QUESTION: If you are desirous of receiving the"baptism in the Holy Spirit and somehow you donot, what are some things that could be keepingyou from it?

(In a seminar on the Holy Spirit, the abovequestion was asked during a question and an-swer session. Several inquiries of the samenature have recently been received in ouroffice. The answer given by Brother Haginduring that session will help those of you nowdesiring to receive the baptism in the Holy

Spirit as well as those of you desiring to helpothers, and we sense the Holy Spirit's leadingto print that answer at this time.)

ANSWER: Actual ly, if you have been real ly born-again and are walking in fellowship with God(of course, if you are out of fellowship you wil lhave to get back in) there are only two thingsthat can keep you from rece iv ing: (1) a lack offaith, or (2) a lack of yieldedness.

And here is how you can te ll which it is . Ifit is a lack of faith, you wil l not sense theSpirit of God move upon you and in you. This

is because it ~Ts your faith that receives thegift—that activates the moving of the Holy Spiritupon you.

In 1950, Je su s appeared to me in a vis ion andtold me to lay hands on people to receive theHoly Ghost. He said, "You quote to them Acts19:6 which says, 'And when Paul had laid hishands upon them, the Holy Ghost came onthem.. ..' Then tel l the candidates who come toreceive the Holy Ghost that I told you to tellthem that when you put your hands on them,the Holy Ghost will come upon them. And thatthey are to perform the act of receiv ing Him."

Jesus went on to tell me, " T e l l the candidatesthen that I told you to tel l them that their tongues,or lips, will seem to want to say something thatisn't English. Tell them then to lift their voicesand speak out whatever supernatural syllableor word seems easy to speak."

A L A C K OF FAITH

Now if a person believes he rece ives , he willsay, " I receive Him. I receive the Gift ." (Itmust be said in faith, of course . If you just sayit out of your head, nothing will happen.) Whenyou do say that in faith, the Spirit will immediately begin to move on you and in you. AndHe will move upon your vocal organs.

If a lack of faith i s involved, you wil l notsense this moving. So I often stop and ask,"Did you sense the Spiri t of God move uponyou? Did your tongue seem to want to say something that wasn't Engl is h?" (Or, as it was inmy own ca se , I ask if there were words downinside which seemed to sort of boil up.) If theiranswer is no, then it is a lack of faith.

And since "fa ith comes by hearing andhearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17),I say to them, " G o back over the Scrip tures againcarefully. In the Acts of the Apostles see howthey rece ived . Read what it says about the'laying on of hands.' Build your faith. School

your se If into faith."Concerning the woman with the issue of bloodwho touched Jesus' clothes, Mark 5:28 says,"F o r she said, If I may touch but his clo thes,I shall be whole." The Greek says here, "Forshe kept saying."

So I often say to folks who are hard chroniccases, as we call them, who have been seekingmany yea rs , "R ea d what the Word says aboutthe laying on of hands to receive the Holy Spirit.Then for the next 24 hours keep saying, 'Thenext t ime I go and he lays his hands on me, Iwill receive the Holy Ghost and speak with other

tongues.' "Not one has failed to re ce ive. Those who

have struggled for years have come and whenhands were laid on them they have instantlyreceived and spoken with other tongues. You canschool yourself into faith.

A LACK OF YIELDING

Now, secondly, if the Holy Spirit does comeand you sense Hi s moving, you must cooperatewith Him.

At times, when I have asked someone, "Didit seem as if your tongue wanted to say something which wasn't Engl ish?", he has replied,"I t was al l I could do to keep it from it. "

You're not supposed to keep it from it! Youare supposed to speak.

Many people get into the natural ent ire ly.They are expecting something to suddenly comedown on them and grab them and make them do

something they wouldn't want to do. Many seemto be waiting for God to grab them and poursomething down them. It appears some think thatwhen God gets ready it will be as though Heturns a little radio on inside you and it willstart talking. But it doesn't work that way.

The Scripture says , "And they were allfilled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speakwith other tongues...."(Acts 2:4).

"They" is the subject of the sentence ."They" were all filled and "the y" began tospeak with other tongues. We make a mistakein not teaching people what to expect and how to

yield to God.When folks get down and seek and seek and

seek God in the dark and don't receive, sometimes someone will sl ap them on the back andsay, "Bet te r luck next ti me ." But you don'treceive the Holy Ghost by luck. You receive Himby faith!

We need light and the Word of God enlightens."The entrance of thy words giveth light " (Psa lms119:130). "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, anda light unto my path" (Psa lms 119:105). We canhelp people be able to respond or yield to theSpirit.

We held a meeting in Texas a few years agoand a lady in the congregation wrote her friendwho lived some distance away, "Come downand get the Holy Ghost! Everybody down here isreceiving the Holy Spirit." So her friend, aschool teache r, left Fr iday after cl as se s anddrove down for the weekend. In the Friday nightserv ice as I laid hands on her I knew the HolySpirit came or, her. The Lord had told me in thevision how I could tell and I knew that He hadcome. But she did not perform the act ofreceiving and yielding to Him. On Saturday nightI

la id hands on her again and she didn't rece ive.Then on Sunday morning after I had preachedI turned the service over to the pastor. Thislady stood up and addressed the pastor, " B r o -ther, I have come all this way after my friendwrote that everyone was receiving. (Everyonewho had come except her had received . Howevershe had not been in the two weeks of teaching

services.) I have to start back to be there for

school in the morning and I wonder if BrotherHagin would lay hands on me and pray againthis morning."

Desperation was written on her face and youcould see she was hungry for God. So I laidhands on her again, and again I knew the Spiritcame upon her. But still she did not receive. Itwas gett ing late so I finally turned the serviceback again to the pastor and I walked off theplatform and out the side door.

As I was walking through the parking lot Inoticed that she and her friend had left theservice too and were sitting in their car. I felt

so sorry for her and I quickly said to the Lordin my spir it (And here is something you needto do—depend on the Holy Spirit to help you inhelping others . He can show you exactly what todo.), "L or d, how can I help he r? "

Just like a flash He showed me. Itcame-as arevelation on the inside. In my spiri t I knew whatit was that hindered her—she thought that theHoly Ghost was going to do the speaking intongues. I knew the Scripture that would help herand what I needed to do.

I walked up to the car and handed her myBible opened toActs2:4, "Sister, would you mind

reading that verse aloud please," I requested.So she read, "And they were al l filled with

the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with othertongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. "She looked up at me questioningly.

I said, "Read it again."She read it again. And again she looked at

me as if to say, "What now?"I smiled and said, "Read it aloud again."She read it again for the third time and again

she looked at me with a question mark on herface.

I saw that she st il l hadn't gotten it and so Isaid, "Read it again." I intended for her to readit until she got it.

The fourth time she started reading aloud,"And they were all filled with the Holy Ghostand they.. .Ah!.. .Ah!.. .Ah!" she exclaimed. "Whyit says 'they' spoke! I always thought the HolyGhost spoke with other tongues! If I'd beencalled to witness in court I would have said theHoly Ghost spoke through them in tongues."

Then I said to her, "The Bible says that inthe mouth of two or three witnesses, shall everyword be establ ished. You can 't take just one

Scripture and build anything on it . That is a mistake. You must take the whole body of Scriptureon a subject. Le t' s get two or three witnesses.Then we will be on safe and solid ground."

So I had her read Acts 10:44-46. And sheread, "Whi le Peter yet spake these words, theHoly Ghost fell on all them which heard theword. And they of the cir cumcis ion which be-

lieved were astonished, as many as came with

Peter, because that on the Gentiles also waspoured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For theyheard them speak with tongues, and magnifyGod. . . ."

For the third witness we read Acts 19:6,"And when Paul had laid his hands upon them,the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spakewith tongues, and prophesied."

Then I asked her, "When I laid hands onyou a while ago, did you sense the presence ofthe Holy Ghost?"

" Y e s , I certainly did .""Sister, I perceive that the same anointing

to speak i s st il l there. You can speak rightnow, if you will. Just open your mouth andtalk."

Without waiting or stumbling that dear ladyopened her mouth and began to speak a mostfluent and beautiful language tn tongues .A ndshe could have been doing it al l the time .

We do have to tell folks what to expect. Thislady hadn't known what to expect. But the Wordenlightened her and she real ized that "they"must cooperate.

Speaking with other tongues is a cooperationbetween you and the Holy Ghost . It isn' t a ll

the Holy Ghost. It isn't all the Holy Ghost andit isn't all you—it is both of you.

You may run into someone who will say," I want to be carefu l. I don't want it just to beme."

One young man said, " I know you laid handson me and I sensed the Spi rit of God come uponme and I spoke something I had never spokenbefore, but I'm afraid that was just me doingit."

"Doing what?" I asked."Talking with tongues."

"It must have been you. It wasn't me."" Y e s , " he said, "but I wanted it to be theHoly Ghost ."

"Oh, you wanted the Holy Ghost to receivethe Holy Ghost. "

"No, I wanted the Holy Ghost to talk intongues."

"He doesn't talk in ton gues," I replied."You rece ive Him. He gives you utterance. Youtalk with tongues."

The Bible says that they began to speak asthe Spi rit gave them utte rance. He gives theutterance, you do the talking. Now isn't that a

cooperation between you and the Holy Ghost?People will say, " I don't want it to be in the

flesh." Well, we live in this body of flesh andwe can't get the Holy Ghost any other wayexcept in the fle sh. Pete r on the Day of Pentecost repeated Joel ' s prophecy saying, "A nd itshall come to pas s in the last days, saith God,I will pour out of my Spi rit upon all flesh "

(Acts 2:17). It is men in the flesh, worshiping

God in the Spirit.And I've had people say, "Brother Hagin,if you ever see me shout, i t' ll be the Lord ."

"Do you mean if you ever shout it will bethe Lord shouting?"

"Oh, no! I don't mean it will be God shouting,but I mean it will be God making me do it!"

"You will never shout then," I say "He'snever made anyone shout yet."

Nor has He made them do anything else. Youhave to yield to Him . If God made people dothings, He would make everyone be saved. ButHe doesn 't. The Word of God is preached and

the Holy Ghost deals with people. They have thatpull, that urge, that prompting of the Spirit torespond to Ch ri st . Ye t we have al l seen peoplereject it. You can respond, or you can reject,

Demons and evil spirits drive and makepeople do things they don't want to. The HolySpirit prompts, urges, l eads . He gives a gentlepush, but you have to go with it . If you don'tcooperate, He will leave.

A young man was pointed out to me in acity-wide meeting as being the mus ic direc tor ofthe la rgest Assembly of God Churc h in the city.I was told that even though he had a degree inChristian Education, for over 20 years he hadsought but had never received the Baptism inthe Holy Spirit. After much persuasion from hiswife, he came forward at the invitation but al lover his face was written, " I ' m not going toreceive anything. I'm coming to please he r. "

Someone (a minister) had also said, "Thatfellow is a choir director at First Assembly.There must be some secret sin in his life orhe would have received."

Have you heard people talk like that? Theydo—and it is unjust. The devil is the accuser of

the brethren. He says to folks, "There must besomething wrong with you or you would have hadit by now." If you accuse the brethren then youare joining with the devil .

The minute I la id hands on him I knew byinward revelation and said to him, "Th er e i s nosec ret sin in your life. You can rece ive theHoly Ghost as you are."

"Do you mean that? I've been seeking anawfully long tim e. I had about decided there mustbe something terribly wrong with me."

I assured him there was nothing wrong withhim and to boost his faith I said, " I will not

have prayed for you over three times beforeyou will be filled with the Holy Spirit."

"You've already prayed once, just now,"He said.

"That's right. Just two left."Faith is positive!The next night he was sitting right up front

and this time his wife didn't have to get him to

come forward."Brother Hagin, do you still think I'll get

the Holy Ghost?"" N o , " I said. " I don't think you will. I know

it.""You said you wouldn't lay hands on me over

three times without my rece iv ing and tonight willbe twice."

"That's right. If you don't re ce ive tonight, youwill next time."

I laid hands on him and prayed and he didn'treceive.

"Do you still think I will get it?" he asked." I have never thought it—I know it. You

expect it and that is it."We were having a prayer serv ice the next

morning and at about 10 o'cl ock as I was kneelingI felt somebody tap me on the shoulder. Ilooked up and he was stooping over me saying,"You've already prayed twice and I just got tothinking, 'Why wait until tonight? The y're havinga p rayer meeting this morning, I just think I' l lgo over there and receive.' "

"Just kneel right he re ." When I laid hands

on him, the Holy Ghost came on him and hebegan to stammer a little. Then I said, "That'sit, Brother. The Holy Ghost is giving you utterance. Ju st grab it l ike a dog does a bone andrun off with it. Talk a blue streak."

Long ago I learned to ask people what it was

that helped them. We may be from differentsections of the country and talk with differentdialects, but people are about the same everywhere. They have the same devi l and the samefallen human nature to contend with. They havethe same God, the same Holy Ghost, the sameBible. So I asked him what it was that helpedhim most.

He answered, "There were three things.Fi rs t, I had just given up and thought, 'Ei therthis Bapt ism in the Holy Ghost isn't for everybody like they preach it in my church, or thereis something drastical ly wrong with me. Theremust be some secret sin in me that I don'tknow about.' When you said there was nothingwrong with me, it seemed to take a weight offmy shoulders . Spiri tual ly speaking I breatheda deep breath and said, 'Thank God, there isn'tanything wrong with me!'

"And secondly, you helped my faith. I wasso far down. But you were so posi tive. Man,you just got me to believing.

"Thirdly, in all those ye ar s, I had been tothe p lace where I had stammering lips many

ti mes. Someone close by would say, 'That 's theHoly Ghost, Brother. Let the Holy Ghost talk.'Then I would stop to let Him talk and that wouldbe the end of it. But you said, 'That's the HolyGhost, just talk a blue streak. You talk.' Andman, I took off."
