for the use of local sports clubs. In 1962/63 their Reserves entered theLeague. In 1969/70 Lydd won the Kent Amateur League for the first timeand retained it the following season. More success in cups followed butit was to be some time before they won the league again.

In 1984/85, after a league re-organisation, Lydd played in PremierDivision East instead of the top Senior Division. The league title waswon that season and with it promotion into the top division. It was in1989/90 that Lydd’s most successful period started. They won theLeague five years in a row, three years in the Eastern Senior Divisionand following the League re-organisation when the Premier Division asit is now known was formed (combining the Eastern and Western clubs)

they won the First Division East two years running. In four of thoseyears the league and cup double was achieved as well as many othercup success. The decision was taken to move up to the Premier Divisionfor the 1994/95 season, despite concern over their facilities not being upto the required standard. Their best finish was runners-up in 1995/96.

The club desperately needed a new ground as their Council ownedfacilities at The Rype were becoming increasingly criticised and theirfuture as a Premier Division club could have been in doubt. A successfulapplication for a lottery grant was made and with the funds the club raisedthey moved to their new ground on the outskirts of the town in 1999/00.World Cup hero George Cohen officially opened the ground, named afterlong serving player, manager and current chairman Pat Lindsey.

Lydd’s most recent successes were in the Kent Intermediate ChallengeShield final in 2000/01 when they defeated Phoenix Sports 1-0 at AshfordTown F.C and in 2002/03 in the Les Leckie Cup Final against MiltonSports at Chatham Town F.C. where they won a penalty shoot-out 5-4following a 2-2 score after extra time.

Things then became difficult for a few seasons and the first team wererelegated from the Premier Division at the end of the 2005/06 season. The first team did however win the Weald of Kent Senior Competition in2007 beating Premier Division Bromley Green 4-2 in the final.

Further relegation followed but the appointment of Manager Dave JohnCock in December 2009 saw the clubs fortunes pick up and in season2010/11 Lydd were runners up in Division Two East. A successfulapplication was made to be a part of the new Step Six League for 2011/12and the Club finished the inaugural season in 12th place. In 2012/13, withDave Smith taking over as manager, Lydd finished 6th and were runnersup to Hollands & Blair in the Invicta League Challenge Trophy, losing 4-3at Homelands Ashford. In season 2013/14 Lydd finished as runners upin the league to Hollands & Blair.

Work has since been carried out on The Lindsey Field which includesthe installation of floodlights, two 50 seater stands, turnstile and fencingto fully enclose the ground. Plans for next season include installation ofpitch drainage.

The U12 Tigers are enjoying a strongstart to their first fullseason in the Tandridge League’s topflight.Unbeaten in theA league until just beforeChristmas, they’recurrently still in both cupcompetitions, scoring 13and conceding just 3 intheir 6 cup games so far.

January has seen the Tigers progress tothe League Challenge Cup semi-finalfollowing a deserved 2-1 victory overBalham Blazers Eagles. They alsobooked their place in the FA LondonCup semi-final, with a 3-1 away winover Westward Boys in East London.

James and Elyon, as manager and coach, have done a terrific job this season instrengthening the squad and ensuring theboys play the game the way it should be.

In turn, the boys haveresponded brilliantly, playingattractive football anddominating the majority oftheir games. They just needto put away a few more oftheir chances to move up to

yet another level.

That’s a problem Pep Guardiola has atMan City with a squad that’s worth over£502 million, so the boys can surely beforgiven for that for a few more games !
