STAFF PROFILE

4 Kennel Capers edition028

Q&AWhat were you doing prior to GRSA?I just started on the 15th of June. I was working in administration for a small business in Adelaide. I came to GRSA without any racing industry experience and I’m really looking forward to learning more about the industry.

What are a few of your responsibilities at GRSA?I produce the race books, answer the phone, generate and upload Form guides to the website, and general administration duties.

What is your favourite part of your role?I came from a small office so having more co-workers around is enjoyable. Also, since I’m still learning, every day brings a new challenge and the time flies because it is such a busy role.

What is an accomplishment you’re proud of?I completed my first race book this week! I also think I’m doing well learning the new systems and I’m starting to understand the processes, but you’d have to ask my boss!

What are a few of your hobbies outside of work?Spending time with family and friends, listening to music, and keeping fit and healthy.

The Final of the Gawler Classic on Tuesday June 16 over 531m produced an excellent result for local businessman John Cunningham.

John is a part owner of Mrs Bubbles, who started out of the 8 box, jumping well but just behind Lady Xanthe (6) and Long Gully Magic (7). Down the back straight Lady Xanthe led, but nearing the turn Long Gully Magic took the lead along the rails, with Mrs Bubbles following. Into the straight, Mrs Bubbles swept to the front, going on to score a convincing win by 4½ lengths, in a good time of 30.73 secs.

One of the heat winners, Long Gully Magic put in another good run to finish second for Paula Hearnden of Angaston. Reserve runner Aussie Noorumba getting a run from box 5, finished on strongly to take third spot for Bill Wudarczyk of Alberton.

Mrs Bubbles is prepared at Middleton by Matthew Payne, for John Cunningham and Andrew Peden of Whyalla. Mrs Bubbles or “Vonnie” was one of two pups John and Andrew purchased at three months of age. John handled the rearing, with Andrew taking up the training duties. Under Andrew’s care, Vonnie showed plenty of promise in the early stages, going on to win 9 races with 8 placings from 26 starts, but decided to pass the training on to Matthew, a full time trainer. This arrangement has worked well in the past with other greyhounds including the well performed Strathisla Lass, and is working well again, given this result.

John said that he had got involved in the sport in his teenage years, while Andrew had been participating first in Scotland, and then in Whyalla after he migrated.

John really enjoys greyhound racing and said it is disappointing that the sport has been tarnished by a few.

The new venue at Gawler is proving to be very popular. It is a good opportunity to enjoy a meal and join the club for some good racing every Tuesday afternoon and Sunday at twilight.

BACKGROUND CHECKS

Greyhounds Australasia have previously released some guidelines to assist new owners when purchasing a greyhound.

The guidelines are to ensure owners conduct a due diligence before purchasing, much in the same way you would when buying a house or a car.

Prior to purchase, prospective buyers should complete their own validity checks on the greyhound.

Basic background checks include:

1. request a Vets Certificate from the current owner

2. seek clarification on any suspensions for the particular greyhound

3. review the greyhound’s previous race form

4. identify the greyhound and seller (i.e. sight registration papers and or owner/trainer identity card)

5. seek clarification on any previous injuries the greyhound has received

6. if the seller is acting as an agent for the transaction – verify the authenticity of the agent

7. if participants intend breeding with the greyhound – verify the greyhound’s DNA profile

8. always request a written receipt upon payment.

The majority of this information can be checked by contacting the seller or alternatively the relevant state greyhound racing controlling authority.

NOTICE TO GRSA INDUSTRY PARTICIPANTS

The last few months have been the most challenging in the sport’s history. The Board and staff of GRSA are working hard to implement a strategy which addresses the risks and protects the future of our industry for future generations of participants. I would like to thank all of our trainers, in particular, for their understanding that this outcome can only be achieved by processes which impact upon all participants.

Our message to industry is a simple one:

• Live-baiting does not and cannot have any place in our sport

• All participants have a fundamental obligation to help protect the future of our industry

• The future for the South Australian industry is bright – let’s work towards it together.

Since February, GRSA has taken the following steps in response to the controversy that has confronted our sport:

• Employed three more full time staff in the Animal Welfare Department

• Purchased two more designated fleet vehicles

• Increased random kennel/property inspections to ensure that 100% of GRSA participants are inspected at least once a year

• Appointed a Senior Investigator to assist GRSA with investigations and provide feedback to better improve procedures and protocols

• Improved surveillance techniques and resourcing – Drones, Nearmap, Go Pros

• Increased its budget for swabbing including out-of-competition testing

• Developed stronger working relationships with RSPCA and SAPOL

• Commenced feasibility study of video surveillance at remote racing facilities

Penalties for Rule Breaches

• A minimum 10 year disqualification period and a sum not exceeding $50,000 for breaches of the rules relating to luring and live-baiting.

• A minimum 5 year disqualification period and a sum not exceeding $20,000 for breaches of the rules relating to witnessing such conduct but failing to report.

Penalties for Criminal Breaches

• A maximum 4 year imprisonment and a sum not exceeding $50,000 for breaches of the rules relating to live-baiting.

• Offences of live-baiting under the Animal Welfare Act are Indictable matters which carry severe penalties.

• Applications may be made under the Criminal Assets Confiscation Act (2005) for persons convicted of such an offence to lose property, vehicles or anything else used in support of that conduct.

MEDIA RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE USE 26 June 2016

Amendments to Greyhounds Australasia Rules effective 1 July 2015 The Board of Greyhounds Australasia (GA) has approved new and amended national rules (GARs) effective 1 July 2015. See attached. The objective of these new and amended rules is to further strengthen industry integrity and the welfare of all greyhounds whether racing, being prepared to race or retired. A copy of the new and amended GARs concerning the offence of live baiting which was introduced on 20 April 2015 is also attached. GA reviews the GARs regularly. New and/or amended rules are now approved by the Board twice a year and become effective on either 1 January or 1 July each year or at any other time deemed appropriate to support industry integrity and animal welfare. The GARs help ensure rule uniformity for participants in all jurisdictions throughout Australia and New Zealand and minimise the need for local rules. All new and amended rule proposals are recommended for approval by the GA Rules and Integrity Committee and have been endorsed by controlling bodies. All GARs can be found at www.galtd.org.au.

BREEDERS LICENCE IS A MUST

It is a requirement of GRSA that if you choose to breed greyhounds in South Australia that you have a current Breeders licence.

If you are looking at breeding with your bitch and you are currently not licensed as a Breeder then you MUST obtain a breeders licence PRIOR to your bitch being served.

Should you have your bitch served prior to obtaining a licence then a Stewards fine may be imposed. This may also jeopardise the chances at receiving the GRSA Breeders Rebate.

If you have any queries about a Breeders licence please contact me for further information.

Important Information for Breeders

New Breeding Rules come into effect 1st July 2015

REGISTRATION AS A ‘BREEDING FEMALE’As part of the National greyhound Welfare Strategy, a number of new rules relating to breeding are set to commence 1st July 2015. These rules are aimed at improving the health and welfare of our breeding females and to minimise the number of greyhound puppies bred that may not be suitable for racing.

GAR 127 (6) A bitch shall not be used for breeding purposes unless registered as a ‘breeding female’.

If you have any female greyhounds that you plan to breed after the 1st of July, it is important you understand what you will have to do to ensure they are eligible to be served when they are next on season.

New Breeding Stock

To register your greyhound for breeding you will need to apply to your Controlling Body. Once approved, you will be issued with a pink coloured ID card for that greyhound.

ANIMAL WELFAREBELINDA PEARCE – ANIMAL WELFARE OFFICER

To qualify for registration as a Breeding Female, you will need to:

• have your greyhound DNA fingerprinted – kits are available through Greyhounds Australasia

• provide a vaccination certificate showing that your greyhound has been vaccinated to C5 level and that the vaccination is current – i.e. that the date for the next booster vaccination has not passed.

• Apply to your state controlling body - Applications will either be online or via a standard form, and you may be required to pay a fee.

Existing Breeding Stock

Even if your greyhound has had one or more litters, you will still need to apply to register her as a ‘breeding female’. As she will already have a DNA certificate, application only requires that you:

• provide a vaccination certificate showing that your greyhound has been vaccinated to C5 level and that the vaccination is current – i.e. that the date for the next booster vaccination has not passed.

Once approved, you will be issued with a pink coloured ID card for that greyhound.

Applications for existing breeding stock are FEE FREE!!

Please Note: Ongoing registration as a Breeding Female will require you to maintain current vaccination status – details of booster vaccinations will need to be provided each year or she will not be eligible for breeding.

BREEDING RESTRICTIONS

If you have a female greyhound you plan to breed, you will need to be aware of the new restrictions that will apply to her from 1st July.

Age Restriction

As soon as your female greyhound turns eight years of age, her registration as a Breeding Female will become ‘Inactive’ and you will not be able to breed her again unless the criteria in rule GAR 127 (10) are met.

15Kennel Capers edition028

GAR 127 (10) The owner of a breeding female, or the person with authority to breed that female, shall not cause her to be mated if that breeding female is over eight (8) years of age without prior veterinary certification of appropriate health and fitness, and the approval of the Controlling Body in writing. The Controlling Body approval granted under this sub-rule will be to allow one (1) service/insemination only, irrespective of the result of said service/insemination. The veterinary certification must be obtained within 120 days prior to the date of the service.

3 Litter Maximum

Once your female whelps her third litter (regardless of who bred each litter), her Breeding Female status will become ‘Inactive’ and she will not be able to be bred again unless the criteria in rule GAR 127 (11) are met.

GAR 127 (11) A breeding female cannot be used for breeding more than three (3) litters without prior veterinary certification of appropriate health and fitness for further litters, and the approval of the Controlling Body in writing. The Controlling Body approval granted under this sub-rule will be to allow one (1) additional service/insemination only, irrespective of the result of said service/insemination. The veterinary certification must be obtained within 120 days prior to the date of the additional service.

Litter Frequency

If your female whelps two litters close together (i.e. bred at two consecutive seasons) her Breeding Female status will fall ‘Inactive’ to ensure that she cannot be served again where the result would breach this rule. If she is a ‘six-month’ cycler, this will mean she will be forced to rest one season before being mated again, allowing her body time to recover, and allowing her pups to reach an age where their ability can be assessed.

GAR 127 (12) The owner of a breeding female, or the person with authority to breed that female, shall not cause her to whelp more than two (2) litters in any 18 month period.

If you have any questions in relation to your greyhound’s eligibility for breeding, please contact your state controlling body.

REGISTRATION OF A LITTER

As part of the National Greyhound Welfare Strategy, a number of new rules relating to vaccinations are set to commence 1st July 2015. These rules are aimed at improving the health and welfare of our greyhound puppies prior to them being reared thus ensuring that they are fully immunised and their vaccinations are and have had time to be fully protective.

If you have puppies requiring vaccinations on or after 1st July, you will need to be aware of the new rules relating to the additional requirements for puppy vaccination.

Compulsory vaccinations of puppies now comprises two different vaccinations in two different age groups, and the puppies cannot be moved until 14 days has elapsed after the 10-16 week vaccination.

The first vaccination must occur between the ages of six (6) and eight (8) weeks and as a minimum it must provide protection against parvo virus infection, hepatitis, and canine distemper identified as a C3.

GAR 137 (1) (b) For pups whelped on or after 1st July 2015 a certificate of vaccination against parvo virus infection, hepatitis, canine distemper(C3) issued by a veterinary surgeon identifying the greyhound by reference to its sex and colour, that indicates that such vaccination was performed upon the greyhound at least between six (6) and eight (8) weeks.

Between the ages of ten (10) and sixteen (16) weeks, a C5 vaccination will be required. The C5 vaccination gives protection from parvo virus infection, hepatitis, canine distemper, parainfluenza virus and bordatella bronchiseptica.

GAR 137 (1) (c) A certificate of vaccination against parvo virus infection, hepatitis, canine distemper, parainfluenza virus and bordatella bronchiseptica (C5) issued by a veterinary surgeon identifying the greyhound by reference to its sex and colour, ear branding, and/or microchip identifications, that indicates that such vaccination was performed upon the greyhound at between ten (10) and sixteen (16) weeks.

Another change that participants need to be aware of is that puppies cannot be moved until microchipped, earbranded and until at least 14 days has elapsed after the 10-16 week vaccination. This is to ensure that the puppies are fully protected prior to being moved.

GAR 136 (3) Except with the prior consent of the Controlling Body, a litter of pups shall not be divided or relocated from the address of whelping until such time as they have been ear branded, microchipped and vaccinated in accordance with these Rules, and further until a period of 14 days has elapsed from the date of the last vaccination pursuant to Rule 137(1) (c) (i) and (ii).

If you have any question in relation to your vaccination requirements for your puppies please contact your state controlling body.

BREEDERS CLAIM ELIGIBILITY

With the rebate claims ending each financial year I will remind Breeders that the determination of which financial year will be the whelping date of the pups, so if the bitch whelps on 30th June 2015 then it is in this financial year, if they whelp on 1st July 2015 then the claim will be considered in next financial years details.

Please contact me should you require further clarification regarding your claim.

RACING IN QUEENSLAND

If you are intending to race in Queensland there will be a requirement for interstate trainers to sign a Statutory Declaration prior to nominating a greyhound from 1 July 2015.

Racing Queensland has advised that people are at liberty to submit alternative declarations for consideration by RQ. These forms are available from GRSA and will be available on the GRSA website for participants shortly. Please contact me for any assistance if traveling to Queensland.

ADELAIDE CUP DATE CONFIRMED – FRIDAY 9TH OCTOBER

We will be running our Group 1 Adelaide Cup again on a Friday night. After the success of last years event the state’s biggest greyhound race will be run on Friday 9th October 2015.

ICG MEETING ON FRIDAY 17TH JULY

The next ICG meeting will be held at Angle Park on Friday 17th July. An agenda will be sent out to the panel members very shortly.

INDUSTRY TRAINERS MEETING ON TUESDAY 11TH AUGUST

The next Industry Trainers meeting will be held at Gawler on Tuesday 11th August starting around 10am. GRSA will work in with those trainers during kennelling and racing times. An agenda and conformation of the panel will be sent out in the next few weeks.

VETERANS RACE CONDITIONS

Veterans races are for 3½ year old and older greyhounds. The 4yo or older greyhounds still receive first preference into the race with the 3½ year old and older being included in age order (older greyhounds first). These races are selected based on age and not on form. Greyhounds must still have raced or qualified in the previous 3 months. These races are either Grade 5 or FFA events.

Last year the GRP approved that these races would be selected like Juvenile events where the Grader will consider a race of Veterans age as his first option when grading regardless of nomination (Feature Events excluded). The GRP were specific that this was only for Grade 5 greyhounds and would be treated as Non Penalty events with guarding as required. If trainers did not want to be considered for these races they could put “No Veterans” on their nomination.

GAWLER TRIALS TO START AT 7.30AM ON THURSDAYS

It has been highlighted that trainers are not arriving for Thursday morning Trials until at least 7.30am therefore extending the sessions. As a result these times have changed with Thursday now commencing at 7.30am and concluding at 10.30am from June 4. The Monday morning trial session at Gawler will still commence at 6.30am.

TRIALS AT EMERLEY PARK ON FRIDAYS

Greyhound Racing SA has taken over the trials at Emerley Park. GRSA will maintain and conduct the trials. Details are below – • All Trials $6.00• All greyhounds are to be muzzled• Trials commence at 8.00am and conclude at 9.00am• No timing is available• Straight track only

RACE NIGHT OFFICE CLOSES AT 6.30PM ON MONDAY NIGHTS

The Race Night office at Angle Park closes at 6.30pm on Monday nights so please ensure that Trainers have collected their Trainers Fee straight after kenneling and that any paperwork is lodged in the office before this time.

VOLUNTARY PAYMENT FOR GAP ON PRIZEMONEY FORMS

Through the ICG meetings and Breeders Task Force it was suggested that an option for owners to direct prizemoney to GAP be an option available on the Prizemoney Reimbursement forms. GRSA has made this change on the forms where Owners can direct a percentage of prizemoney to GAP. These forms are available on the website and from GRSA.

PAYMENT OF PRIZEMONEY/TRAINERS FEE

As GRSA continues to refine and increase our usage of the OzChase system we have moved away from our current manual methods of processing prizemoney/trainers’ fee and have started utilising reports automatically generated from OzChase.

With this increased functionality, GRSA has the ability to split prizemoney payments between owners and trainers, as opposed to the current situation where 100% of prizemoney is paid to one bank account. Should trainers or owners wish to take advantage of this it will be necessary for additional forms to be lodged with GRSA.

As a result of the fact that the payments will be automated, each OzChase ID will only be able to have one bank account associated with it. Whilst previously GRSA has been able to manually adjust this and provide separate remittance advices, unfortunately this option will no longer be available.

These changes have been implemented. Any queries regarding this change please contact Sarah Webster or the racing department on 08 8243 7100.

**Please ensure that all transfers of ownership have been lodged as each race meeting will be finalised on a daily basis. If the transfer has not been lodged before the greyhound competes then the prizemoney will be paid to the current ownership or withheld if there is no account.

If an Owner directs their money to the account of a trainer and then owns another greyhound with a different trainer, GRSA will make the assumption that all money is to also be paid to the trainer unless otherwise advised**

THE ADVERTISER UBET EXPANDED FORM GUIDE

The Advertiser form guide is available for the first four days of the week and includes expert comments, speed maps, run lines, tipsters columns along with winning box statistics and leading trainer details on occasions for GRSA greyhound meetings all in full colour. UBET also are providing fixed odds on all these meetings so there’s not much more a punter could want for.

POLICY RELEASED FOR TRIALLING AT ANGLE PARK AND GAWLER BEFORE THE RACE MEETING

The Industry Consultative Group recently met and discussed the trialling policies at race meetings and in particular how the Monday nights Angle Park structured policy has been accepted. The ICG panel decided to accept the Monday night policy for all Angle Park (except Thursday night) and Gawler meetings allowing for trialling to be conducted between kennels closing and the start of the first race. Kenneling times for these meetings will be extended by 15 minutes to allow for these trials to occur the same as Monday night.

The policy will now be introduced for Angle Park Monday & Wednesday along with Gawler Tuesday, Friday and Sunday to start from the Angle Park Monday meeting 4th May 2015. This will now be the sole policy for trialling at race meetings.

RACE MEETING TRIAL POLICY

Angle Park Monday & Wednesday along with Gawler Tuesday, Friday, Sunday (commencing Monday’s meeting - 4 May 2015)

Two fields from the boxes with a maximum of four (4) greyhounds will be conducted immediately following the completion of the kennelling procedure for the Race Meeting.

The following lists the order in which greyhounds will be selected in the event if more than 8 greyhounds nominated.

1. Reserves at the Meeting that do not obtain starts.

2. Trainers that have greyhounds engaged and are located in an area affected by track closures.

3. Trainers that have greyhounds engaged.

4. Satisfactory trials.

5. Other greyhounds.

PROCEDURE/CRITERIA

1. For Monday nights trainer to contact GRSA between 10.00am and 11.00am on the Monday to nominate. Should the Monday be a public holiday bookings are to be made between 8am and 9am on the scratching line on the Monday.

2. For Angle Park Wednesday, Gawler Tuesday & Friday trainer to contact GRSA between 9.00am and 10.00am on the day to nominate.

3. For Gawler Sunday trainer to contact GRSA between 8.00am and 9.00am on the scratching line on the day to nominate.

4. Other than reserve greyhounds Trainers will be restricted to trialling one (1) greyhound unless nominations determine otherwise.

5. Stewards allot the Box for the Greyhound.

6. Trials will be 515m & 531m in distance as first preference. Other distances considered depending on nominations.

7. Greyhounds currently under suspension or not cleared to race are not eligible to be nominated.(these trials are conducted as if they are at a race meeting so all greyhounds need to be eligible at nomination time)

8. Greyhound registration certificate or cards must be produced at kennelling time.

9. Trainers with other greyhounds engaged can utilize the extra kennel space until such time they are ready to leave OR trainers with no other greyhounds will be free to leave following their trial.

Please Note Kennelling times will be 15 minutes earlier for these meetings from 4th May to allow for these trials.

• If there are 12 races at Angle Park or Gawler there will be NO trials.

• The Vet Clinic at these meetings cannot be used to accommodate any greyhounds to allow for extra trialling greyhounds. This policy has been introduced so that participants book in under the policy. The Vet Clinic needs to be available for the Vet and Stewards at race meetings

Exceptions to this Policy–

• Thursday nights are kept available for the option for Interstate greyhounds to solo trial in a lead up to our Group races and also local greyhound’s trialling for Group racing interstate.

• Local greyhounds will be allowed to solo trial in a lead up to a feature race upon request and they will take one of the eight kennels available for trialling ahead of the policy and sit separately to the 4 dog trials. Feature races are considered to be – Adelaide Cup, Gawler Cup, Oaks, Derby, Howard Ashton, Brian Johnstone, SA Sprint, SA Distance Championship, SA Anniversary Cup, SA Country Cup, National Finals & any Group race Interstate.

• Local greyhounds will be allowed to trial on a race night, where they are in preparation for a feature event and nominated for a meeting and the race does not stand up. This will include all distances and also take precedence over the policy.

• If a greyhound qualifies for a feature final and requires a trial in between this will be conducted as a solo trial and sit separately to the 2 four dog trials.

Whilst these changes increase the time between kennelling and the first race by 15 minutes it should provide an opportunity for more trialling opportunities for one and two dog trainers in particular.

It is extremely important that trainers book in to trial at these race meetings. No trials will be accepted outside of these booking times.

MOUNT GAMBIER KENNEL HOUSE UPGRADETrainers and handlers kennelling greyhounds at Tara Raceway will notice a marked difference in the kennel house.

Recently insulation and a ceiling have been installed at the Mount Gambier Greyhound Racing Club, making the kennel house fully lined.

Previously, renovations had been undertaken in order that extra kennels could be installed to allow for the running of up to 12 races, subject to nominations.

The old wooden entrance doors to the kennel house were replaced by double glass doors as part of the upgrade.

The almost completed kennel house upgrade follows the erection of a new tractor shed at the track, gates and fencing at the 400 metre and 512 metre starts, and electric timing for the 277 metres boxes which are used on trial days.

Among other projects expected to be undertaken at Tara Raceway this year are a watering system for the track and a revamp of the UBet TAB facilities in the clubhouse.

Kennel house renovations are taking place at Tara Raceway.

TRIALSGAWLER WEDNESDAY MAIDEN HEATS

To be run at the Wednesday Night Trials. There is no restriction on 400m/531m maiden events and trainers will be able to nominate for races or qualy trials each week. Also maiden qualy trial winners will be carried over if there is no race for them that week.

NOMINATING ONLINE FOR QUALIFYING TRIALS

For Angle Park, Gawler and Strathalbyn qualifying trials the nominations must be lodged with GRSA by 12.30pm on the day of the meeting. To nominate online however you can only do this up until 11.59pm the day before. Due to a system security policy you cannot nominate on the day for these trials online. Please contact our staff if you have any issues with these nominations prior to them closing.

SINGLE TRIALS

A reminder to trainers that single trials can be booked with two greyhounds however you need to advise when booking of your intention to do this. If you wish to put three or more into this trial then a field trial will have to be booked.

BOOKING NUMBER FOR TRIALS

Participants wishing to book trials are required to ring 8243 7172, this phone line will only be used for trial

bookings and will queue participants. By having this one number with participants queuing makes this process to be a more efficient way of booking trials.

There will be NO trials accepted through the normal administration number. To be fair to everyone GRSA will only accept bookings using the new number.

POLICY FOR TRIALS IN PLACE

Remember trials will only be taken from –

* 12.30pm Monday for Angle Park Tuesday nights

* 12.30pm Tuesday for Gawler Wednesday nights

* 12.30pm Thursday for Strathalbyn Friday nights

* 12.30pm Thursday for Angle Park Saturday morning (day earlier due to being morning trials)

* For Public Holidays it will be the working day before ie if Monday is a Public Holiday then bookings taken on the Friday

*trial days that are not booked in with GRSA remain the same process (ie Gawler Thursday)*
