He earned a degree in Landscape Design and Management, and later a Master’s in Environmental Horticulture from the University of Florida. He has worked for several years as a professional Landscape Designer in private, municipal and governmental capacities in the South Florida area. He currently works as a private landscape designer and consultant for different municipalities, he is an Horticulture and Landscape design instructor at the Fairchild Botanic Gardens and a Miami Dade College Adjunct Faculty. His work entails reviewing all environmentally sensitive state construction projects of five different counties ensuring trees, plants, animals and native orchids are protected creating a functional and environmentally conscious approach to design. His credentials include: ISA Certified Arborist, Certified Landscape Inspector and Certified Horticulturist. environmental center at the Kendall campus

LANDSCAPE DESIGN AND GARDENING

SHADE TREE AND PALM SPECIES IN SOUTH FLORIDA – BIOLOGY AND SELECTION (7.5 HOURS) - $125 This class will be a general introduction to some of the most common tropical palm and trees both exotic and native in regard to proper tree id, tree care, hurricane wind tolerance, pest problems, landscape design and maintenance. It will focus on the most proficient species of palms and why they are best suitable to our South Florida environment, going into proper pruning for hurricane preparedness. In addition, the class will cover the study of tropical tree species accounting for a large percentage of our local South Florida canopy. It will answer questions such as, What to buying and installing as part of our landscape projects? Do all species bring aesthetic or economic value to our South Florida region? Finally, the class will cover proper tree selection from nursery stock and it will focus in poor performers, pest sensitive and hurricane unfit palms or trees that should be avoided when thinking about landscape design in the area.

Do you know which are the most colorful, exotic or native perennial plants that entice local butterflies for our area? Landscape designer and horticulturist Guillermo Salazar will help you create the perfect landscape environment to create a colorful, fragrant and appealing space that provides the needed resources to be successful at attracting all of these desirable fascinating flying little creatures.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CLASSES

LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT WITH STORM HARDY TROPICAL TREES (7.5 HOURS) - $125This class will show you how to landscape using South Florida tropical trees selectively to minimize wind damage, both to commercial and residential landscape scenarios. The class will focus on the specie, tree biology and proficiency, scientific research and professional and practical field experiences of industry professional landscape designers and arborists in regards to South Florida’s unique tree structural endurance, as well as the best and worst tree species currently being used in landscape installations all over the region, providing answers that every landscape manager, property owner and lawmaker in Florida should know. The ultimate goal after taking this one-day class is to make educated landscape tree selection decisions and make your experiences in the next hurricane go from catastrophic to a mere inconvenience.
