Getting to Know Ken Hopkins

Ken Hopkins, ASA’s current Vice-President, hasbeen a professional astrologer since 1971. He wasa member of the AFA faculty in 1974,1976, 2003 and 2006; and has writtenfor the NCGR specialty declinationgroup, “The Other Dimension.” Twoof Ken’s loves are astrology and sports,and he has had great success in usingprogressed declinations to pick winningteams. FRIDAY NIGHT Lecture - The Lunar Stand-still and the Implications of an Out-of-BoundsMoon

Every 19 years, for a period of about three years,the moon can attain declinations of beyond 28degrees. From the great stone circles of northwestScotland to Chimney Rock in Colorado, the ancientshave honored and celebrated this remarkable event,which has been happening since 2006 and continuesinto 2007. This talk explores the implications of thispowerful cosmological event for these times. The lastlunar standstills were in 1968-1969 and 1987.

SATURDAY Seminar - Recent Developmentsin the Shamanic Astrology Paradigm

The Shamanic Astrology mystery school is anorganic and evolving body of knowledge and

experience. This workshop explores the newdevelopments and insights that have emerged overthe last 10 years. His background includes academicdegrees in Comparative Philosophy and Religion,experience as a teacher of meditation in two world-wide organizations, and extensive world travel.Daniel learned astrology in the late 1960’s and waspart of Dane Rudhyar’s humanistic astrologicalmovement in the 1970’s. After a vision quest experi-ence on Mount Shasta in 1981, his astrologicalvision and spiritual path became more earth cen-tered, and a shamanically oriented astrology wasborn. For many years, his specialty has been con-necting astrology to the night sky at secludedlocations and sacred sites to directly experience “AsAbove So Below.” He has been a full-time astro-logical consultant since 1984.

Shamanic Astrology has evolved as a rich blend ofpsychological, mythological, spiritual, and shamanis-tic elements, specifically designed to assist in theunfoldment of the individual’s life purpose and innavigating this pivotal point of the Turning of theAges.

In the early 1990’s Daniel, with the help of CayelinCastell, began the Shamanic Astrology MysterySchool, a land-based, nomadic, and virtual curricu-lum for training counseling and therapeutic profes-sionals in the use of the most important astrologicaltools and techniques. By the end of 2006, 36persons had graduated as certified ShamanicAstrologers.

Daniel’s first book, The Shamanic AstrologyHandbook, was published in 1995, and a variety ofother Shamanic Astrology books are in develop-ment. He has written numerous articles for theMountain Astrologer and other publications.Throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s Daniel Giamariotraveled extensively, teaching workshops all over thecountry in over 30 locations. Getting to Know MarciaStarck

Marcia Starck has beenworking in the field of astrologyand healing for over 30 years.She began research intoMedicalAstrology in 1971,when she found that many of

her clients had symptoms that could be relieved bypreventive health care if they understood theirsymptoms. Her studies in nutrition took her to theNorthAmerican College in San Rafael, CA whereshe studied anatomy and physiology as well asadvanced nutrition, writing a paper on the variousnutritional approaches to cancer. She also studiedherbology through many retreats and seminars at theCalifornia School for Herbal Studies in Forestville,CA.

After her first book, Astrology-Key to HolisticHealth, was published in 1982, Marcia studiedflower essences, crystals and gems, and aromas. In1985 and 1986 she lived in the Sierra foothills inCalifornia, studying with herbalists and the FlowerEssence Society in Nevada City, and working withcrystals.At this time, she wrote Earth MotherAstrology (reprinted in 1997 as Healing withAstrology). She also wrote The Complete Hand-book of Natural Healing (reprinted in 1998 as TheHandbook of Natural Therapies).

In 1987 she began to perform rituals and ceremo-nies for women at different stages of their lives. Thefirst Crone Rite of Passage for women at Isis Oasisin Geyserville, CA took place in October 1987, andthe first Dark Goddess Retreat, also at Isis Oasis,was in October 1988. Currently, she conductsceremonies for equinoxes and solstices as well assummer retreats near Santa Fe, NM and in othercities in the US and the world. In 1993, she pub-lished two books, Women’s Medicine Ways-CrossCultural Rites of Passage, and The Dark God-dess-Dancing with the Shadow. These werefollowed by The Dark God-Exploring the MaleShadow, in 1995. She holds retreats for bothwomen and men in Santa Fe and other areas.

Since 1992 Ms. Starck has resided in Santa Fe,NM and gives consultations by telephone and inperson. Also known as archetypal astrology, Mythic Astrol-ogy is in large part based upon the themes of thestories told in mythology about the deities of Greeceand Rome, who gave our planets and many of theasteroids their names. When the archetypal nature ofthe planet is revealed through its character and story,we gain a richer understanding of how that themepresents itself in a person’s life, and through theirbirth chart. In this lecture and workshop, we willlook at the mythological nature of some of theplanets, asteroids, and Chiron in terms of how theywork in a chart. In Mythic Astrology, Friday’slecture, the archetypes are introduced via their

themes and astrological significance. In Saturday’sworkshop, Mythic Astrology Applied, we delveinto example charts and see how family patterns andrelationships are colored by these placements.
