Christmas shopping

Wow, where does the time go? One minute you’re packing them back off to school after the summer hols and then before you know it you’re attending Christmas fairs, nativity plays and wondering what relatives are going where this Christmas.

So season’s greetings to all our readers and a warm welcome to our winter issue of Kent Family magazine.

This time of year is very important to us. We’ve always been strong supporters of local businesses. And Christmas, in particular, is a great

opportunity to boost the High Street and buy locally.

Not only does it keep money in Kent, but small independent shops and businesses maintain the character of our town centres and provide customers with individual service from people who are passionate about what they do.

As always, we aim to bring you a broad range of information. Christmas isn’t just about buying stuff. Family life should be about experiences and spending time together. So, many of our days out and activities feature fun, interesting and educational family events that are low-cost or free.

To all our readers and advertisers – have a wonderful festive season and see you again in 2011!

From all at Kent Family magazine!

Jack and the BeanstalkCentral theatre, Chatham, 10th dec – 2nd JanuaryGet ready for some fi -fi -fo-fun with Jack and the Beanstalk at The Central Theatre, Chatham. Paul Burling, who reached the fi nals of this year's Britain’s Got Talent, will be making a welcome return for his fi fth pantomime. Starring alongside Gillingham-born Phil Gallagher, aka Cbeebies’ Mister Maker, will be Emma Barton fresh from West End stage show Chicago. Days Out

a BlaSt of Sea aIr Whilst winter might not seem like the obvious time to head for the coast. If it’s a crisp, dry day the sea can make a refreshing change from the hussle and bustle of town. Seaside resorts that are often packed in summer, suddenly have easy parking and a tranquility that allows you to fully soak up the boutique shops, cafes and sea air. Whitstable, Broadstairs and Folkstone are all ideal places for a Sunday morning stroll followed by a hot chocolate in a cafe. Visit www.canterbury.co.uk and www.visitthanet.co.uk to fi nd out about local events and attractions. Further afi eld Camber Sands in East Sussex is excellent for kite fl ying followed by a trip to nearby Rye, with its eclectic range of shops and eateries. Or head to historic Hastings for the aquarium, lifeboat museum and amusements.

handS on hIStoryMaidstone Museum and Rochester’s Guildhall Museum are places where history truly does come to life. At Rochester’s Guildhall Museum children can hear, smell and see what life was like in the prison hulk ships that were moored in the Medway, enter Victorian room settings and listen to extracts from Samuel Pepys' diary. At Maidstone Museum visitors can dress in fashions from yesteryear, hear dinosaurs roar and peer at a 2,700 year old Egyptian mummy. Further afi eld is the RAF Spitfi re and Hurricane Memorial Museum at Manston near Ramsgate. Also free of charge, the museum houses two examples of the legendary Spitfi re and Hurricane fi ghter aircraft and hundreds of artefacts relating to the Dambusters. CIneMa dealSCineworld cinemas in Rochester and Ashford both run ‘Movies for Juniors’ – a special Saturday morning screening where tickets are just £1 each. You won’t see the latest blockbuster, but if you missed a fi lm that came out a few months ago then it’s a great way to get the cinema experience without spending a fortune. The added bonus for parents is that there are often no trailers – so you can arrive at the start time and enjoy watching the fi lm straight away. Odeon Cinemas in Maidstone and Chatham Dockside also screen selected 'Odeon Kids' fi lms at weekends which cost £2.50 per ticket with a free ticket for an accompanying adult.

a Walk In the park Experience the changing seasons at some of the many country parks in Kent. Attractions such as Shorne Woods, Capstone Park and Riverside are popular choices. But why not explore some of the less well-known country parks such as Jeskyns near Gravesend. Owned by the Forestry commission, it has a buggy-friendly walkway with wooden play areas dotted around. And a natural ball pool made from thousands of pinecones. White Horse Wood in Detling has an amazing view over the Kent Downs, a fi ve hectare area of open grassland and a wooded area in which over 20,000 trees have been planted. Whilst there you can explore the medieval ruins of Thurnham Castle and traces of an Iron Age settlement. Details, events and activities can be found at www.kent.gov.uk/kentcountryparks

on your BIkeWhether Santa is delivering a new bike this year or you just want to get out for some fresh air, there are plenty of places where children can cycle. www.sustrans.org.uk and www.kent.gov.uk have sections on cycling routes in Kent. Begdgebury Pinetum near Goudhurst has 10km of newly surfaced family cycle track round the 2,000 acre forest. Parking is £7.50 per car. Closer to home there’s Leybourne Lakes and Rochester Riverside Development, which has a 1.5 mile paved walk/cycle way alongside the river.

granddaughter. Says Patricia: “We couldn’t fi nd many places to go during the winter that were interesting and stimulating for our granddaughter as well as family-friendly and fun. So my son came up with the idea of Tiny Town and we began

our research. When we found a 20,000 sq. ft. building behind the KM offi ces in Larkfi eld we realised it would be an excellent location for parents in Maidstone, Medway and Tonbridge. Making it one of the largest indoor play areas in the UK.”

theMed toWnTiny Town is more than just a name – the play area is split into seven zones including a supermarket, hospital, race track and fi re station which together make up the town.

All the areas have plenty of brightly coloured play equipment. And each of the zones features different themes and props to encourge learning through

And for kids and adults they two have state-of-the-art 3G football pitches, located within the same open plan building as the soft play area.

eXtra touCheSIt’s obvious in talking to Patricia that she is passionate about what she does and wants parents and children to enjoy their experience at Tiny Town. “We have just started a special free evening for children with disabilities and special needs. Having watched a mother following her autistic son around during our regular session I realised it would be much less stressful for her if she had a special time when they could come. So now we open late on the last Wednesday of the month just for disabled and special needs children. And it’s free. We are also launching a special grandparents session. And for pre-schoolers, we’re starting a story-time session once a week during the day.”

Entrance is for two hours and costs £3 for 0-2s and £4 for ages 2-12s off-peak (9:30am-3:30pm). Weekends, after school, bank holidays and school holidays are peak time and prices are £4 (0-2) and £5 (2-12). aBout MeI’m Nikki Chard and I live, with my husband, in Borstal, Rochester. I have 5 children – all boys! The eldest two are away at university in Canada, but the house is still full with the three little ones, aged 5, 4 and 2.

hoW dId Mud pIeS CoMe aBout? My 5 year old has just started school and I only have 2 more years before my 4 year old starts. I’ve enjoyed this time at home with them, but felt that I needed to look to the future and create something of my own. I did some research and decided that the best thing is to do is something that I feel passionate about. I can’t sing or dance, but I can cook!

Why a pre-SChool ClaSS?After packing my two older boys off to university I thought about how important basic cooking skills are, as well as understanding what constitutes a healthy diet and why it is so important.

aBout MeaBout MeaBout Me It really is something that can start at a very young age. Even my youngest boys help make pizzas, muffins and home-made fish fingers. So I thought, why not turn what we do at home into a fun, exciting and messy pre-school activity.

hoW do the ClaSSeS Work? The parent and toddler classes run during term-time. Children and parents have fun cooking together and take home a tasty treat, along with a recipe card so that they can make them again and again! We also have lots of fun activities and opportunities to learn about food, making it an ideal class for children aged 2-5 years.

If I had a day to MySelf I’d…Defi nitely spend it at a spa! The noise levels in my house are extreme so a day of peace and pampering would be fab!

For details about Mud Pies classes call Nikki on 07815 063163.

SAVE THE DATE...Fresh from their successful autumn nearly new sale, Medway NCT have set the date for the next event as 12th March 2011. Visit www.nctmedway.org.uk for details of their next sale which takes place at Rainham School for Girls.
