Delaware 4-H Youth in Action (YIA) Award ~ Application Deadline 7/1/18
Every 4-H’er has a story, and every story is worth telling! The Delaware 4-H Youth in Action (YIA) award is a premi-ere opportunity for youth to share their stories of how 4-H has changed their lives and how they have, in turn, im-pacted others. This award honors four Delaware 4-H’ers who have gained critical life skills through their 4-H experience and have utilized those skills to overcome a challenge or challenges they have faced. Every honoree is an outstanding 4-H’er who epitomizes 4-H youth empowerment and leadership. The 2018 awards will highlight youth in each of our core areas. Through a formal selection process, one awardee will be chosen within each pillar area: Youth in Action: Agriculture
Youth in Action: Citizenship Youth in Action: Healthy Living Youth in Action: STEM The YIA Awards are presented at The Delaware State Fair during the 4-H Awards Ceremony on Saturday, July 28, 2018. Applicants should be a current 4-H member or recent alumni within the United States, ages 16-19. The win-ner in each of the four pillar areas will receive a $250 monetary award, and their applications will be forwarded on to National 4-H Council as the Delaware 4-H representative for the National Youth in Action Awards program. The application and additional information about these awards can be found on the State 4-H website under the “Awards” section of the menu. We encourage any eligible 4-H member to submit an application by July 1, 2018. We look forward to each of you having the opportunity to tell and share your 4-H story! If you have any questions about this award, please contact your respective County 4-H Office or the State 4-H Office at (302) 831-2509.
These two organizations are very supportive of the 4-H program. Both groups, especially the Grange, are in need of 4-H
members and volunteers to help them in their food booths during the fair. The Grange needs help 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM
shucking corn and preparing potatoes. The Grange and the Farm Bureau need help serving food from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM. We would like to see every teen donate one shift of time to this effort. The Grange has
work opportunities for younger 4-H members. Please visit these booths on the Fairgrounds to sign up to volunteer.

Positive Youth Development is the number one goal of the 4-H shooting sports program. 4-H shooting sports
provide an outstanding way of providing human growth and development.
Introduction to the safe and responsible use of firearms and archery equipment is valuable for many. Firearms and Archery Equipment are the Recreational and Educational Tools of the 4-H Shooting Sports Program.
ARCHERY
Archery includes a complex set of activities, from simple backyard target shooting to formal target or field competitions, from family fun to bow hunting and bow fishing or even the Olympic Games. Archery is a sport that can involve people of all ages. It does not require great strength or great expenditures in order to participate. As such, archery is an excellent individual, group or family recreation. This curriculum is based on the principle of immediate participation and immediate success. County program investment can be low for program startup. Facilities, too, should be easily identified.
WHY PARTICIPATE:
The 4-H Shooting Sports program is currently one of the fastest growing 4-H programs in the nation with over 450,000 youth participants. Community based and family oriented, the 4-H Shooting Sports program offers a diverse curriculum that not only teaches shooting safety and gun owner responsibility, but also helps young people develop good citizenship, personal responsibility, and leadership skills. Leaders will be trained to help youth learn self-discipline, sportsmanship, ethical behavior, and an appreciation for the great outdoors.

4-H Volunteer Green Machine at the 2018 Delaware State Fair
With the Delaware State Fair just around the corner, 4-H youth all over the First State are
looking forward to showcasing projects and livestock in Harrington at the end of July!
While Fair schedules tend to be busy with demonstrations, competitions and shows,
Delaware 4-H is looking to shine the spotlight on our 4-H youth and adult volunteers assisting
those groups and organizations that support our program year round. While the help of our
volunteers will be as important as ever in preparing the 4-H building for exhibits and for
getting the building back to tip-top shape after the Fair, there are so many more ways for 4-H
to lend a hand. From volunteering at the Delaware Farm Bureau Food Booth or the Grange
Food Booth, to sharing time working alongside the countless agriculture related cooperatives
which give so much to our organization, let’s make 2018 the year Delaware 4-H turns into a
volunteer green
machine at the Fair!
Here is a short listing of agencies, groups and organizations who support Delaware 4-H who
would love to see the green machine working alongside them at the 2018 Delaware State
Fair:
Delaware Department of Agriculture
Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control
Delaware Cooperative Extension
Delaware Farm Bureau
Delaware State Grange
For more information on volunteer opportunities at the 2018 Delaware State Fair, please
